Harper/Jorge Giant Cut-Out Heads

Hello CGB,

It is getting near that time. The beloved Jorge Gutierrez and Harper Kamp are nearing their final games at Haas Pavilion. As you might remember, last year, I made a cut-out head of the MSF mean face, which eventually made its way to him, so I'm glad he had that token of appreciation. Last year was more of a last minute affair, however, and the quality of the image wasn't very clear unless viewed from a distance, and it was in black and white. This year, JABear and I want to do this right.

We believe we might be able to get a discount, but two huge cut-out faces in color will still add up to a few hundred dollars. We were wondering if anybody would be willing to donate a few dollars towards this cause to help alleviate the cost on these poor college students. We were thinking about setting up a PayPal...any better ideas? Thanks for your time, and GO BEARS!

*UPDATE* Okay, so I guess we'll be doing this through PayPal. If you wish to donate, please send money to the PayPal of frankcohen@berkeley.edu. Since we aren't sure yet as to the exact costs of the big heads (rough estimate is about $300, could easily be more or less), what we'll do is this: if we somehow raise more money than what we need to purchase the heads (and we'll of course put a significant amount of money towards the heads ourselves), we'll donate any extra money to Cal Athletics. (Does that sound fair?). Thanks!

*UPDATE #2* We're STOPPING donations! We've raised a very good amount of money! Thank you all for the generosity-you guys are THE BEST! We are placing the order about an hour from when this update was posted, so the cut-out heads should be ready for Thursday night! Thanks again and GO BEARS!

This is the best Jorge pic – the question is if the image resolution will be good enough.

Set-up the paypals

I have paypal dollars which will cost me more money and trouble to withdraw – so if I can use it to fund giant basketball heads, that will bring me more satisfaction than the actual dollars.

I'll be handling/prepping the images.

They need to be blown up to large sizes, so if ya’ll have links to high quality pictures, I highly appreciate it.

Are you having this made at a shop?

I’ve never actually done this so I could be totally wrong but I thought you could make one of these on your own.

I think you if you have a print program that prints giant pictures on several individual 8.5 X 11 sheets of paper all you would need is a pack of photo quality paper and a good printer and you can paste each of those sheets on to one of those art store pieces of giant plastic. Even if it took 20 sheets of paper and it was on glossy stock I wouldn’t see that costing more than $30-$40. The art store plastic would probably be around $10-$15, so I would hope you could get both of them done for ~$55 each.

I’m not sure how big you were looking to make these but you can get 2′ × 3′, full color, glossy stock poster from Staples Copy & Print for $37.99 each:

Here is a quick one I made for Jorge (although I’m not sure the link will work):

Jorge

I cannot contribute money ATM, but I hope this helps with the cost of the project.

Hmm

Yeah, we’re getting them made at Copy Central (on Bancroft). We’ve used them before, so we know we’ll like the end product, and they told us we’d get a discount on the head cut-outs (though not a huge discount). Plus, we’re planning on the heads being larger than 2’ by 3’. Thanks for the suggestion, though, we’ll look into this and see if this would be more cost effective while also giving us the best quality.

I'm not exactly sure how you made the MSF head last year

but the guy who made the Jim Boeheim head at Syracuse used the website www.blockposters.com to make his giant head, and according to him, it was a little tedious to make, but relatively cheap.

There’s more info on how the ‘cuse guy made Boeheim’s head here

That is amazing.

But I know from personal experience that our athletic department wouldn’t let something so large into Haas. ]:

I saw this picture on the home page and the heads look awesome:

Any more pics of the results?
