UPDATE: Softball takes game 1 behind a complete game effort from Valerie Arioto and 9 walks up and down the lineup!

Sadly, Cal softball was rained out yesterday, but that means a smorgasbord of diamond action today with three games to follow through the day.

Luckily the men weren't rained out, because they broke through in a big way for a huge 12-2 win over the Longhorns. Matt Flemer was at his efficient best over 8 strong innings and Cal's bats were making noise throughout. The Bears collected 17 hits, scored runs in 5 different innings, and managed 6 extra base hits, highlighted by Chadd Krist and Chadd Bunting's back-to-back blasts in the 6th inning. The Bears were brilliant in every phase of the game - including defense - and the result was a badly needed laugher.

Kyle Porter will be on the mound for what feels like a hugely pivotal game. If Cal gets the win and Porter pitches well, the Bears will feel pretty great about themselves on the flight back to Berkeley. If Porter struggles and Cal drops another series yesterday's win might just be a blip between the gloom and doom.

Meanwhile, the softball Bears will get started before baseball gets rolling, and they might finish up after the men are done in Texas. I'm sure we'll see both Valerie Arioto and Jolene Henderson on the mound, and the Bears will have a chance to really put some distance between themselves and their strongest challengers in the Pac-12. Go Bears!
