The Bears took game one, as Franni Etchavarria provided the offense with a solo home run and Jolene Henderson did the rest, blanking Kentucky over seven one-hit innings in another dominating performance. She will be back on the mound this morning to try to clinch a softball world series spot in game 2.
Should the Bears fail to seal the deal in game 2, they'll be back on the field in Lexington soon after at 1:00, this time on ESPN. Iron-woman Henderson would surely be pitching again with Cal's season on the line, but Cal would love to avoid forcing her to do so. It will be up to Cal's lineup to provide enough support for Henderson to close things out quickly.
UPDATE: CAL lost Game #2 8-0. It was a rough start for star pitcher Jolene Henderson. She hit the lead-off batter, then gave up a double, triple, and another base hit to spot KU a 3-0 lead in the 1st.
But the Bears won Game #3 9-0. Jolene Henderson bounced back in a big way. There was fire in her eyes and her fellow Bears came out swinging with a 5-run 1st inning. Jolene was back to her dominating self and shut down the Wildcats while the Bears piled it on with four more runs, including a home run from clean-up hitter Lindsey Ziegenhirt. Congratulations to Cal Softball! They're headed to OKC for their 1st College World Series since 2005. Gametime is 10am PST on Thursday against the Alabama Crimson Tide. TV Coverage is ESPNU. Let's finish this!
Go Bears!
