Go Bears, Beat Cancer: Cal Lacrosse Alumni Rally for Their Own

On November 3rd, eight Cal Ladies Lacrosse alumni will be running in the Race for Hope 5k in Philadelphia, in support of the National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS). The mission of the NBTS to find better treatments and, ultimately, a cure for people living with a brain tumor as this a personal cause for these Golden Bears.

On May 18, 2013, former Cal Women Lacrosse player Steph Smith graduated from law school. The next day, she went for a run and had a seizure. Shortly after, she was diagnosed with a large brain tumor in her left temporal lobe. Like many others with brain tumors, it’s possible that Steph has had this tumor for many years, but the symptoms had not yet impacted her day to day life. She flew back home to Maryland with her parents to be seen by the Neurosurgery Department at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Since that day, Steph has undergone a craniotomy, completed radiation treatment - and is currently receiving oral chemotherapy – all the while, training for a half marathon, which she hopes to complete at the end of November. Remaining incredibly positive, open and strong; Steph has been an inspiration to us all.

Brain cancer research is extremely underfunded. Money is critical in the development of new treatment options and early detection. Please join us and Steph in the fight against brain tumors by donating to TEAM SMITH

For those in the Philly area, come on out and meet Steph and her lacrosse crew of Cal Golden Bears for a fundraiser and Cal football game watch at Tavern on Broad (Walnut and Broad) at 3:30pm on Saturday November 2nd. While we root for our beloved Cal Golden Bears to take out the Arizona Wildcats, we will also be raising funds for the National Brain Tumor Society. Drink Specials at Tavern are $3 domestic beers, $3 mixed drinks and $3 wine along with discount parking at the Hotel Bellevue. If you are in the area, come on out support these amazing Cal Golden Bears’ alumni and their great cause. Feel free to contact Shaun at 510-295-7619 for more info on this fundraiser in Philly.

Thanks in advance for your donation. Every little bit helps. GO BEARS, BEAT CANCER.
