The opening day of the Pac-12 tournament saw a slew of upsets as the 12, 11, 10 and 8 seeds advanced. The presumed result of that upheaval would be an easier path for teams with a first round bye. The Bears will test that theory by trying for their 3rd win of the season over Colorado, who struggled mightily down the stretch (at one point losing 8 of 9) before recovering in time to upset Oregon St. in their regular season finale and Utah last night.
Colorado won last night mostly because they held Utah to 13-51 (25.5%) shooting with 15 turnovers. The Utes are clearly struggling without their injured starting point guard Janita Badon, so I wouldn't read too much into Colorado's 14 point win. Cal's goal will be to reproduce the type of play that led to a dominating home win over the Buffs less than two weeks ago in Berkeley. Cal dominated on defense and forced 17 turnovers. Play that same aggressive, disciplined defense and the Bears should advance to the semi-finals with ease.
If the Bears do win, you'll have to keep watching youtube to find out their Friday afternoon opponent. USC and Washington St. tip off at approximately 7:15 tonight.
