Cal's offense was still largely absent, but Erik Johnson was simply brilliant, allowing Cal to earn a 2-1 victory on Friday against Oregon. Johnson allowed a leadoff walk in to start the game that eventually scored on a sac fly. He was dominant the rest of the way, striking out eleven Ducks in his eight innings of work. But it would earn him just a no decision, because Cal's only offense for the first eight innings was a Mitch Delfino home run in the second. Oregon's Tyler Anderson matched Johnson inning after inning, and only when Anderson finally left the game was Cal able to mount the winning rally.
It took an unlikely hero to win the game. Michael Theofanopoulos has only 10 plate appearances this year, but he has certainly made the most of them. He doubled with one out and Mitch Delfino on second base to drive in the walk-off run. The hit raised the freshman's average to .444.
Today it's Justin Jones (5-3, 3.36) vs. Madison Boer (2-3, 2.12) as Cal tried to clinch a series win early. Go Bears!
