DBD 2.9.12 The CGB Cocktail Party
You are cordially invited to the Official* CGB Cocktail Party.
Location: Old Memorial Stadium
Dress code: Charles Tyrwhitt shirts or Cal hoodies/jerseys. Hats are optional.
Music: Multiple rooms of music. First with referenceable top 40 music. Second with classic rock, cause they don't make music like this anymore. Third with underground music (seriously, it pipes in from the tunnels). Fourth with absolute silence, because why do kids these days need so much music everywhere?
Food Menu: Jumbacos, In N Out, Chaat, SF Soup Co. If you don't like these options, please be sure to yell very loudly about how much your opinion is right.
Decor: Lots and lots of puppies. Also, posters of Aaron Rodgers, Marshawn Lynch, Desean Jackson, and, for some reason, Tom Brady.
Drink Menu: Hand-crafted beers, vintage wines, root beer floats, Rishis
Time:
22-29: 6 PM to 3 AM
30 to 35: 6 PM to whenever the wife calls
36 to 40: 7 PM to 10 PM (yawn)
41 to 50: Fall asleep before leaving
51 and over: 2 PM to Where is Everybody?!
Guests are totally welcome. Bringing of signicant others will result in unnecessary mocking by your host.
Mention "Doom" to our doorman (unemployed stanfurd law graduates) to skip the line.
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

Greek Politicians Reach Austerity Deal, Draghi Says
Draghi is not a vampire’s name
Greek political leaders struck a deal on a package of austerity measures, clearing the way for a swap to cut the nation’s debt and win its second rescue in two years.
Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos called European Central Bank President Mario Draghi to tell him "an agreement has been reached," Draghi said at a press conference today in Frankfurt. An announcement from Papademos’s office is expected shortly, a Greek government official who declined to be identified said today by telephone.
The accord came less than four hours before euro-region finance ministers hold an emergency meeting in Brussels to discuss the 130 billion-euro ($172 billion) lifeline and the swap that will impose a loss of about 70 percent for investors.

Jobless Claims in U.S. Unexpectedly Fall
[1]
The number of Americans filing first- time claims for unemployment insurance payments unexpectedly declined last week, indicating the labor market recovery is gaining traction.
Applications for jobless benefits decreased 15,000 in the week ended Feb. 4 to 358,000, Labor Department figures showed today. Economists forecast 370,000 claims, according to the median estimate in a Bloomberg News survey. The four-week moving average, a less-volatile measure of claims, declined to 366,250, the lowest since April 26, 2008.
The easing of dismissals is moving in tandem with a drop in the unemployment rate, which fell in January to a three-year low of 8.3 percent. Job creation also accelerated last month, showing the world’s largest economy is making headway in restoring the 8.3 million jobs lost during the 2007-2009 recession.
"The recent positive momentum over the past two months is being sustained," said Millan Mulraine, a senior U.S. strategist at TD Securities in New York, who projected 360,000 claims. "If we stay within this range, then we should see employment growth pick up."

They get their bread from the bakery a couple doors down. Apparently, it has won awards and is rated #1 in the Bay Area.
There’s a sit-down restaurant next door, too. Looks fancier. Only downside to Southie’s is there are only two tables for groups of 4. Everything is counter stools, or small tables for two. It really got crowded.

But, they use those baguettes for the pork belly and meatball sandwiches. It was a different type of roll for the crab. All were delicious – my girls were fighting over the bread and ignoring their meatballs.

In all seriousness, what is an appropriate gift for a dude on Vday? I was thinking:
iPhone 4S
iPad (but like the small one)
or
Shirt/tie from Thomas Pink
Or, is this one of those 1-way holidays?

Cash reserves are low, but earning potential is moderate. Given how often I wear a suit, $1000 seems like way too much. However, it’d be nice to fit well and look good, so <$200 is probably too little.

Men's Tennis Swat Hornets
No. 13 Golden Bears Handle Hornets, 6-1
The 13th-ranked California men’s tennis team (4-2) bounced back with a 6-1 victory at the Hellman Tennis Complex over visiting Sacramento State (0-3) on Wednesday, Feb. 8, after suffering its first two losses of the season the past weekend. After a tightly contested doubles point, the Golden Bears raced out to an early lead in singles and 42nd-ranked sophomore Ben McLachlan clinched the win for the Cal in under an hour.
“It was a good match for us to bounce back after last weekend,” said head coach Peter Wright. “Sacramento State has got a solid team and we had to play some really good matches on a lot of courts. They came out and played us tough, today, so it was good for some of our guys to get in there; playing again and get a win. A couple of our guys had tough weekends and it puts us on track for Hawai’i.”

Sharks Burned by Flames
Sharks turnover a win, lose 4-3 to the Flames
Contrary to your author’s (former) beliefs, it seems as if the Flames can bring the offensive heat every once in awhile.
They picked a heckuva night to do it.
Miikka Kiprusoff earned his 300th career win in his former barn, Olli Jokinen scored three goals for a hatless HP Pavilion hat trick, and the Sharks struggled with turnovers and intensity throughout the night in their 4-3 loss.
wtf is going on in this world?
Waffle House has stepped in to up the ante for ironic daters everywhere, offering reservations for a night of greasy, syrupy, wafflicious romance. Think sex is hard after consuming ten sliders? Try it after an "All Star Special" of toast, eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, and your choice of biscuit and gravy or waffle. Handicaps help us demonstrate true mastery! And for those looking to spice up their relashe, take the advice from one of Waffle House’s distinguished patrons. Chapel Hill is gorgeous. Durham is a shithole that should be scoured from the face of the earth. The only nice part of the town is the Duke capus and that literally borders Chapel Hill if I remember right.

I was there 2004 and 2005. Lived in Durham and worked at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business. Missed all of the 2004 season, but the bartender at Charlie’s on 9th went to ASU and out of Pac-10 pride always put the game on one of their many TVs for me (I had a bunch of Dukies rooting for us during the 2004 USC game!). It was interesting, but I’m happy to be back in the Bay Area.

Clips lose Cavalierly
Cavaliers 99 – Clippers 92 – No Excuses
So far this season, the Los Angeles Clippers have had an available excuse for almost every loss. Not that they’ve made excuses mind you, but Clipper apologists like myself would willingly make excuses for them. Losses to San Antonio and Chicago in games 2 and 3 came against good teams before the newly formed Clippers had had a chance to jell. Two losses came while Chris Paul was out of the lineup with a strained hamstring, and a third came in his first game back in which he shot 2 for 8. The most recent loss at home against Denver was ‘schedule’ loss, as the Clippers slogged through their fourth game in five nights.
How about “Cavaliers clip Clippers cavalierly”?

iPad 3 Unveil Set For Early March
Apple has decided to schedule a big media event for the first week of March to show off the iPad 3, reports AllThingsD. Citing sources familiar with Apple’s plans, AllThingsD says that the event will likely be held in San Francisco, at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, where Apple typically holds big product launches.
Timing for the retail availability of the actual device itself is expected to follow one to two weeks after the event.
As for details about the device itself, AllThingsD’s John Paczkowski wrote, “sources say it will be pretty much what we’ve been led to expect by the innumerable reports leading up to its release: A device similar in form factor to the iPad 2, but running a much faster chip, sporting an improved graphics processing unit, and featuring a 2048×1536 Retina display.”
Photos that purport to be components of the iPad 3 have been spied recently, and more or less confirm these details. The back cover was recently photographed and revealed that the device itself will be a little bit thicker than the iPad 2—most likely to accommodate a larger battery.

iPad 3: 5 Changes I Want
http://www.informationweek.com/news/hardware/handheld/232300363?itc=edit_in_body_cross
1. Retina Display:
2. Some Version of 4G
3. Better Cameras
4. Better Port Support
5. Thinner and Lighter: Yeah, I know the iPad 2 is one of the thinnest and lightest tablets out there, but I also know Apple can do better. Apple made significant weight and thickness improvements between iPad 1 and iPad 2. I’d like to see similar improvements between iPad 2 and iPad 3. Why? Usability. The iPad 2 is by no means heavy, but holding one for hours at a time still becomes tiring.
(holy #firstworldproblems)
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
I think that the display is already pretty good and I can’t say that I’ve noticed it seeming slow. When you start to get to “better port support” you’re starting to get into “I want a laptop replacement” territory and absent a keyboard, I just don’t see it. I mean, I could probably take care of 90% of my daily work with an iPad if I could Z through DBDs and access corporate portals for file sharing, but that doesn’t necessarily make it a good idea.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.
But have you seen retina displays before? It’s looks so good to your eyes!
Tony Gonzalez? University of California?
I have an ipad 2 and an iphone 4, and the missus has an iphone 4S, so yeah, I’ve seen the retina display. Frankly, if I could get gol tv fox soccer on my ipad (and yes I know they have a new app out), I don’t think I’d need a television.

1) video conferencing isn’t as popular as people thought it would be. Because people overestimate how much facial interaction is necessary (see sexting)
2) It’s only free/available if both people have wifi.

U.S., Banks Agree on Foreclosure Pact
Deal, Totaling as Much as $26 Billion With 5 Banks, Would Settle Federal, State Probes of Lenders .
The agreement covers five banks: Ally Financial Inc., Bank of America Corp.,Citigroup Inc., J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., and Wells Fargo & Co. Together, the five handle payments on 55% of all outstanding home loans, or about 27 million mortgages, according to Inside Mortgage Finance.
Federal and state officials planned to announce the settlement Thursday morning in Washington after putting the finishing touches on the deal following a marathon negotiating session that ended after midnight Thursday morning.
The agreement will include at least 49 states, and officials were finalizing a separate accord with one remaining holdout, Oklahoma.
The Obama administration made a full-court press over the past four days to secure the support of key state attorneys general, including those from Florida, California and New York. All three states are expected to be part of the announcement, people familiar with the situation said.

Home Prices Pop in Hot Valley Turf but Fall Elsewhere
In communities in the shadow of tech giants like Facebook Inc. in Menlo Park, housing prices are on a tear. Menlo Park led the Bay Area with a 52.7% increase in its median home sales price in the fourth quarter, with prices rising to $1.29 million from $840,000 a year earlier, according to DataQuick. Palo Alto’s median home-sales price jumped 12.5% to $1.1 million from $977,750, according to DataQuick.
Cities outside of Silicon Valley didn’t fare as well. Sonoma, for example, experienced a 24.1% drop in the fourth quarter in its median home-sales price to $356,000 from $469,000 a year ago, while Walnut Creek prices fell 18.3% to $580,000 from $709,500, according to DataQuick.

If Silicon Valley Costs a Lot Now, Wait Until the Facebook Update
PALO ALTO, Calif. — Imagine looking for a house in San Francisco or one of the nicer parts of Silicon Valley, which are already among the most expensive parts of the country. Now imagine having to bid against a legion of newly minted Facebook millionaires.

"I’m kind of worried — a thousand millionaires are going to be buying houses!" Connie Cao said as she and her family toured a home in a good school district here.
Her husband, Jared Oberhaus, was more optimistic. "Maybe sellers are sitting on their houses now, waiting for Facebook, and they’ll all come on the market at the same time," he said.
It will be some time before the first Facebook shares are sold to the public, and even longer before Facebook’s employees are able to turn their paper wealth into cash and officially take their places as the newest members of the 1 percent. But the mere anticipation of the event may pour a little kerosene onto what is already a fairly hot local real estate market.
When Ken DeLeon, a Silicon Valley real estate agent, recently sold an 8,000-square-foot house to a Facebook employee, he said, the movers showed up at the client’s old 1,000-square-foot home and asked, "Did you win the lottery?"
Silicon Valley has been good to Mr. DeLeon, a former lawyer, who said he sold $275 million worth of homes last year, and who is finishing up a memoir about overcoming illness, injury and loss that he calls "Why Do Bad Things Happen to Sexy People?"
Eh, I don’t think the effect will be nearly as large as people like this are anticipating. First, the people who stand to become the richest are millionaires already. They’ve been pulling money out for ages, and made fortunes at their previous jobs too (lots of ex-Googleaires there, for instance). Secondly, most people will not be fully vested right out of the gate, so even if they have $1M of options, they don’t have $1M of options to sell in six months. And even those who do have $1M to sell right now will only get $500K out of that, which isn’t going to buy them a $1M house because their salaries aren’t high enough to cover the mortgage on the balance.
TL/DR summary: some tens of people will newly be in the market for million dollar houses. Otherwise, business largely as normal.
With the $100 billion valuation …
The folks who joined about four years ago (and so will be mostly vested by now) will make at least about $15mm pre-tax. That’s at least 100 people, if not 300.
Fire Starkey. You... complete me.
Except that options distribution is not egalitarian. So lots of those people in their 20s will have like 1000-5000 options, and a few handfuls will have 100,000 (this is typically a VP-level distribution), and Zuck has millions.
Good point. Has anyone read the s-1? How much of the company do the employees own? There’s probably a back of the envelope way to calculate this.
Fire Starkey. You... complete me.

So, interesting. 90% of the Class B share options (the employee-held options) are already vested. Translated, those who have joined in the last couple of years don’t hold much equity. Those Class B options are locked up for the standard six months. Additionally, there are more RSUs that will be converted to shares after those six months but before 12/31/12, but they don’t say how many (there are 300M RSUs out there).
Overall, there are about 2 billion shares outstanding right now, held by 1180 people (assuming no overlap between A & B shares). Additionally, there are 259M options outstanding, but it appears that more than half of these are Zuck’s. Looks like the executive officers and directors, plus initial VCs, own 1.75B of those 2B shares.
So, let’s say 250M shares for the rest of them. How many emps? 5000? 50,000 on average, but that’s going to be skewed by some big holders at the top.
Probably not more than 12 houses though. unless they want to change them for hotels.
Cal: Bears with Books.

also, LOL @ 2bn shares. Can’t they issue them at a higher par or something? Jeebus.

Yeah, but won’t there be a ton of trickle-down? It’s not just the M dollar homes that will be affected, right? Lots of people will cash in on 50-500k and the pool of those people will push up housing prices all over the spectrum…
KEEP CALM
AND

Yes and no. Say Joe suddenly has $400K free and clear to use on a home, so he starts looking to buy something. If Joe makes around $100K (the typical software engineer salary according to Glass Door), he can afford a ~$300K mortgage, roughly. So, he can look at $600K houses to buy (because his mortgager is going to make him have a a year’s worth of living expenses in the bank since he’s a first time buyer) and it may create some price competition in this range, but frankly there’s not much inventory in this range on the Peninsula, so I’m not sure where they’re going to be buying.
Maybe not standalone homes, but I think there are a lot of decent condos in the south bay from 300-600k…
KEEP CALM

Plus, if Joe is married and s/o is earning, then they can start looking at more expensive homes.

hey college kids and recent grads
Wanna work for the Giants? Orange and Black Attack are the people that run around throwing t-shirts, between-inning promos, and so forth. I don’t know what it pays, but you can go to the games for free. Orientation will be Feb 16 but you have to have been asked based on your resume/appplication. So get one in if interested.
There are other internships listed, but you have to be ready for the “baseball employee lifestyle”. Low/no pay, long hours, every night at the ballpark.
And if you are interested in that, you might be better off working with one of the California League minor clubs around the state. Minor league clubs are pretty thinly-staffed, so your opportunities for “other duties as assigned” will probably be more than running around AT&T throwing t-shirts. And the minor league season is more school-schedule friendly as they start in April or later and wrap up around Labor Day.

When Monta Ellis, David Lee, and Stephen Curry play like this they have a legitimate claim to being a Big 3.
Wow.
What a fantastic outing from all 3 Warriors. Ellis brought the scoring with 48 points. Lee brought a triple-double. Curry brought some hot shooting and nice passing. It’s not often you see 3 guys on a team have lines like this:
Monta Ellis: 48 points (18-29 FG, 3-6 3pt, 9-10 FT), 7 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block
David Lee: 25 points (7-7 FT), 11 rebounds (with ZERO inside help), 10 assists (too bad Nellie never got a chance to utilize him as a Point Forward)
Stephen Curry: 16 points (7-9 FG, 1-2 3pt), 10 assists (only 3 turnovers), and 2 steals

Sacramento wants 80 mil from NBA:
Our friends James Ham and Rob McAllister of Cowbell Kingdom have a double dose of sourced entertainment and sports complex news. McAllister reported this week that the NBA is expected to bridge any feasible funding gap to get a plan for a new downtown facility approved; Ham reports that the city is looking for $80 million of that to come in the from of an up-front lease payment from the Kings and the NBA. The lease would be for 30 years, breaking it down to $2.67 million per year.
The other $50 million in private capital would come from AEG, the arena megalith that would operate the facility year-round. The city is hoping to receive City Council approval this month on a deal to lease the operation of downtown parking structures for $200 million in up-front payments — the lease could be for 30-50 years. That leaves another $50 million. The hotel association has committed to some level of investment via a room fee, but not at that level, and not necessarily with advance capital.

What The FBI Had On Steve Jobs.
http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2012/02/09/what-the-fbi-had-on-steve-jobs/
You’ve heard about things going on your permanent record? Steve Jobs had one, too.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation just made public its background check on the Apple co-founder. The agency assembled the investigation in 1991 because Jobs was being considered for a presidential appointment by George H.W. Bush to the President’s Export Council.
That position, which doesn’t require a Senate confirmation, serves as the national advisory committee on international trade. The Wall Street Journal/FINS.com requested the file through the Freedom of Information Act.
The background check showed Jobs would have brought a, well, different perspective to the executive branch.
The question of whether Jobs, who has admitted drug use in his youth, still used alcohol or drugs while at Apple comes up frequently in the file.

New FAA rules:
A new set of laws will require the FAA to ease up on the rules governing domestic drone use — and to find a way to integrate them into national airspace alongside regular aircraft.
Earlier this week, the Senate passed a bill by a vote of 75-20 that had been fought over in Congress for several years, which appropriates $63.4 billion for the FAA, and, among other things, requires the FAA to loosen restrictions on domestic drone use by September, 2015.
Currently, the FAA has a strict process of licensing agencies to operate Unmanned Aerial Vehicles within the U.S., and limits where they can be flown for safety reasons. Primarily, the unarmed UAVs are being used by some law enforcement agencies for surveillance and emergency situations.
The FAA was already planning to issue new, looser standards for issuing the licenses in the next couple of months, but the bill sets a hard deadline for those rules to be finished within 90 days.

ITS A FUCKING LINFERNO IN HERE:
- After that, Lin was excellent. In the second quarter, those drive-and-kicks started going to Steve Novak on the weak side and saw much happier conclusions, which in turn opened up the inside options a bit. Lin got his first points by picking Jordan Crawford in the backcourt and streaking coast to coast, then continued to pile ’em on with some brilliant drives to the basket. We saw some savvy-ass hesitation dribbles, including one that created enough space and confusion to let Lin score right up and over JaVale McGee. In the third, he kept right on driving and had twelve more points, including these two that made my eyes and teeth fall out of my head:

I like the idea of having a bright article of clothing as an eye-catcher, but that color totally clashes with the rest of the outfit, and it looks utterly ridiculous to wear bright pink socks with a drab tan/grayish suit and a muted dark tie. And I say this as someone who actually doesn’t mind a dash of pink with a suit.

Maybe government-controlled private enterprise has SOME issues?
USPS Loses $3.3B, Warns of Cash Drain
The U.S. Postal Service said it lost $3.3 billion in the quarter ended Dec. 31 — typically its strongest — and that it expects to run out of cash in October unless Congress agrees to cuts in facilities and employees.
"If the Postal Service is unable to reduce its operating costs by $20 billion a year by 2015, we may not be able to return to profitability," Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said at a board meeting in Washington today. "We may become a long-term burden to the taxpayers if we are not able to make these reductions quickly."
The ninth consecutive quarter of losses may increase pressure on Congress from the Postal Service and customers to approve legislation intended to return it to solvency.
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
maybe
it’s dumb to require them to be profitable while still requiring them to deliver all mail to every address in the US and all territories.

the issue is Congress
USPS is required to forward fund their pension even for employees they don’t have – by Congress. I don’t see any private enterprise being held to that, especially USPS’ competition. Eliminate that requirement, and most of the profitability problems disappear at once.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.

Yes, but if we get into this more, I fear its gonna turn into a huge political slapfight. A lot of people dont realize that Congress back in 2005 or so basically decided to destroy the Postal Service.

You misunderstand me. Let me break it down for you:
1. People who live in rural areas are more likely to vote Republican.
2. The Republicans are the ones who saw fit to essentially and inexplicably destroy the Post Office.
3. People who live in rural areas are more likely to be hurt by the destruction of the Post Office.
4. Thus, it is not in their rational self-interest to vote Republican on this particular issue.
5. Republicans have taken the interesting tack in the last several years of coming down on the sides of issues that are “more individual, than for the greater good.”

NO NO NO
As someone who works at Starbucks now (geez, I really haven’t commented here in forever), I can tell you baristas HATE these sorts of listicles. If you try to order ANY of those drinks listed above, I guarantee that you will be looked at as though you are insane. Following that, you had better be prepared to explain exactly what is in the drink you are trying to order.
Some drinks do have colloquial names, like the “Drity Chia” (Chai tea latte with a shot of espresso), or “Redeye” (brewed coffee with an added shot), but most of these named drinks are just BS that some overly creative customer or barista dreamed up. Company policy means we generally aren’t supposed to use these names anyway, to avoid confusion.
I've been Honked...
LOL. Of course. I pinky swear never to use these names. NOW, be honest, do you secretely hate & pity your regular customers? You can tell little old me…
Cal: Bears with Books.
Nope!
We love the vast majority of our regular customers. It’s nice to see familiar faces every day, and since both the baristas and the customer know what the order is going to be, it helps us provide faster service. Everybody is happy, especially if your order is something complex like a Venti 3-pump Sugar-Free Hazlenut Extra-Wet Soy Cappuccino.

"Extra-Wet"
is only applied to Cappuccinos. Since a cap is just espresso, a small amount of steamed milk, and a bunch of foam, some customers customize the amount of milk/foam they want. “Wet” means you want more milk, less foam. “Dry” means the inverse.

Dick Harden to miss 2012:
Feb 9, 2012 – After writing about baseball for ten years, I’m always searching for ways to describe oft-injured players. I’ve used “hamstrings of polenta” and concocted scenarios where guys like Nick Johnson are dragged around the bases in a full body cast attached to ropes, pulleys, and levers. There are only so many ways to suggest that a guy can’t stay on the field, so it’s only partly awful to have fun with it.
But Rich Harden. Man. There’s just nothing funny about that. It was the first piece of news I read this morning, and it was like scorpion babies in the coffee grounds.

Karl Dorrell has a job:
Feb 8, 2012 – Former UCLA head coach Karl Dorrell has been named as the new quarterbacks coach for the Houston Texans, replacing the departed Greg Knapp, who became the new offensive coordinator of the Oakland Raiders.
Dorrell and head coach Gary Kubiak have a long working relationship together. Dorrell worked alongside Kubiak on Mike Shanahan’s Denver Broncos staff for three seasons before leaving to coach the Bruins. At UCLA, Dorrell compiled a 35-27 record. Dorrell comes to the Texans from Miami, where helped developed Matt Moore during a turbulent season for the Dolphins. He’ll work in the shadow of Knapp’s lauded 2011 season, where the quarterbacks coach was credited for readying rookie quarterback T.J. Yates to start – and win – after the team lost Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart.

These days, looking good is a must. Here are a few tips from the experts to help keep you in style:
Remember: Distressed and/or acid-washed denim never goes out of style
Pants should be “cuffed,” or rolled, at least six inches above the ankle
Wear extremely expensive clothes only; they are made from finer materials and look better
Eat bath salts to make your innards smell pretty
If your T-shirts have yellow stains under the arms, cut the underarms out before wearing
Never wear glasses on a date; your potential mate will think you are undesirably smart
There are many excellent “big and tall” shops that cater to fat hogs like yourself
Keep collars turned up at all times
With scissors, cut the hems of other women’s skirts so their length matches your own
Wearing green shirts on Thursdays lets all your classmates know that you are a homosexual
If you have wide hips, cover your imperfections with a gigantic tarp

.Buffett: Bonds Among Most Dangerous Assets
[1]
Warren Buffett, the billionaire chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., said low interest rates and inflation should dissuade investors from buying bonds and other holdings tied to currencies.
"They are among the most dangerous of assets," Buffett said in an adaptation of his annual letter to shareholders that appeared today on Fortune magazine’s website. "Over the past century these instruments have destroyed the purchasing power of investors in many countries, even as these holders continued to receive timely payments of interest and principal."
Buffett, 81, who built Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire from a failing textile maker into a firm selling insurance, energy and jewelry through acquisitions and stock picks, echoed Laurence D. Fink, chief executive officer of BlackRock Inc. Fink said this week that investors should be 100 percent in equities, because of depressed stock valuations and the Federal Reserve’s pledge to keep interest rates low.

I wonder if he'd still be with the W's
If the W’s didn’t have to release him when they made the offer sheet for DeAndre Jordan
Lin was released in late December by the Rockets to make room for Houston’s signing of Samuel Dalembert. Houston already had three point guards on its roster, and all of their contracts were guaranteed. Lin had a non-guaranteed contract.
Earlier in the preseason, Lin was released by the Golden State Warriors, who let him go to create enough salary cap space for a four-year offer sheet worth nearly $43 million to then-restricted free agent DeAndre Jordan. The Clippers matched the offer.
The Knicks signed Lin off of waivers two days after he was released by the Rockets.

He had position on the left side (shot from right), went towards the basket (might have been pushed in the back a bit), and the ball bounced off the rim and over him. He reached up and back and just tipped it up and it hit the backboard and went in.
He was the one that kept them in the game in the 1st 10 min or so. He was on fire.

Up 10 with like 3 min left and couldn’t close the deal. UNC has been horrible at defending the 3 this whole year.

What should I do?
My daughter’s school is having a silent auction fundraiser next month. One of the organizers told me that one of the items was a football autographed by Andrew Luck. She asked me if I would be interested since I was from the Bay Area. I said indeed I would. Now what should I do at the auction.
1. Let a Stanford Alum win the bidding for the prized Andrew Luck memorbilia, but drive the price up since I know they can afford it.
2. Try to buy the item in question so I can burn it and post the vid on youtube, but bow out if the bidding gets to high.
3. Win the auction at all costs to destroy this piece of evil.

CAN WE CHANGE MEETING LOCATION!!! The Lab
I am sitting in a very cool place right now, right next to the Galen Center. It’s the Lab. It’s right next to the Galen Center and seems very cool… plus it’s happy hour so just got my first beer. Let me know if this works. For the “inconvenience” first round will be on me ;-)
Haha… the lab… I’ll need to figure out how to get down there.

I am positive there are buses that just shoot down Fig.
This is a much better location… we can eat, have some drinks then just walked 100 feet to the arena.
Can anyone with a car pick me up at 8th at Fig? If it is inconvenient, forget about it.

Cruzin, you are far more interesting than you have previously indicated to us.
Claus Von Wendel is the bearded ruler of his own ramshackle kingdom on a forgotten, windswept island in the western Delta.
He lives on a rusted fleet of hulking barges, which includes a 20-ton crane that juts, perhaps arrogantly, into the sky above Fisherman’s Cut.
Outside his bedroom window, he plucks fresh black bass from the milky-green waters. Sparrows are allowed to set up nests inside his house.
The 60-year-old East Prussia native enjoys the natural serenity of Bradford Island and its “potential for self-sufficiency.”
Hahahahaahahahah that is the very article that inspired me to make that email address when I was in my ironic punk rock phase in high school!!!! (It is now just my more anon email) Honestly, thanks for finding it, I had the actually article at some point, but its long gone now.

I have been reading this blog on an occasional basis for a while (years) and have obtained a lot of interesting and helpful information about Cal. I am a Husky fan, but I don’t really have any strong ill will toward opponents or their fans. I am genuinely interested in each team’s strengths and weaknesses and I enjoy the community nature of Pac 12 football, and each team’s respective blogs. To me, being a part of (B)west coast football means being relatively chill, we have no cutting down or poisoning of rivals’ trees for example. I share everyone’s annoyance in Trolls who post negative comments just for the sake of being a D-bag, and I don’t engage in that.
Accordingly, I can say other than today I don’t think I have ever posted on an opponent’s blog. That said, having read all of this site’s recent posts about Tosh and other coaching moves, I feel compelled to post a statement: These recent posts and comments have really detracted from what is otherwise an interesting and informative site. I don’t have any defense of Tosh as I don’t claim to know all of the facts. I am just truly sorry to see this kind of approach taken by what I previously counted on for interesting and informative perspective on the Cal program. Numerous comments by some of the site’s key contributors regarding Seal clubbing and Photoshopped insulting images of Tosh? These are unfortunate posts by what I presume are fairly average Cal fans who consider themselves good people.
I am sure someone will respond to my comment by stating I should vote with my feet and simply not return to the site. I will do so. I just wanted to note my disappointment about it given my previous interest and reliance on the content and perspective from all of the contributors.

Attractive woman is stupid:
One Victoria’s Secret angel might be turning her back on lingerie modeling but she’s not giving up her modeling wings.
Model Kylie Bisutti, 21, has decided to leave Victoria’s Secret because it clashes with her Christian beliefs.
"I just became so convicted of honoring the Lord and my body and wanting to be a role model for other women out there who look up to me," Bisutti said today on "Good Morning America."
The California native beat out 10,000 hopefuls in 2009 to win the Victoria’s Secret Model Search. She was 19 and recently married at the time.
But wearing the coveted angel wings and walking the runway with Adriana Lima and Miranda Kerr wasn’t quite what Bisutti had hoped for.
"I was growing in my relationship with the Lord and my faith. I’m a strong believing Christian," Bisutti told "GMA" of how her thoughts on the job she has described as her "absolutely biggest goal in life" began to change.
"It was more of just a heart issue for me," she said.
Though Bisutti has cited her husband and her desire to keep their marriage special as factors in her decision to leave her lingerie modeling days behind, she said the decision was hers alone.

Get this. Back in high school, you could only apply to the UC System, and you had to rank the campuses 1-8 and you only got into ONE.
When I was in HS, probably before you were born, you applied to the system. And then you ranked the campuses in the order you would like them to consider you. If your first choice accepted you, you were set. But if they rejected you, ranking the second choice was strategic. UCLA and Davis typically got enough students ranking the 1st that you had no chance as a 2nd choicer, so you had to weigh your options carefully. Once you got accepted to one campus, your application was done.
since we are close in age
I must have totally screwed this up. Good thing I got into Cal and UC Merced didn’t exist yet.

I am first in my family to attend college, so there wasn’t the push for the ivys as for other people. They would have been proud of me if I went to community college and lived at home.
Cal: Bears with Books.
Thats itneresting. Im like the 3rd generation to go to college (and prolly woulda been 4th generation if my great grandparents hadnt been the ones to emigrate and work in the Lower East Side sweatshops).

We had a few students in our class lose it a little.
One girl got into a bizarre love triangle that ended with one of her bfs(also a dental student) showing up at housing and pulling a gun.
Then, there was the girl that passed out and needed an IV because all she was eating was rice with soy sauce. She was so worried about getting things perfect that she didn’t want to take the time to shop, cook, or even eat out. Sad thing is that she was naturally gifted. Helluva lot more skilled than I ever was, anyway.
Playing a weekly game of basketball is all that kept me mostly sane.

Both are pretty good IMO. I’ve only had the round ones when they are fresh out of the fryer—some Chinese restaurants include them with dishes (peking duck w/ sweet buns). The french fries shaped ones are pretty tasty and a bit saltier than the other.
Tony Gonzalez? University of California?
Yah not the ones you fry. The ones you eat straight out of the bag.
But those chinese ones sound good too

Hoop Dreams
The crowded NBA schedule is hurting the quality of play. And creating one of the best seasons ever.
http://www.slate.com/articles/sports/sports_nut/2012/02/the_lockout_shortened_nba_season_is_hurting_the_quality_of_play_but_fans_are_watching_in_record_numbers_.html
The damage is also visible in terms of turnovers. So far this year, 14.2 percent of plays have ended in turnovers. The previous two seasons, only five teams were that bad at controlling possession.
But here’s the wrinkle: The audience is loving it. NBA ratings are up. Way up. As of Feb. 2, viewership on regional cable was up 12 percent, on ESPN it was up 23 percent, over-the-air broadcasts up 36 percent, NBA on TNT up 50 percent, and NBA TV viewership was enjoying a 66 percent increase in ratings.
McDonald's hamburgers lure naked man off downtown tower
Police were able to lure a naked man who spent hours atop a downtown radio tower with McDonald’s hamburgers.
The man climbed to the top of the tower Wednesday night. At one point, police sources said, he asked for hamburgers from McDonald’s. Officials complied, and he agreed to come down after eating his meal.
The 45-year-old Arizona resident was uninjured. It was unclear why he climbed the structure, which is part of a city personnel building just west of the downtown skyline.

J.P. Morgan
Dear Sir or Madame:
I am an ambitious undergraduate at NYU triple majoring in Mathematics, Economics, and Computer Science. I am a punctual, personable, and shrewd individual, yet I have a quality which I pride myself on more than any of these.
I am unequivocally the most unflaggingly hard worker I know, and I love self-improvement. I have always felt that my time should be spent wisely, so I continuously challenge myself; I left Villanova because the work was too easy. Once I realized I could achieve a perfect GPA while holding a part-time job at NYU, I decided to redouble my effort by placing out of two classes, taking two honors classes, and holding two part-time jobs. That semester I achieved a 3.93, and in the same time I managed to bench double my bodyweight and do 35 pull-ups.
I say these things only because solid evidence is more convincing than unverifiable statements, and I want to demonstrate that I am a hard worker. J.P. Morgan is a firm with a reputation that precedes itself and employees who represent only the best and rightest in finance. I know that the employees in this firm will push me to excellence, especially within the Investment Banking division. In fact, one of the supporting reasons I chose Investment Banking over any other division was that I know it is difficult. I hope to augment my character by diligently working for the professionals at Morgan Stanley, and I feel I have much to offer in return.
I am proficient in several programming languages, and I can pick up a new one very quickly. For instance, I learned a years worth of Java from NYU in 27 days on my own; this is how I placed out of two including: Money and Banking, Analysis, Game Theory, Probability and Statistics. Even further, I am taking Machine Learning and Probabilistic Graphical Modeling currently, two programming courses offered by Stanford, so that I may truly offer the most if I am accepted. I am proficient with Bloomberg terminals, excellent with excel, and can perform basic office functions with terrifying efficiency. I have plenty of experience in the professional world through my internship at Merrill Lynch, and my research assistant position at NYU. In fact, my most recent employer has found me so useful that he promoted me to a Research Assistant and an official CTED intern. This role is usually reserved for Masters students, but my employer gave the title to me so that he could give me more work.
Please realize that I am not a braggart or conceited, I just want to outline my usefulness. Egos can be a huge liability, and I try not to have one.
Thank you so much for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Best,
Mark

KBB hands out inaugural Total Cost of Ownership awards to Kia, Audi
Kia has taken home the first ever Kelley Blue Book award for Total Cost of Ownership among consumer brands. As you might expect, the award goes to brands and vehicles with the lowest projected ownership costs. KBB examines depreciation, fuel costs, fees associated with finance and insurance, maintenance costs and state fees. Both the Optima sedan and Sportage CUV helped Kia cinch the win this award’s inaugural year.
Kelley Blue Book also examined the cost of ownership among luxury brands, and Audi took the top nod in this category. KBB specifically pointed to the German automaker’s low depreciation and good average fuel economy as reasons for the brand’s win. The A3, A4 and Q5 all helped the automaker in the total cost of ownership evaluation.

A busy week for Aaron Rodgers moves on to the golf course Thursday — one of the most famous golf courses in the world.
Rodgers will tee up in the Pebble Beach Pro Am. He’ll be paired with tour pro D.J. Trahan.
None of the Wisconsin guys are playing this weekend, unfortunately for Rodgers.
Trahan has two career wins on tour and finished fourth last week in Phoenix.
Rodgers is listed as a 6 handicap. He starts at noon Wisconsin time Thursday.
The other group in his foursome is Jim Furyk and Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish fame.

Cyber Power Index
Measuring the drivers of cyber power across the G20 countries
http://www.cyberhub.com/CyberPowerIndex
1. UK
2. USA! USA!
3. Australia.
About the research
The Cyber Hub provides an overview of the digital arena. As governments and businesses strive to remain competitive in a cyber era, the Economist Intelligence Unit, sponsored by Booz Allen Hamilton, has set out to understand the significance of cyber power today. The research is built on several integral parts: an interactive index that assesses specific aspects of the cyber environment of the G20 countries, and a series of research papers that examine the implications for the business community.
About cyber power
Cyber power is created when a complex digital information network is combined with a secure and robust physical infrastructure and developed by a skilled workforce. While in the physical realm, the size of something is constrained by various factors, in the virtual realm, size becomes irrelevant. As a result, information and the power it generates can expand almost without limits. This allows small businesses, individuals and countries with limited resources to use cyber power to compete with the traditional big players—and challenge the rules that govern the global economy today.

Dodgers have bumper crop of pitchers
http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/story/_/id/7555302/los-angeles-dodgers-farm-system-bumper-crop-pitchers-rise
The patchwork roster surrounding established Los Angeles Dodgers stars like Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw this year would hint at a dearth of minor league chips to play with, but De Jon Watson would encourage you to ante up.
The Dodgers’ assistant general manager in charge of player development has more than a poker hand’s worth of serious starting pitcher candidates rising through the system, and would even argue for a few wild cards among the position players.
“It’s been good stuff, man,” Watson said of the franchise’s depth at starting pitcher. “Our kids are coming. It’s great to have that type of competition. … If you have a hiccup or someone goes down for a little bit, you have a legitimate option waiting in the wings. The key is being as sharp as they can possibly be when that opportunity arises so you really don’t miss a beat.”
That doesn’t change the Dodgers’ pattern of leaning toward veterans at the start of the season. With Hiroki Kuroda leaving as a free agent and the team’s 2010 minor league pitcher of the year, Rubby De La Rosa, recovering from Tommy John surgery, the Dodgers signed Aaron Harang and Chris Capuano rather than hand a starting rotation slot to Nathan Eovaldi, who had a 3.09 ERA in six starts at age 21 late last summer.
Shortstop Dee Gordon is the only 2011 Dodgers rookie who has the inside track on a starting spot with the team this season. Gordon, who had 24 stolen bases in 56 games and a .325 on-base percentage (.398 in September), will look to capitalize on his hot finish.
“The biggest thing to look for from him is going to be his on-base percentage,” Watson said, “because his speed is going to change how they pitch to the guy that’s behind him. He’s going to apply pressure both from an offensive standpoint and a defensive standpoint for the opponent. So he has to get on base. For us, his key is understanding what type of hitter he is, understanding the strike zone.”
Kershaw!!
FTW…4 times against Lincecum.
Wish they had kept Kuroda though.

The World's New Tallest Skyscraper Will Be in...Azerbaijan?
http://curbed.com/archives/2012/02/09/please-welcome-the-new-new-worlds-tallest-skyscraper.php
Those mighty Kingdom Tower guys are probably crying their eyes out right about now! In the spitfire race to build the tallest edifice on the globe, there’s a new frontfronner: Azerbaijan Tower, a kilometer-tall structure that’s set to break ground in 2015 in the Republic of Azerbaijan in Eurasia. If you don’t usually equate Azerbaijan with, say, skyscrapers, it’s because this beast will essentially be the first, rising above the Caspian’s Khazar Islands, a 41-island manmade archipelago that has yet to be developed to its $100B glory. And compared to the Burj Khalifa, currently the world’s tallest building at 2,723 feet, and Saudi Arabia’s planned Kingdom Tower (3,280 feet, not a mile, as Curbed previously reported), Azerbaijan’s 3,444-foot mass will go unrivaled.
