DBD 5.25.12 #YOLO

It has come to my attention that some of the old people (read, 30 or above; or anyone who's married) here are a little confused by this phrase. Young people everywhere are saying it. It's exploding all over Twitter. But what does it mean?

Let's get the definition out of the way. It stands for You Only Live Once. It's been around for a while, but was recently popularized by hip hop artist Drake, whose track, The Motto (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V2VVEH6AX4) is all about this.

But what does it mean?

In many ways, it's similar to a much older phrase - "Carpe Diem" (Seize the Day). Basically, make the most of your life. A lot of us had this philosophy back in college, which is why we'd be partying on a Tuesday, instead of studying for Thursday's midterm.

In practice, a lot of people use it to justify doing stupid things (drinking to the point of losing control, for instance). But don't think of them when you hear it. Think about the times when you got up, said "forget my responsibilities" and went out and did something fun and memorable.

So let's hear your stories!

DBD 5.24.12 Philip Philips is a person who exists?

Apparently, the finale of American Idol was last night and a dude named Philip Philips won:

The lights were dimmed, the votes were counted, and Phillip Phillips became the new "American Idol."

As expected, Phillips beat out Jessica Sanchez on Wednesday's (May 23) Season 11 "Idol" finale, live at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre. Phillips topped Sanchez after a reported 132 million votes were cast — "a new world record," according to host Ryan Seacrest.

Phillips teared up while performing his winning song "Home," while confetti rained down on the stage around him. The Leesburg, Georgia, native has been a cool cucumber all season long, but he broke down in the moment, just as he did during his hometown visit last week.

Phillips didn't finish the song, but strolled off stage and into the arms of his family, who were waiting in the first few rows. As streamers fell and the band played on the stage behind him, Phillips hugged his family members, and later judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.

I do not know how I missed this. I guess I am really out of the loop, but the dude's name is Philip Philips and I'm JUST finding out about it.

I blame you all!

DBD 5.23.12 Meeting yourself

One night, as you stumble home late from the bar, you take a turn down an unfamiliar street. A strange feeling comes over you. And suddenly you see a familiar sight... but something is a little off. It's you. But a little different.

You are now face-to-face with yourself, but ten years from now.

You can ask future you five questions. What do you ask?

100 Days and counting... Sneak peek inside Memorial

Imgp0881_medium

So on May 18th, my son and I had an opportunity to tour the New-old Memorial Stadium to see the progress and some of the cool new features within. We showed up at 4:00 PM, since there is a skeleton crew only from 4:30 - 6:00PM, and a brief window to tour an active 24-hour construction site. After the jump, many, many more photos.

Rugby 7s in Philly!!!

Just a heads up for the East Coast alumni, that the Men's Rugby team will be at the Rugby 7s tourney on June 2nd and 3rd. I am working on coordinating the Philly alumni to go to the tourney. If you are planning on going, feel free to give me a heads up and we can alert you to the specific section we will be sitting in. We are planning to buy GA tickets and grab a section to root on our Cal Golden Bears!

Go Bears!

Cal vs Ohio State-getting tickets

Hi folks,

I am hoping to organize a small caravan of Cal alums from Philly to head to the game in Columbus. I was hoping that the CAA would be able to come through with a block of tickets, but I am not wildly optimistic that they will be able to come through. I started to look through stubhub and can find some tickets....but I am also hoping to find a better way to go.

Anyone have suggestions on how to get tickets?

DBD 5.22.12 I've made a huge mistake

So today's DBD is all about regret.

Think about a time in your recent past. Or distant past. But some sort of major regret.

Is it the regret of inaction? Not asking that girl out when you had the chance, only to find out later that she had a huge crush on you? Or perhaps that job opportunity you turned down? Not studying abroad during your time at Cal?

Is is the regret of action? You did what you thought was the best thing... only things didn't quite work out so well. Maybe you gave up something you had or risked too much?

I need to hear stories!

One that comes to mind, as I ready myself to move on to the next stage of my life, was at my previous job. I had an opportunity to spend a couple months working at a trading desk in New York. Hell, the firm would pay for a downtown apartment and everything too. But then the financial crisis hit... hard. And I never got to do this. And now I don't know when I'll ever get to work at a trading desk in my life (mainly because that's not the field I'm focused on).

DBD 5.21.12 Jimmy Rustling DBD

per federer express's request this is the jimmy rustling DBD as promised...

What is jimmy rustlin?

"That Really Rustled My Jimmies" is an expression that is used to convey feelings of discontent or discomfort.

First known example:

The absurdity of the phrase "Rustled Jimmies" instantly led to a variety of responses to the OP, most notably an image of a frowning gorilla with the overlaid text "that really rustled my jimmies" in the popular Impact font.

Both the thread and the image of the gorilla went relatively unnoticed until later on when another user posted an image taken from the front of a box of Gorilla Munch cereal.

Here is a scanned box of Gorilla Munch cereal:

If a jimmy rustling pic is unavailable to post, you may switch to manual mode in the follow manner:

Insert Jimmy Rustlin box:

Jimmies status:

[ ] RUSTLED

[ ] UNRUSTLED

Choose which box applies to you, then mark manually like so:

Jimmies Status:

[ ] RUSTLED

[X] UNRUSTLED

Now that we have that all cleared up, I want to know...

What really RUSTLES YOUR JIMMIES?

How can we tell if your jimmies are rustled?

What are some notable experiences you have had when someone tried to rustle your jimmies and failed.

How do you remain UNRUSTLED in jimmy rustling situations?

Cal rugby?

I have been out of the loop for awhile and have not been able to track down any info on why Cal didn't participate in the college championships. Was it getting too tedious winning a national championship every year, can any of you fill me in?

I've enjoyed lurking here from time to time. Hope to see you this fall. I'm sure my Utes will put up a better fight this year.

Cal Softball Playoff Video: First Cal vs. Arkansas Game - Reid Steals Home

Saturday afternoon's 3-2 loss to Arkansas was not a lot of fun for Cal fans. But there was one unquestionably great highlight for the Bears. In the fourth inning, singles by Jamia Reid and Britt Vonk put Bears at first and second. Arkansas then elected to intentionally walk Valerie Arioto to load the bases. The speedy Jamia Reid trotted over to third but then, taking advantage of Razorback inattention, she rounded the bag and stole home.

It was a great moment in an otherwise frustrating game. But since the Bears need to beat this same Arkansas team twice on Sunday to advance to the Super Regionals, check out some video to give you an idea of what the Razorback-Bear match-up looks like.
