Congrats to Cal women's volleyball, who with #1 Penn State's loss to Oregon and #2 USC's loss to Penn State later that weekend, are now the number-one ranked team in the country for the first time in program history! Cal finished No. 1 in the new AVCA Division 1 Coaches Poll with 31 first place votes and 1,422 total points after sweeping their weekend matches in the Molten Classic, and nurse a slim lead over the Nittany Lions.
It'll be interesting to see how long the Bears stay in the top spot. They play three games in Virginia this weekend (with one game against the Cavaliers), and also have games against Georgetown and Nevada later in the non-conference slate, but their most challenging games aren't until Pac-12 play spikes off. Still, it's another remarkable accomplishment for Rich Feller's program, which just seems to push forward to try and set the standard in the new era of conference play.
GO BEARS!
