Oh where to start about tonight's game. There was the good the bad and definitely the ugly. I like saving the best for last so we will start with the ugly.
The ugly: I know its a cop out but the ugly truly was the defense as a whole. It begins and ends with the defensive line. They had no push all night long against a much more experienced and talented ohio state offensive line. This is a really scary stat. OSU rushed for 332 yards! Yes i said that right. 332 yards just rushing! It doesn't get any easier as two weeks from now they will face the University of Nike Ducks who are rushing for 425 yards per game. To add insult to injury, Cal's pass defense/secondary is atrocious...still. That hasn't changed since the start of the season. It didn't help that an already thin secondary was hurt by injuries. (Yes I'm talking about you Avery Sebastian) The secondary was just awful tonight as they have been all season and I wish I could say it nicer...but I can't. Overall, the defense was just terrible and it doesn't get any easier as they have a bye week then they have to face the very athletic oregon ducks.
The bad: Oh run game how you underachieve... For having 3 very athletic running backs, Cal's running game is pathetic. Once again I wish I could say that nicer but I can't. 132 yards rushing... OSU's Jordan hall out rushed Cal by 36 yards... By himself! But it begins and ends with the offensive line. There is no shortage of talent in the backfield for the bears. Cal is young and inexperienced and they will get better but for now, it's bad but thank goodness for...
The good: Jared fricken goff! Up until this game goff had thrown for an average of over 465 yards per game but people were questioning how he would fair against OSU, possibly the toughest defense he will face all year, and man did he answer those questions. He threw for 371 yards and is still leading the nation in passing yards by a large margin. Possibly the most impressive aspect of this is the fact that he is doing this with an offensive line that gives him very little time in the pocket (see the bad:) especially compared to quarterbacks for teams like OSU. He is rushed to throw or escape the pocket on a consistent basis. And the even better thing... He is a freshman! If he was on a team that would compete for a bcs bowl, he would compete for the heisman but the sad reality is that the heisman does not go to the best player, but it is more of an MVP award but we will save that rant for a later time. But with how good he is now, it is scary to think about how good he will be in a couple of years.
The final word: Cal is a very talented team that has potential. They are young, inexperienced, and very banged up on the defensive side of the ball. They will continue to struggle for a couple more weeks but will pick things up and most likely come in at 6-6 and get a bowl bid. Contrary to bill parcells belief, cal's record will not be an accurate depiction of the talent they have this year. It is evident that the team is growing and gaining chemistry. Overall, there is a different feeling around cal football. It's more exciting to watch that is what really matters this year. The future definitely is bright for cal football.
Two weeks from now I will have another edition of the good, the bad, and the ugly. That should be an interesting one as I will reflect on how jared goff handled his first college away game at one of the most hostile environments in college football but for now... Go Bears!
