Cal Football: Jason Gibson Breaks Foot, Out Three Months

The losses continue.

Gibson was listed as one of the breakout stars of spring camp and a potential linebacking rotation member, although the Bears are fortunate to be fairly deep at the position. With Gibson out, Cal will now likely have to stick with Robert Mullins, Nick Forbes, Dave Wilkerson and J.P. Hurrell as their main guys, with talented youngsters like Jalen Jefferson available and Khairi Fortt potentially lurking if he fully heals.

As talented as Gibson is, I'm guessing he's going to have to wait until 2013 to really make an impact as a linebacker. It should be noted that Gibson was not on the spring two-deep despite his strong showing. There's a lot yet that has to be figured out.

Cal has already lost Mark Brazinksi for the season and Dominic Galas for at least the first two months of the season. The Bears, who were generally injury-free last season, are starting to feel some harsh reversion to the mean.

Analysis: This sucks. Gibson looked like he could be really good. We'll just have to wait awhile.

Send Gibson well-wishes at his Twitter account.

Next practice report coming tomorrow.
