I'm a privileged white upper middle class North American who has not experienced much hardship or suffering in my life. Therefore it is hard for me to relate to someone like Mandela, who was not just content with observing the injustice around him, but instead was spurred to act. But while I may not know what he went through, I can't help but be inspired and moved by what he accomplished. He was an inspirational figure, a forgiving and healing transitioner, and someone that stood as a symbol that acts of racism, persecution, and injustice could be fought back against, and eventually overcome. So today we mourn the loss of a great man and remember his legacy.
