With most of the position coach hires set after Cal hired Zach Yanser to led their offensive line, let's take a look at some of the other hires that Cal has made over the past week or so along with the additional responsibilities some of our new staff will be taking on outside of their current stated position.
Andy Buh will be serving as the main linebackers coach along with his defensive coordinator responsibilities. Buh coached linebackers at Wisconsin last year and had defensive coordinator/linebacker responsibilities in his two seasons at Nevada. Buh has also coached linebackers at Stanford and San Diego State.
With Sonny Dykes hiring the majority of his assistants on offense and defense, only one position remains to be filled on the Cal coaching staff. It will almost certainly be a defensive hire somewhere along the line. It remains to be seen what position Buh will decide to make defensively; with Barry Sacks set at defensive line and Randy Stewart coaching the secondary, it's likely to be a position regarding linebackers or secondary but there could be additional responsibilities at other positions. It remains to be seen.
In case it wasn't clear already, offensive coordinator Tony Franklin will also be serving as the quarterbacks coach.
Director of football operations Mike McHugh was let go along with Jeff Tedford. Director of player personnel Andrew McGraw will take on some of McHugh's responsibilities. Rajeeb Hossain is also expected to join the Cal operations staff in some capacity and be part of the new team with McGraw; he was Louisiana Tech's director of football operations in 2012.
Recruiting coordinator Kevin Parker (known to many of you as rope coach) is staying. Parker is one of the most important liaisons between coaches and players and has greatly helped assist bridging the gaps. It'll be good to see him twirling rope on the sidelines in 2013, as he's more valuable to the running of the Cal football team than you realize.
Strength and conditioning coach Mike Blasquez remains on staff, but he will probably be evaluated over the next few weeks when players return to school. It's quite possible Dykes could decide to move in a different direction with his strength coach if he sees things he doesn't like.
Southern Miss named former Cal quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Marcus Arroyo as their offensive coordinator, joining Todd Monken's new coaching staff..
Clancy Pendergast is receiving interest not just from USC for defensive coordinator, but he's also mentioned as a candidate for the St. Louis Rams.
Two former Cal assistants from Tedford's staff will be joining Ron Gould at UC Davis: Offensive assistant Ben Steele will be the tight ends/recruiting coordinator, while offensive graduate assistant Matt Wiegand will be coming on to coach the offensive line.
Replacing them will be two more offensive assistants from Louisiana Tech. Hunter McWilliams and Jacob Peeler will both be coming along as graduate assistants at Cal. McWilliams was a graduate assistant in 2012 but also ran operations for the football team in the two previous seasons. He was a deep snapper at Texas from 1999-2000 and lettered as a walk-on, earning a degree in government. Peeler has spent three seasons as an intern in strength and conditioning and spent time coaching offensive lines at Kansas community colleges.
