Steve Williams named PAC-12 Defensive Player of the Week

It was Steve Williams' island Saturday night. The junior cornerback totaled four pass break ups and an interception against the Wazzu air raid attack, earning him Defensive Player of the Week honors.


Yes, this game was against a 2-4 team. Yes, this game was against a team we have historically dominated. Regardless, no one came into this game not worried about what could go wrong. Mike Leach's air raid offense, coupled with stat-monster Marquise Wilson is a scary combination.

However, the secondary, led by cornerback Steve Williams, perhaps stepped up more so than any other position group Saturday night. Not only did Williams play well on Wilson when he was in the game (snagging an interception from him in the first half), but he continued to dominate throughout the night with several extremely well-timed pass break ups, earning him PAC-12 defensive player of the week honors.

If the secondary continues playing this well (Kam Jackson won the award last week), we should be able to effectively stack the box against the Stanford running attack and dare Josh Nunes to make some big throws. Although we still might have to find someone to guard the tight ends...
