This announcement is perhaps the least surprising news of the off-season, but that doesn't make it any less awesome. After taking over a 6th place team in the Pac-10 and engineering a two year turnaround that culminated in New Orleans for the Final Four, it was a question of when, not if.
Here's the official release from Calbears.com:
"Each and every day that I come to work, I am honored to be the Head Women's Basketball Coach at the top public institution in the world," Gottlieb said. "I get to coach tremendous young women and work with smart, passionate, committed people, both on my staff and in our athletic department. I am thrilled to sign this extension with the University of California, and I am beyond grateful for the belief in me demonstrated by Sandy Barbour and Chancellor Dirks. The leadership on the Cal campus and in our athletics department is second to none, and I'm proud of the true investment made to our women's basketball program."
No contract details have been released, and considering the relatively low profile of women's basketball, I don't really expect to see any. There was never any doubt that Sandy Barbour was willing to pay whatever the market rate is to retain a coach with the youth, energy, and personality to keep Cal amongst the nation's elite.
The extention 'only' adds two years to Gottlieb's contract, and what's really notable is how quickly she proved worthy of an extension. The talent on hand and Gottlieb's familiarity with the program certainly seemed to portend good things, but I don't think even the most optimistic of fans expected a conference title and Final Four so soon.
So yeah, Coach G is going to be around for a long time, which means it's as good a time as any to sit back and think about how lucky we are that she's ours!
