Williams, who had been playing at North Dakota State, looks as if he will be a Golden Bear this fall. Jim McGill of Bear Insider breaks the news.
The big 6-7/295 soph center from Liverpool, England will be an early enrollee in January and will sign next Tuesday with the Bears. He will have three years to play two.
"I committed to Cal last night," said Williams. "I spoke to (former Cal offensive line) coach Marshall and coach Tedford Thursday morning and got a better feel for what Cal had to offer. I talked again later that after with coach Tedford and he let me know about coach Marshall moving on. I just trust coach Tedford and what he says and decided I really wanted to be at Cal. I look forward to working with him."
Rivals ranked him as a three-star offensive lineman, and is 44th among all junior college recruits; he's also a three-star ranking in Scout. He was originally a rugby player in England before he started playing football in prep school. Williams also received offers from schools like UCLA, Illinois, Michigan State, Arizona, Florida State, Iowa State, Kansas and Kansas State.
Williams plays left tackle at North Dakota State, and uses his size to keep people in front of him. He still needs some work on his run blocking and getting to the second level as he works on getting more flexible to play in a multiple offense like the Golden Bears. He's likely to play tackle at Cal, and will compete for a starting spot as early as next year, especially with Cal struggling to find good tackle play the past few years.
Welcome to Cal Matt! GO BEARS!
