The Bears finally earned a Pac-12 series win yesterday afternoon behind another sterling performance from Matt Flemer. Cal's senior allowed just six baserunners and one earned run over all 9 innings. No need to worry about a thin bullpen when Flemer can just go all the way. Cal's defense was again shaky, but Flemer managed to avoid big innings despite another three infield errors.
As is often the case, Tony Renda was Cal's best offensive threat, reaching base 4 times and blasting a solo home run. But it was Derek Campbell with the game's biggest hit, a two-RBI double that broke a 2-2 tie in the 7th inning.
Justin Jones will be pitching today and looking to build on perhaps his best outing of the season last Saturday against USC, when he allowed only 2 runs over 7 innings. A similar performance today might mean a critical series sweep that would officially pull Cal out of the basement of the conference standings - perhaps even as high as 6th or 7th. Go Bears!
