Weekend Schedule
Missing Cal Football on a bye week? There will be 4 Futbol matches in Berkeley this weekend, including two involving ranked teams (3 of the 4 matches will also be shown on the Pac-12 Networks).
The undefeated Cal Women's Soccer face a tough weekend in hosting the higher ranked Texas Tech squad and then a rematch with Santa Clara (who the Bears beat 2-1 in OT for the 2nd win of the year after being eliminated by the Broncos in the 2013 NCAA Tournament).

Cal Men's Water Polo (4-0, 4-0 at the Triton Invite outscoring opponents 69-27)
No.4 California Golden Bears kicked off the 2014 season with a dominant showing at the Triton Invite down at San Diego. Does the Bears not-at-all-unexpected performance proofs of the team ready to compete for the NCAA title again and ends the USC tyranny or just a further evidence of the large gap between the top 5 programs (Cal, USC, Furd, UCLA, and possibly Pacific after their rise to prominence last year) and the rest of the field? The truth probably lies somewhere in between.

UCSB is ranked 7th in the country and that was by far the closest result of the weekend.
Cal Women's Soccer (6-0, 2-0 on the week)
Check out the Cal Women's Soccer team showcasing both our beautiful campus and their soccer skills.
As I updated in the Sunday gamethread, Golden Bears reached a perfect 6-0 record (and a No.10 ranking in the country) by getting two late goals against Cal Poly. The game winning score was scored by redshirt freshman Kelly Fitzgerald (4th on the year) with a great feed from senior Taylor Comeau.
Comeau, who played with the Seattle Sounders W-League squad over the summer, has really improved since last season. She is the Bears' current point leader with 4 goals and 3 assists. Overall, the Bears have had 10 different goal scorers already. Even though the arguable best Golden Bear heading into this season in Ifeoma Onumonu is lost for the season to an injury, maybe the Bears can sustain this offense comes the tough Pac-12 season which includes fellow top 10 teams in Furd and UCLA.
Congrats to Taylor Comeau, the @CalAthletics @MuscleMilkSF student-athlete of the week! http://t.co/MGzOG9Qp0Y

Prior to the Cal Poly win, the Bears made Moraga a Bear Territory by beating St. Mary 4-0, earning a 3rd consecutive shutout victory.
Cal Volleyball (5-1, 2-1 at the New Mexico State Tournament)
Coming off a perfect 3-0 tournament that saw some shaky moments at Air Force, the Bears ventured to Las Cruces, NM to play in the tournament hosted by New Mexico State. In a 5 set fight, the Bears suffered their 1st lost of the season when they got beat by Radford (the defending Big South champs) 25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-12. Bouncing back from that the Bears took care of North Dakota State in straight sets 25-16, 25-18, 25-18. Concluding the weekend was another 5 set win for the Bears, when they beat the host New Mexico State in another 5 setter 25-16, 22-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-12.
Former Cal Volleyball star Adrienne Gehan (a Texas native) stopped by to cheer on the Bears.

Middleblocker Lillian Schonewise lead the team with 17 kills. The freshmen duo of Ashten Smith-Gooden and Christine Alftin both reached double digits in kills as well with 13 and 11, respectively. Senior opposite Christina Higgins added 13 kills of her own as sophomore setter Alyssa Jensen registered 53 assists.
This weekend home series are the first ones with free videos on the year, I will try to tune in for a bit to see how the team performs. From following the matches via the free audio call, it sounds like the Bears are still rather inconsistent at times. On the flip side, the experiences of winning some tight matches (even when they shouldn't have been) may pay dividend later in the always super tough Pac-12 play.
Libero Maddy Kerr is optimistic about the Bears' chances in her weekly blog (Kerr's Korner)
On Friday, we lost in five sets to Radford. We did not play well, and they exposed all of our weaknesses, and showed us each individually and as a team a lot of things we need to work on. Although we hate losing, I think we have to use that loss as a learning experience, and we have been. That afternoon, we rebounded to beat North Dakota State in three straight sets, and the next day, beat New Mexico State in five sets.
We have very high expectations for this team, and really need to step up our game, especially since we are in the Pac-12, arguably the best women’s volleyball conference in the country. We are getting better by the day, but are nowhere near reaching our full potential yet, which is not necessarily a bad thing, as we want to continue to improve as the season goes on. We are still developing our own unique style of play. We just have to keep working and be patient!
Cal Field Hockey (2-2, 1-1 on the weekend from Bloomington, IN)
Playing both matches in Bloomington, the Golden Bears were beaten 4-1 by host Indiana first. Bouncing back from that loss, the Bears shutout the Ohio Bobcats 3-0, at the neutral site of Bloomington, to earn a split on the weekend. Lara Kruggel scored two goals and the Bears played both redshirt senior Courtney Hendrickson and redshirt freshman Kori Griswold at goals.
Here is what coach Onstead has to say about her goalies (from CalBears.com):
ON FRESHMAN KORI GRISWOLD’S FIRST CAREER APPEARANCE
“We decided before the games last weekend to get Kori some minutes. We have to get her ready and want her to know how confident everyone is in her play. Both games she got in. It’s nice to get her feet wet. The only way to do that is to not be concerned about the score (when we put her in). We had her already warming up on the sideline against Indiana, and the clock stops after a goal goes in, so it was easy to make a substitution at that time. It was already preplanned for Kori to go in, but unfortunately the opportunity to make the substitution came after a goal, which didn’t affect our management one way or another.”Redshirt senior goalkeeper Courtney Hendrickson has been one of the top goalkeepers in the country and is now in her second season as the starter. Heading into this weekend, Hendrickson ranks fourth on the NCAA active career leaders list with a .767 save percentage in her career. The only other goalkeeper on roster is Kori Griswold, a player who redshirted last season. One thing that Onstead wants to continue to manage as the season progresses is getting Griswold the experience that she will need as the only returning goalkeeper for next year’s 2015 season. Griswold definitely has a strong person to look up to in Hendrickson, the reigning NorPac Defensive Player of the Year.
Cal Men's Golf
With a squad full of freshmen and sophomore in an obvious rebuilding year, the Golden Bears finished 2nd at the season opening (Golden) Gopher Invitational (hosted by Minnesota).
