Gold Out vs. Michigan State
This page will serve as a compendium of information about the 'Gold Out Memorial Stadium' effort. It truly has been a grass-roots effort, from the original BearInsider thread to various blog postings, edits on Wikipedia and the obligatory Facebook group. The editors of the California Golden Blogs have basically done no work in promoting this idea, but I think it's time we formally endorsed and promoted this movement. Thus, this permanent page, linked to from a prominent spot on our front page.
From the original BearInsider thread:
LET'S GOLD OUT MEMORIAL STADIUM, PASS IT ON.
The first game of the year on ABC HD 5:00pm. Gold uniforms and everyone in the stadium wearing gold color t-shirts / sweatshirts. That would look so cool for our school. Who's with me lets start this now and lets see if it gets any steam. I know the cal student section has blue t-shirts but the rest of the stadium would make ABC and ESPN want to come to Cal more often.
The original FanPost by Danzig included photoshopped renderings by gobears15 and royrules22:
A complete summary of the movement can be found in this FanPost by RollOnYouBears667, including these helpful ideas:
Here are some things that us Cal fans can do to actually get the ball rolling for this project:
-Go to Cal stores and ask them to put signs in their windows and mention the Gold Out to customers.
- Have some kind of large banner behind a TV camera at the Oak Grove saying "Gold Out Vs. Michigan State 8-30-08".
-Bombard the AD with emails encouraging them to get a sponsor to hand out free gold shirts.
-A facebook group called "Lets Gold Out Memorial Stadium" has almost 1,400 members (including Nyan Boateng, Tracy Slocum, a few other Golden Bears).
Also worth noting: a Rivals.com article on the subject, which, among other things, notes there there is support for this idea amongst both the athletic department and members of the current team:
The Cal athletic administration has gotten hold of the idea as well. And although the marketing department couldn't be reached for comment for this article, a spokesman for the athletic department did tell BearTerritory that steps are being taken to see if a full-fledged "one color" crowd for season opener would be a realistically plausible idea. The biggest obstacle, according to the spokesman, was getting the advertising worked out.
"Wow. That would be my first reaction," said Bernard Hicks, who will be moving back to free safety this year. "It'll be a great sight. It'll motivate the fans to get really into the game. Hopefully the TV crew can get a shot from up top so fans could see how it looks too. I saw a photoshop picture of what it would look like and I have to say it was legit."
As we move closer to August 30th, I'm sure more concrete information about the state of this movement will come out. When it does, rest assured that it will be posted here.
