Cal in Joe Mixon's top five

Russ Isabella-US PRESSWIRE

That's right. The man Marc Tausend - he of ManBearCal fame - named the top target of the 2014 class used an interview with College Level Athletes to announce two out of his top five teams yesterday...and they are:

Cal and Florida with top 10 finalists Tennessee, Oregon, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Oregon State, and Washington still presumably in contention for the final three spots.

The interview is linked here, but here's the carefully excerpted part that should send shouts of joy all through Strawberry Canyon:

Local favorite Cal has the inside track to Mixon's services. "To be honest, because it's close (Cal) and (Brendan) Bigelow is gonna be gone and that would be perfect for me to come right in and have an opportunity to start," said Mixon.

Did you get that? Hang on, let's read it again.

Local favorite Cal has the inside track to Mixon's services. "To be honest, because it's close (Cal) and (Brendan) Bigelow is gonna be gone and that would be perfect for me to come right in and have an opportunity to start," said Mixon.

The first big piece of news, of course, is that Cal has the inside track - Mixon would be the best recruit that Pierre Ingram has reeled in in his short time in Berkeley, and also a huge victory for the program as a whole, especially as it attempts to fight off more illustrious out-of-state suitors.

The second is this:

(Brendan) Bigelow is gonna be gone...

Woah, okay. Wow. Whether or not the junior tailback is NFL bound depends on a lot of things - namely, how he holds up under a full workload this season - but Mixon's comments seem to indicate that the Fresno Flash has already made up his mind. Even if Bigelow does leave after this season, a backfield combination of Lasco, Muhammad, Mixon [playing as a true freshman, obviously], and a redshirted duo of Vic Enwere and Tre Watson doesn't sound too shabby, right?

Mixon will announce his decision in January, at the Under Armour All American Game. It figures to be a long, dramatic ride until then, but it never hurts to know who's in the driver's seat.

Leave your thoughts on this news, as well as the future tailback situation below. And do try not to make too big of a mess after watching these highlights.
