John Elway, a player more talented individually than anyone on Cal's sideline, a son of a coach and a football aristocrat of the laciest of sleeves, loses this game to a literal mob scene of drunken Cal sans culottes stampeding his carriage with a herd of mules. Cal only has ten men on the field at the start, and has four of them lined up in an illegal spot. The band is on the field, though later the Athletic Director would say that it was 'typical of them to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.' This is the most perfect description of the Stanford band ever. ... There is no making sense of how any of this happened, and never will be, and that makes The Play the most average moment in college football.
