Brennan Scarlett, Central Catholic Defensive End, Commits To Cal

Just minutes ago at Central Catholic in Portland Oregon, Brennan Scarlett chose Cal over Notre Dame, Furd, UCLA, USC and Oregon, reports Brandon Huffman of Scout. Tosh Lupoi now has another important defensive line recruit, although Ron Gould was Scarlett's main recruiter.

A US Army All-American (who didn't play due to injury), Scarlett is currently a strongside defensive end in Portland; it'll be interesting to see whether he stays at that position (Jim McGill of Bear Insider seems to confirm that he will stay on the D-line) or moves back to linebacker (Ryan Gorcey of Bear Territory says he could play a bit of outside linebacker too), or whether he'll stay on the strong side and compete with DeAndre Coleman and current Cal verbal Mustafa Jalil. Weighing in at 6'5", 255 lb, Scarlett doesn't have quite the girth to make other guys move yet, but he has the right frame to grow into to really make opposing tackles feel his presence down the road.

He also has a 3.9 GPA, so he should fit right into the competitive academic environment Cal offers.

Rivals rankings (4 stars): 101st best prospect, 9th overall SDE, 2nd best player in Oregon
ESPN rankings (4 stars): grade of 80,  17th best defensive end
Scout rankings (4 stars): 19th best defensive end

Welcome to Cal, Brennan. GO BEARS!

After the jump, some video of Scarlett (here are the only highlights I could find via ESPN).
