Cal official visit weekend - Shay Fields, Chandler Leniu in attendance, and more

Bob Stanton-USA TODAY Sports

Two four-star recruits, two commits, and a whole bunch of guys we're trying to flip.

We've got a big official visit weekend this week, as Sonny Dykes attempts to make some last minute additions to the 2014 class. [I could be wrong, but it looks like this is the last big one, because there haven't been many mentions for people visiting on the 31st.]

Rob Likens is pretty darn excited.

Here's who is on campus, according to the available visit lists on Scout and 247sports. The rundown:

Previously committed

  • Michael Trani (OL) - La Mirada High School, Peoria (Ca.)
  • Kam Bennett (OL) - Peoria Centennial, Peoria (Az.)
  • Both guys have already been here on unofficials -- Trani became a Bear on his, actually. Good to have them back. Maybe they can swing some of the other recruits!

  • Shay Fields (WR) -St. John Bosco, Bellflower (Ca.)
  • Chandler Leniu (LB) - St. John Bosco, Bellflower (Ca.)
  • Noah Westerfield (DE) - Wakeland, Frisco, (Tx.)
  • Leniu and Fields are the big two, y'all. The Bears are desperately trying to snag Leniu on a flip, and Shay Fields should be making a decision soon -- if I recall correctly, he has a trip to Colorado next weekend (edit: BearGang says that he actually visited Colorado last weekend. Thanks!) but will be ready to announce soon after that. Either one would be a fantastic addition, although the need for Leniu is absolutely paramount, given the state of the linebacking corps.

Westerfield, as you may know by now, recently decommitted from Northwestern -- or perhaps more truthfully, had his offer pulled -- to take a trip out here, so you have to figure our chances are good. He did offer a pretty interesting glimpse into his visit so far, though.

    Currently committed elsewhere

  • Jonathan Vickers (RB) - North Florida Christian, Tallahassee (Fl.) Florida State
  • De'Eric Culver (CB) - Amos P. Godby, Tallahassee (Fl.) Iowa State
  • John Porchivina (LB) - Casa Grande, Petaluma (Ca.) Fresno State
  • Jaylen Johnson (DE) - Centennial, Corona (Ca.) Boise State
  • Garrett Gray (WR) - Marble Falls, Marble Falls (Tx.) Texas
  • Out of this group, the biggest addition -- if we could manage it -- would probably be Culver, a consensus 3-star recruit. Landing Darius White last weekend was nice, but he has limited eligibility as a JUCO transfer. Culver has similar dimensions -- 6'0, 180 -- and could prove to be a better long-term contributor.

With two backs already committed in the class, Vickers is less of an immediate need, and more of a luxury. Still, the depth chart sets up nicely for three 2014 backs, because we could stagger the Vickers-Watson-Enwere trio for future years. As of right now, it's Daniel Lasco and Khalfani Muhammad, and not a whole lot else. Florida State recently landed 5-star running back Dalvin Cook, which probably helped motivate this visit.
