Today at 2:30, Cal baseball takes on Utah. I know very little about our new conference mates, so let's see what the Daily Cal has to say about our foes:

David Esquer has repeatedly stated that there are not any "cupcakes" in a very competitive Pac-12 conference.

While the head coach refused to acknowledge it, the Cal baseball team will welcome the closest thing to a "cupcake" to Evans Diamond this weekend when it squares off against Utah, the league’s weakest team, beginning on Friday at 2:30 p.m.

The Utes have been wholly overwhelmed in their inaugural Pac-12 season. They rank dead last in team pitching (5.29 ERA) and hitting (.243 batting average), as well as the conference standings. After winning its first league series at USC, Utah has lost four straight conference sets. The former Mountain West Conference squad has been routinely routed, losing 16-0 to UCLA, 11-2 to Arizona and 9-2 to Washington State.

OK. Utah is 10-25. Cal, which is currently in last place in the Pac-12, really needs a spark. Could facing a worse Utah team be what they need to start a streak? Although Cal is in last place, they are 20-15 on the year, so they are actually a fairly decent team. However, time is running out for Cal to make a move towards the post-season. If they have even a chance, Cal needs to make a statement against the Utes.

Today is the first game of the series. Tomorrow's game is at 1 PM, which is the same time as the end of the Spring Game. Since Evans Diamond and Edwards Field are right next to each other, it'd be a great opportunity for fans at the Spring Game to mosey on over and watch some great Pac-12 baseball. May Cal sweep. GO BEARS!
