Strong First Half Carries Bears Over Gauchos
BERKELEY - Another sunny day in Berkeley brought more solid play from the No. 2-ranked Cal men's water polo team as the Bears took advantage of a strong first half to beat No. 7 UC Santa Barbara 13-9 at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
With a pro-Cal crowd enjoying another picture-perfect day in Berkeley, Cal (12-1) got rolling right away against the Gauchos. Johnny Hooper got the Bears on the board, bouncing a penalty shot past the UCSB goalkeeper after Thomas Carroll drew the foul with good activity in close. UCSB got two chances on the power play, but after the Bears killed both Gaucho opportunities, Odysseas Masmanidis made it 2-0 Bears with a goal from two meters.

Cal Freshmen Compete in Aggie Invitational
DAVIS, Calif. - California freshmen Bjorn Hoffman and Dominic Barretto will battle for Singles A and B titles, respectively, Sunday at the Aggie Invitational after each won twice Saturday at UC Davis.
"Having two of our freshmen in the finals of the UC Davis Aggie Invitational is a great feeling," Cal head coach Peter Wright said. "Bjorn has been using his serve and powerful forehand well to dominate his opponents, and Nick has been using his athletic style to counterpunch and outhustle his opponents. We're getting a good look at how these guys are going to contribute in the spring season."

Popovic, Starr Advance to Nike Fall Invitational Semis
BERKELEY - California teammates Denise Starr and Karla Popovic won in the top-flight quarterfinals Saturday at the Cal Nike Fall Invitational to reach Sunday's semifinals at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
In the Blue Singles flight, Popovic, a junior ranked 90th and seeded fourth in this tournament, was dominant in beating fifth-seeded Jana McCord of Saint Mary's, 6-1, 6-0, on court one at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The No. 1 seed in the singles top flight, the 62nd-ranked Starr later defeated Fresno State's Katerina Stloukalova, 7-5, 6-4, on court two.
