Cal Finishes 5th In Pac-12 Football Recruiting

"Still, Cal should have the best West Coast quarterback from this class in Zach Kline, brings in a great haul at wide receiver headlined by Bryce Treggs, Kenny Lawler and Darius Powe, and has an underrated gem in Freddie Tagaloa to be their tackle of the future. It's not likely to be a class Cal fans will complain that much about, particularly if Kline proves to be as good as advertised." Check out the link for more data.

Cal Football: Update On The Will Lyles Situation [Jon Wilner]

This is the most comprehensive report so far, and should hopefully assuage all your fears about the Lyles situation. (HT chowder) "Monday, the school made available a prospect list provided by Lyles entitled "2010 Texas recruits." All of the 49 prospects were found to be members of the class of 2010 – the list includes Oregon signee Lache Seastrunk, whose relationship with Lyles is part of the NCAA probe — and all but one is from Texas. The exception, Trovon Reed, is a receiver from Thibodaux, La., whose recruitment by Auburn is reportedly under examination by the NCAA. The prospect list includes contact information such as street address, email address and home and cell numbers, all of which has been redacted by Cal, which cited federal privacy laws. The list was sent from Lyles’ personal email account, as an attachment, to assistant coach Kenwick Thompson on Feb. 11, 2009 at 10:34 a.m., according to a document provided by Cal. (Thompson is from Houston and recruits the state of Texas.) The date is five days after the National Signing Day for the class of 2009 and coincides with the start of the recruiting cycle for the class of 2010. ... Tuesday, Cal provided the Mercury News with a 75-minute DVD compilation of video material sent by Lyles. Starting in Feb. ’09 and ending nearly a year later, he provided Cal with more than 30 videos of prospects in the class of 2010, a school official said."

Cal Paid Much Less For Willie Lyles Scouting Package Than Oregon [The Oregonian]

Ken Goe reports. Here's the important quotes relevant to us. "Willie Lyles, the Houston-based talent scout whose relationship with Oregon is the subject of a NCAA investigation, also sold scouting packages to California and Louisiana State. And, according to an invoice released to The Oregonian in response to a public records request, Cal paid much less for a similar package. Lyles billed California $5,000 for what is described on the invoice as the Complete Scouting Services' "2010 National Package." On the invoice, it appears nearly identical to the CSS "2011 National Package" for which Oregon paid Lyles $25,000. ... Interestingly, the 2010 package that Cal was bought is listed as having been shipped on March, 23, 2010. The 2011 package that Oregon bought is listed as having been shipped on Feb. 22, 2010." As we discussed yesterday, no investigation into Cal has occurred as of yet. While it may look bad, the money is the issue, and the $5k payment is standard for recruiting services (Lyles himself has indicated that all Cal wanted was Texas recruiting film, according to the old Yahoo Sports report). Plus Cal's compliance department seems cooperative, so that's always a good sign.

Todd Barr Has Cal Listed In His Top Seven

One of the best defensive tackles available in the 2011 class still has the Golden Bears on his radar.

Tosh Lupoi named Rivals Recruiter of the Year

"While recruiting is a team effort and the whole staff played vital roles in our recruiting success, Tosh is worthy of being recognized as doing an exceptional job," Bears coach Jeff Tedford said. "His dedication to develop strong relationships and communicate the great opportunities that Cal provides makes him a very strong recruiter." Lupoi was involved in signing many of Cal’s top recruits, including Chris Martin, Keenan Allen, Nick Forbes, Gabe King, Cecil Whiteside and Chris McCain. Go Tosh! (HT chowder)

Another Golden Commit: Jacob Wark, TE from Jesuit in Portland, Oregon

"Wark considers himself a dual-threat tight end who loves to mix it up blocking but possesses strong receiver skills as well. The 3 star 6-4/240 tight end came into his own as a strong prospect in 2009, hauling in 34 passes for 434 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season."
