Former Cal golfer Charlie Wi is tied for the lead after the first round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Wi carded a tournament course record 61 on Thursday playing his first round at the par-70 Monterey Peninsula Country Club. Wi’s matched the nine-under par rounds by both Dustin Johnson and Danny Lee, who both produced scores of 63 at par-72 Pebble Beach.

Wi’s 61 tied his career PGA low for the third time and also tied the lowest round shot in the PGA in 2012. His 28 on the front nine set a MPCC tournament record, besting the old mark of 30 recorded by Brian Gay and D.J. Trahan in 2010.

“I didn’t even have a score in mind,” Wi said. “I just wanted to make sure that my execution was good out there and luckily I was able to drop some putts.”

Li’s round consisted of an eagle, seven birdies and 10 pars.

Kings 106, Thunder 101: ARCO Thunder > Oklahoma City Thunder

That was absolutely amazing. With all the hype going into the game beforehand and the fact that Oklahoma City was the best team in the league, this was a night that seemed like it could have been ripe for disappointment. But it lived up to all the hype and more as the Kings pulled out the victory over the Thunder.

Sharks Gameday: Woes In The Windy City

I’m not sure what surprises me the most about the Blackhawks this season— the fact that they come into tonight having lost six games in a row in pretty convincing fashion, or the fact that they’ve managed to remain in the thick of the Western Conference home ice race despite getting some absolutely horrendous goaltending nearly all season long.

Cal Plays Host To No. 12 Stanford Sunday

The Californian women’s gymnastics team will host No. 12 Stanford in an action-packed meet on Sunday at noon inside Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears will be competing simultaneously with the California men’s gymnastics team, as they also host Stanford along with Oklahoma.

The Golden Bears are 4-2 overall after earning consecutive victories against UC Davis along with a win over Seattle Pacific the last two weeks. In its last meet, Cal scored a 193.275 overall, led by a score of 49.150 on the uneven bars.

In the last few months, dozens of brass sousaphones — smaller tubas used in marching bands — were taken from schools in Southern California.

Though the police have not made any arrests, music teachers say the thefts are motivated by the growing popularity of banda, a traditional Mexican music form in which tubas play a dominant role.

Teachers point to the targeted pattern of the burglaries: the expensive brass tubas and sousaphones, which cost $2,000 to $7,000, are pilfered, while electronics, cheaper fiberglass tubas and other brass instruments are usually left behind.

A leader of Greece’s governing coalition pushed back against German demands for deeper budget cuts to get the bailout needed to prevent a financial collapse.

In Athens, unions struck for the second time this week and police used tear gas to counter protesters. George Karatzaferis, who heads one of the three parties supporting interim Prime Minister Lucas Papademos, said he wouldn’t support austerity measures worked out for a rescue. He spoke hours after German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told lawmakers in Berlin that Greece was missing deficit targets.

"What has particularly bothered me is the humiliation of the country," Karatzaferis, whose Laos party has 16 members in the 300-seat parliament, said in televised comments. "Clearly Greece can’t and shouldn’t do without the European Union but it could do without the German boot."

Schaeuble said that current plans would leave Greece’s debt as high as 136 percent of gross domestic product by 2020, according to two people in the meeting who spoke on condition of anonymity because it was private. That compares with the 120 percent foreseen in the 130 billion-euro ($172 billion) bailout being negotiated. Debt was about 160 percent of GDP last year.

This could bode well for other social networking companies going public

LinkedIn Corp. (LNKD), the biggest professional-networking website, rose in extended trading after it reported quarterly sales that more than doubled and forecast higher 2012 revenue, buoyed by advertising and subscriptions.

Fourth-quarter revenue surged to $167.7 million, the Mountain View, California-based company said in a statement yesterday. That topped the $159.8 million average analyst estimate in a Bloomberg survey. Sales this year will be $840 million to $860 million, LinkedIn said, compared with the $834.1 million prediction.

The company, which first sold shares to the public in May, said membership jumped to more than 150 million from 131.2 million in the third quarter. LinkedIn is signing up more professionals for its subscription services and luring advertisers who want to reach the growing user base.

The fourth quarter "exceeded our expectations for member engagement and business growth," Chief Executive Officer Jeff Weiner said in the statement.
