Cal Basketball Roundtable: How Would You Grade The Regular Season?

via Cal Bears Online

Grade the performance of Cal men's basketball this regular season! How did you think the Bears performed?

How would you grade our regular season performance based on expectations?

LeonPowe: B. We've slightly exceeded my season expectationst (despite the roller coaster way in which we did it) I think if we beat Harvard, UNLV and Creighton I'd move us up to an A-. if we we take those three games plus maybe today's Furd game, and one of UCLA/UW on the road, that would be a solid A.

Vincent S: Beyond stellar. From sweeping Oregon, to the scouring of McKale Center, to the home emasculation of UCLA, the last few weeks have been wonderful. I know the Bears were picked to finish 3rd in the preseason poll, but I had seriously questioned that pick - we had just lost the Pac-12 POY/DPOY in Jorge Gutierrez, as well as our most consistent low post offensive and defensive player in Harper Kamp. The Bears have shown heart, guts, and determination, and I'm proud of the job they've accomplished this year.

norcalnick: I think we ended up more or less meeting expectations, but in a very roundabout way. When the season started, I anticipated that Cal would challenge for the conference title, but probably end up falling short, but with a 1st round bye in the Pac-12 tournament and a spot in March Madness.

In the end, that's more or less what happened, except that Cal played well below their abilities in late December/January, then blew up down the stretch.

atomsareenough: Look, I deeply appreciate the dramatic turnaround and improvement we've seen this season, and it's a testament to the coaching staff and the players for figuring it out, but that has to be balanced out with our underachievement and poor play in January. I agree with Nick and LeonPowe that all in all, we just about met expectations, but in a roundabout way. In terms of the conference, we did fine, and really only the last game and the Washington game stand out in the negative column, and they're balanced out by the games at Arizona and Oregon, and the UCLA home game. I could have done without the losses to Harvard, Creighton, UNLV, and the blowout against Wisconsin though. All in all though, I'm excited about the development we've shown, and what we could be next year, especially if Allen Crabbe comes back.

LEastCoastBears: The Bears were picked to finish 3rd in the conference (based upon our returning talent and how Mike Montgomery's team have always finished close to the top) and that is likely where we will end up (fingers crossed still on epic Oregon and UCLA collapse on the road). The Bears certainly took the more insane route to get to where we are, but it's important to note that it is always better to peak late than early. Despite the setback on Wednesday, the Bears may still be peaking?
