Cal 68, ASU 47 Post Game Thread: Bears Cruise
Not much to say about this one - Cal took care of business in very clinical fashion, and as a result the bench got a ton of playing time. ASU turned it over 20 times, and Cal overcame some early sloppiness to pull away. The final score flattered the Sun Devils, who trailed by 30 for most of the 2nd half.
Well done Bears, and good luck in L.A. We may not be front-runners in title the race any more, but we're still right in it.

Pretty much as expected, which was nice.
The most significant development I thought was that Emerson was the first guard off the bench, and played twice as many minutes as Smitty. I assume that after 5 TOs in 10 min on Thursday, Smitty started to slide toward Monty’s doghouse.
Emerson played better D than I’ve seen from him, and was not a black hole on O. I’m interested in what the guard rotation will be in LA.
I’d imagine more of the same. Probably won’t see as many early minutes from Murray unless we’re cruising. If nothing else, ’sc plays pretty tough defense.

I’m wondering if Monty is going to think about using him as the guy who gives our starters those 2 minute breaks. If the guy doing that on Thursday had just been neutral, and not terrible, we’d have been in a much better position. Lately, when Smitty’s been on the floor in tough spots, we’ve been giving up a ton.
Murray always seemed like he’d be better suited for that instant energy off the bench role. It’s just that he would get lost on D and look lost on O.
I’d love to see him figure it out – he just needs to play like Smith did last year. Steady would be fine.

Just think if this team had Seeley (Averaging 16.5 ppg and 5 rpg at Fullerton), Franklin (funny that he is playing 14 fewer minutes per game at Baylor than he was at Cal, but still a talented scorer who could have provided that spark off the bench) , Amoke (12ppg and 8 rpg at Fullerton) and Zhang (he was raw, but was developing and undoubtedly impacted the defensive end). Fullerton, btw, is no slouch at 14-7 with Amoke and Seeley really leading the way for that team in the Big West.
Oh well, what could have been. I love the heart and hustle these guys play with and Monty just keeps showing us what a great coach we have, he makes the most of his talent and I think we are the best coached team in the conference.

I continue to believe we’re better off without Franklin, but yes, having some or all of the rest of those guys would be helpful. The root of our depth problems are the big holes in the Jorge and Smith “recruiting classes.”
I agree that Monty is among the best teachers and in-game coaches in the country, and I’m happy we got him, but we’ve got to get deeper, and add an NBA level talent, to duplicate his success at furd.
I can’t say I’m missing G-Frank, but yeah, the rest of those guys would have been great to have still :-/ That could’ve been an Elite 8 team maybe.

Really glad to see Murray both 1) get a chance; and 2) do well with it. He’s athletic and he has decent size, so I’d like to see if he can step up and contribute. It would help so much.
Glad to see Rossi get a chance. He was pressing a bit, but he was active and wasn’t too big of a liability :)

Crabb & Kamp getting xrays?
Word from Cal is Crabbe and Kamp are both underdoing X-rays immediately after the game.
http://www.ibabuzz.com/beartalk/2012/02/04/basketball-asu-game-thread-6/
WTF? Anyone know what’s going on here?
Kamp jammed a finger on his non-shooting hand and Crabbe rolled an ankle. Both kept playing and neither injury seemed serious, so I would guess that it’s just precautionary.

I thought it was on his left (shooting) hand?

Are they doing the x-rays at the SAHPC x-ray room?

Ah, that makes sense... thanks
Did not manage to catch the game so that’s the first thing I saw in the recap.
At the rate I see fiatlux in the student section
I want to see some tuition and that class list!
Joking of course, I just wish she’d fill up without the help of alums and young kids being necessary

I was STUNNED how few students were on the bench today… it was nice to see it fill in those with other honorary seniors ;-)
all in all, not a terrible crowd today… just shy of 9K. I mean, that’s not good either but not terrible. Why winning is so important… my guess had we won Thursday we would have been over 10K.
Glad to see us win this one easily
I only caught the last 10 minute or so and Brandon Smith with Bak, Rossi, Behrens, and Powers lineup wasn’t that sharp at all.
Even though the LA schools are still down this year, the LA trip is always pretty tough. Maybe we can more easily win against UCLA this year with the game not at Pauley (not perhaps not getting much UCLA fan attendance).
Go Bears!
So… Who do we play during our last home games? I’ll attend both LA games, but i wanna see Jorge and Harper at least once in our home environment
no bear, no care

amazing show
I would definitely recommend downloading and watching the 3 episodes 2nd season from the internet. PBS won’t show it until May.

Probably. Also, I think it’s probably easier to accomplish something like that when College Gameday is in town and you’re ESPN’s game of the week.
Also helps to be a top-5 team in the country.

I’m looking at these shirts, and there’s a wide variety (although it’s maybe half comprised of one particular shirt, so there was probably some kind of giveaway). But you’ve got all kinds, old guys, couples, young people…all wearing gold. I’m not entirely sure that’s entirely a result of being a top 5 team, and that there’s not a cultural component.
In other words, I wonder if our alumni will ever buy in like I’m seeing on TV right now. I’ve lived through some trendy times in Cal sports, and some full Oakland/Cow Palace arenas, but I’m still not sure a gold out like this could have been pulled off.
Well, I also am thinking back that probably most Mizzou shirts I’ve ever seen have been gold, because the other color is black. For us, blue is the dominant color in our apparel. So it’s not that Cal fans don’t have Cal clothes, it’s just that we have blue stuff.

I think maybe if you’re a Mizzou fan you’ve got something yellow in the closet, whereas a lot of Cal fans don’t. And, perhaps Mizzou’s season ticket holders are a little less “sophisticated” than ours.
I've done mass production of t-shirts before
It’s not super difficult or expensive to get about 10k t-shirts printed. With proper planning you could probably pull this off for $3.50 a t-shirt – so figure maybe 45k to pull off the promotion.
The gold v blue clothing point is fair, although I was at the furd game and it’s not like I felt I was in a sea of blue (great crowd though). I guess the first thing to worry about is why a team in contention for a conference championship isn’t selling out.
We sold that game out.

Last Hass game soon
Harper’s and Jorge’s senior night (Oregon State) is coming up soon. How about a Mexican/Southwest night theme? Sarape out Hass? Senior (Spanish male) night?
Señor night :)

You know, if Wallace and Ricky are what I think they’re going to be (and especially if Rossi gets healthy and he and Emerson develop), we could play the Missouri style next year. At least in spurts, with a thin frontcourt. Either Solo or Krav are perfect to play the Ratliffe role. And Crabbe has the size and rebounding ability to play the English role, although he’d have to improve his post D.
So now you know what to look for if they hire me as head coach.
Thanks, we’ve got your resume on file :)

You know – we’ve been looking for Crabbe to improve his offense, but I think unnoticed is just how much better a rebounder he is this year. He’s been rebounding HARD.
Yes, he’s been a beast on the boards. He’s outrebounding Harper, which is especially impressive since Harper has 20 more offensive boards (meaning Harper is generally positioned for Oboards while Allen is out on the perimeter). Slight improvement on D plus become a threat with the bounce during the offseason and he’s POY.
Colorado beats Oregon in Boulder on what was apparently a controversial foul call. I don’t know, because the Pac-12 TV deal sucks.
I saw it
“Controversial” is not really the correct phraseology. “Blatant hose job” would be more accurate.
I suppose turnabout is fair play for that WSU-Oregon game last year, but it sure would be nice to have a conference with some competent officiating for a change.
"We don't want our people to be preoccupied with seminude, crazy men jumping up and down who are chasing an inflated object," said Sheik Mohamed Osman Arus, head of operations for the Hizbul Islam insurgent group.
Just to recap for those w/o TV coverage
Oregon gets a (correctly called, FWIW) and-1 to tie with 7 seconds left, but Ashaolu borks the free throw. Nate Tomlinson brings the ball up the court, hesitates for some reason, then goes to the basket with just seconds remaining.
He essentially runs straight-on into E.J. Singler, who is backpedaling and straight up and down with his arms, bounces off of him, and then Singler blocks his shot without touching him. After this entire sequence is over, the referee calls a foul, apparently for the bounce-off (which was 100% initiated by Tomlinson). Colorado makes a free throw and wins.
Pretty ridiculous.
"We don't want our people to be preoccupied with seminude, crazy men jumping up and down who are chasing an inflated object," said Sheik Mohamed Osman Arus, head of operations for the Hizbul Islam insurgent group.
Is the Colorado home court thing real? I haven’t watched enough to be able to tell, but on paper I’m really not getting it.
Stats and some physiology studies indicate that it’s real but also causes problems on the road.

If I give them 5 points for altitude, I still don’t give them a perfect record over UW, WSU, Zona, OSU and UO. Not with that roster. I guess with a couple one-point wins in there (and it sounds like a huge break today), they’re probably on the good side of variance.
Of course, when we go up there with a thin roster we’re probably screwed, but it’s too early to worry about that right now.
I mean, they've now won two games on fouls called within the last five seconds
One of them could very easily have been a charge. The other clearly should have been a no-call. I doubt they get either call on a neutral floor.
There’s a lot of luck in their record.
"We don't want our people to be preoccupied with seminude, crazy men jumping up and down who are chasing an inflated object," said Sheik Mohamed Osman Arus, head of operations for the Hizbul Islam insurgent group.
I’m certainly worried about that game but we do have the experience of playing at Colorado last year in the NIT (where our season ended). I would like to think that Monty and the staff knows better what to expect.

Sorry, left over from Arizona game but want to make sure people see this..
This was the sequence at the end of the half that so infuriated the crowd and Monty… The foul on Smith is in a word ATROCIOUS. And that was the culmination of ten minutes of putrid officiating. Watching this confirmed what those of us who were there in person saw. By the way, you can clearly see me at the 1:40 mark right above Rebecca’s head in my gold shirt gesturing to the refs ;-) I was pissed…. ;-)
