Gus Johnson Leaving CBS Sports, March Madness; On His Way To The Pac-12? [SBN Bay Area]

Please make this happen please make this happen please make this happen ... "Industry sources said Johnson has spoken with Fox Sports about a role in its college football coverage. Fox Sports (which has a 49 percent ownership share in the Big Ten Network) recently upped its inventory of college football as part of the 12-year, $3 billion contract between the Pac-10 (soon to be the Pac-12) and ESPN and Fox."

Larry Scott interview with Ted Miller

This is a good interview that Ted Miller conducts with Larry Scott. Not a whole lot of new information in the verbals. But as a doctoral candidate in psychology I find his reactions fascinating. If I read into his nonverbals correctly there are four interesting points to take away: 1) The $250M/yr might be a reach and has certainly not been settled...we may need to lower expectations there. 2) It's clear he is sensitive about the Pac-12 expansion and I suspect he may harbor doubts as well (despite the rhetoric) 3) He is very excited about the Asian expansion and genuinely believes the opportunity there is vast. This is a great sign. 4) He is similarly honestly enthused about the academic side of the PXII network and I think he believes that it will be a major factor in getting academic depts on the "side of" athletics. Also a really great sign. Larry Scott talks a great game but he needs to work on his poker face. It doesn't take a Paul Ekman (guy "Lie to Me" is roughly based on) to tell when there is some ambivalence in his message.

Pac-10 Secures Rich Deals With Fox and ESPN

The Pacific-10 Conference will start its own network on cable television in 2012 but will also sell most of its marquee football and basketball games to Fox and ESPN for about $3 billion over 12 years, more than quadrupling what the two companies have been paying. It is the richest conference deal ever. The Pac-10, which is expected to announce the agreements Wednesday, is following the media model of the Big Ten Conference, which in 2007 created its own network and negotiated a 10-year, $1 billion deal with ESPN. But a critical difference between the conferences’ deals is that the Pac-10 will retain full ownership of its network.

"Shane just sounded so happy. He was on his way to the airport and called and he was ecstatic. How great is that for a kid to call and say thank you for everything you’ve done. That says a lot about Shane."
