Inside the Lair: Cal Rower Makes History at NCAA Convention
By Jonathan Okanes, Cal Athletic Communications
BERKELEY - From the moment junior rower Taylor James stepped foot on Cal's campus, she wanted to make a difference as a Cal student-athlete.
Little did she know the scope of the impact she could make.
James made history last month as one of 15 student-athletes across the country to have a voice at the NCAA Convention. The NCAA voted last summer to restructure Division I governance such that student-athletes have an active, decision-making voice as part of the new autonomy structure. Each of the five power conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC) were granted three student-athletes for last month's NCAA Convention in Washington, D.C. James, the president of Cal's Golden Bear Advisory Committee, received the honor along with UCLA football player Kene Orjioke and Washington gymnast McKenzie Fechter in a vote by her peers on the Pac-12 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Women's Gymnastics
For the first time in conference history, a gymnast has claimed both Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors, as Cal's Toni-Ann Williams was voted the winner of both for her stellar meet against Oregon State.
Men's Tennis
Another consolation match against a team of Lions came down to the wire for 13th-ranked California at the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship, and the Golden Bears prevailed on Sunday night to defeat No. 22 Penn State, 4-2.
Women's Basketball
Reshanda Gray posted her eighth double-double of the season with 32 points and 10 rebounds on Senior Night, but USC used a strong second half to end California's eight-game winning streak with a 65-54 win at Haas Pavilion.
Men's Basketball
Tyrone Wallace and Jabari Bird combined for 47 points, but it wasn't enough as No. 11/10 Utah out-lasted California, 76-61, to snap the Golden Bears' five-game winning streak Sunday evening in front of 14,159 fans at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
