Without intending to be so until I semi-fell into it, I am a cancer researcher. Too easily, I fall into the experiments or the procrastination (hello, DBD) and forget the goal of vanquishing cancer. This weekend, however, will be full of reminders, as my friends, co-workers, and adviser will be riding in Pelotonia, and I'll be volunteering as well as cheering them on. Yes, that's a plug--the money raised will directly benefit my lab! (And other labs. You know.)
I look forward to the opening ceremony tonight and the 100 mile finish line tomorrow. (Really hardcore riders will be riding 180 miles over two days.) Seeing the community come together, seeing survivors, seeing scientists act like human beings--it all serves as a reminder of why I do what I do. Perhaps somewhere down the line, we'll cure cancer. And if we don't? We'll keep trying.
