Fresh off a road sweep of the Washington Huskies, the Bears will try to carry that momentum into this afternoon’s midweek match-up with UC Davis. Today’s game will carry a somber tone as the UC Davis baseball team is dealing with the unexpected loss of recent graduate Scott Heinig. The Aggies cancelled their Sunday game after hearing the news, and this will be their first game since learning of Heinig’s passing.
UC Davis has struggled on the diamond this year, and they enter today’s contest with a record of 8-21. I would guess that Dayne Quist (1-4, 5.44) will start today’s game, although I have been unable to find an official announcement. He’s one of UC Davis’s three frequent starters and was likely set to start in Sunday’s cancelled game. Cal has not made an announcement either, but I would guess that Kevin Miller (4-2, 1.30) will make the start despite pitching an inning and a third against Washington on Sunday.
The Pac-10 currently has four ranked teams other than Cal and the Bears have only faced one of those teams, so the schedule will soon stiffen. Cal would love to get this win before welcoming in ninth ranked national power Arizona St. for a three game weekend series. Go Bears!
