11 Oklahoma (10-2) vs. 3 Alabama (11-1)
New Orleans, Louisiana
5:30 PM PT. TV: ESPN
January 1 has come and gone, but the bowls are not over. No sirree, Bob. There are six (count 'em, six) bowl games being played after New Year's Day. Remember when January 1st marked the traditional end of the college football season? Well, that tradition died long ago.
But I digress. Tonight's game is a good one, pitting against one another two legacy programs that share not only status as college football royalty but also the primary color of crimson. The crimson and cream of Oklahoma (10-2) matches up against the crimson and white of Alabama (11-1).
Alabama is in a position foreign to us in the college football proletariat: being in a BCS bowl game is a bit of a letdown. The Crimson Tide was chasing a third straight BCS national championship and looked to be well on its way to a trip to Pasadena when it began the season 11-0. But we all know what happened to Alabama's chase for the threepeat in the Iron Bowl against Auburn.
Because of that play, Alabama "settles" for the Allstate Sugar Bowl (a pretty good consolation prize, if you ask me).
As for Oklahoma, the Sooners were never seriously in the national championship picture, but still put together a very good season. Oklahoma lost only to Texas and Baylor, and capped off the regular season with an upset win against Oklahoma State in the Bedlam Rivalry, denying the rival Cowboys the Big 12 championship and a BCS bowl berth.
