Cal Volleyball Update: #7 Golden Bears Beat #12 Bruins

The Bears remain undefeated at 15-0, winning 25-18, 18-25, 25-15, and 25-22. Cal ended up with 20 blocks, an incredible number over four sets to stifle the hard-hitting Bruins. Tarrah Murrey led the way with 20 kills, Kat Brown leading the defense with 7 kills and 10 blocks (the most blocks by a Golden Bear since Ellen Orchard had 11 at UCLA in 2007) and Carli Lloyd notched up 36 assists, moving her into ninth all time in Pac-10 volleyball history. 2 aces and 1 error for Cal, 9 aces and 10 errors for UCLA.

Off to the best start since 2003 and among the nation's elite as one of two remaining undefeated teams, the Golden Bears test their mettle in back-to-back road matches against perennial national powers, UCLA and USC, with a chance to tie the longest winning streak in school history. Only Cal's 2003 squad had a longer streak and a better start (16-0) and only cross-Bay rival Stanford is still undefeated this season. The Bears received the No. 7 ranking in the latest AVCA poll this week; their highest rating since opening 2009 at No. 6. Cal continues to exhibit tremendous efficiency and ranks second in the nation in hitting percentage (.334), led by sophomore middle hitter Shannon Hawari, who attacks at a .472 rate. Pac-10 Player of the Week junior Tarah Murrey is one of just two outside hitters in the conference ranked in the top 10 for hitting percentage. Senior setter Carli Lloyd needs 15 assists to take sole possession of ninth place all-time in the Pac-10 for career assists. She currently has 4,826. The Bears are looking for revenge after falling to both the Trojans and the Bruins in road matches almost exactly one year ago.
