BREAKING NEWS: Norcross (Ga.) DB Shon Akins commits to Cal!

All the usual caveats about pen to paper apply, of course, but exciting news is bubbling up from the recruit-o-sphere. Defensive back Shon Akins has committed to Cal. Here is the info we have so far:

ESPN's Kipp Adams Tweet:

Per his coach, Norcross (Ga.) DB Shon Akins has committed to #Cal. #Bears

Rival's Keith Niebuhr's Tweet:

Norcross (Ga.) DB Shon Akins has confirmed he committed to #Cal DB coach Ashley Ambrose a little while ago

His Rivals page also indicates that he has chosen Cal. Here are some quotes from Michael Carvell of the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Akins has never been to Cal. He was supposed to visit over spring break but the trip got pushed back to this summer. Nevertheless, Akins said he had gotten to know Cal’s coaches over the telephone well enough to go ahead and commit on Sunday.

"Something told me to go ahead and commit," Akins said. "They were the first to offer me. They showed me a lot of love and respect. So I decided to go ahead and commit."

Why Cal? "I just could really see myself playing there, I wanted to go out to the West Coast and see what football is all about out there."

This is great news! Welcome to Cal, Shon. We look forward to you repping the B+G for years to come. After the jump, some video highlights!

We'll have more on this commitment soon, but we just wanted to get the word out. GO BEARS!
