Is revenge better served early in the morning?  The Cal rugby team hopes to find that out this morning, as the Golden Bear ruggers take on the Utah Utes in the championship quarterfinals of the Rugby 7s Invitational in Philadelphia.  Utah defeated Cal 31-26 in last year's Rugby 7s championship final (which, contrary to what you might hear from NBC's broadcast team, did NOT make Utah last year's collegiate rugby "national champions").

calbears.com has a concise rundown of how Cal got to today's quarterfinals:

California swept its three-match slate Saturday in NBC's 7s invitational at PPL Park to win Pool A and advance to Sunday's championship round.

The Golden Bears, who yielded only one try en route to outscoring Ohio State [38-0], LSU [24-0] and Penn State [26-7] by a combined total of 88-7, will face Utah in the championship quarterfinals Sunday at 10:19 a.m. ET.

If the Rugby Bears defeat the Utes in their Sunday quarterfinal, Cal will play the winner of Army vs. Texas in a semifinal with television coverage on VERSUS beginning on the West Coast at 11:05 a.m. PT. The final is slated for a 2:20 p.m. PT start live on NBC.

Here are your championship quarterfinals matchups (all times Pacific):

7:19 a.m. California vs. Utah

7:41 a.m. Penn State vs. Dartmouth

8:03 a.m. Army vs. Texas

8:25 a.m. Central Washington vs. Arizona

Let this be your open thread.  Hopefully, it is a three-win open thread on the way to a 7s championship.
