MBB to take on Mountain schools:
BERKELEY – The Golden Bears (22-6, 12-3 Pac-12) seek to set a season-high winning streak of six games when they head to Salt Lake City to face Utah (5-21, 2-12). Cal tied a Haas Pavilion record with their 17th win, this season, in a 77-63 victory against Oregon State, but the Bears have suffered two of their three conference losses on the road.
Cal has reached the 22-win mark for the third time in head coach Mike Montgomery’s four years at the helm; a first in program history. Utah is in the middle of a seven-game skid that started on Jan. 26, but has earned each of its Pac-12 victories at home, this season.
The Bears will need to maintain their momentum down the stretch to stay in the hunt for the first Pac-12 regular-season title as they are currently tied with Washington for first place. Each team will finish the regular season with three road games, including a meeting with their respective rivals. Cal will continue to lean on its seniors Jorge Gutierrez and Harper Kamp as the regular-season race comes to a close.
Gutierrez ranks second on the team with 13.6 ppg and adds 5.3 rpg. He also leads the Bears in steals with 33, this season. Kamp has been the model of consistency and is the only player to have started all 28 of Cal’s games, this year. He puts in 10.8 ppg and 5.1 rpg.

Clarendon named Pac12 pow:
BERKELEY – California Golden Bear junior guard Layshia Clarendon was named Bank of the West Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 13-19, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. Clarendon averaged 24.5 points and 5.0 rebounds, while leading the Bears to two victories last week.
Clarendon (San Bernardino, Calif.) sunk five threes en route to a season-high 27 points in the 83-71 win over Oregon. She was 10-for-18 from the floor, eight of those attempts coming from three-point range. She also grabbed four boards and handed out five assists. In the 75-68 win over Oregon State, Clarendon made key free throws down the stretch, holding off a late surge from the Beavers, and was 9-for-13 from the charity stripe for the game, tallying 22 points. With the wins, Cal maintains a two-game lead for the No. 2 seed in the Pacific Life Pac-12 Basketball Tournament and also gave the Bears their fifth 20-win season in six years.

Softball crushes LSU:
HENDERSON, Nev. – With an impressive, six-run first inning, the No. 1/3 California softball team cruised to a 14-3 win against No. 24 LSU on Sunday morning.
Cal got incredible bat performances from Jace Williams, Breana Kostreba, Jolene Henderson and Frani Echavarria- all of whom homered with all but Henderson’s jack coming in the top of the fifth.
“Pac-12 versus the SEC is always an intense match-up,” Williams said. “The way we won was a perfect way to win a perfect weekend. This year’s team is incredibly talented and I know we all enjoy that ginormous target on our back. That’s the difference, this team enjoys and embraces pressure. I’m so stoked on this team and out great team win today!”
After the Tigers put three runs on the board in the bottom of the third, the Golden Bears tacked on two more runs in the fourth. It was not until the fifth inning, when Cal posted a lofty six runs in the top of the fifth to get the mercy victory.
Williams led the way with five RBI while Kostreba knocked in four.

Baseball swept Pacific:
No. 22-ranked Cal broke open a 3-3 game with six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning -highlighted by RBI hits from Derek Campbell, Darrel Matthews, Chadd Krist and Andrew Knapp – on the way to a 9-3 win over Pacific Sunday (Feb. 19) at Evans Diamond. With the victory, the Golden Bears swept the series from the Tigers, winning 9-1 on Friday in Berkeley and 6-3 Saturday in Stockton as well.
Junior right-hander Logan Scott (1-0, 1.0 inning, two hits, one run, one strikeout) got Sunday’s win for Cal despite giving up the tying run in the top of the eighth inning on Pacific’s Tyler Sullivan’s pinch-hit RBI single. But the Bears exploded for the six runs off of the Tigers’ relievers John Prato Matthews, Kyle Shaver and Paul Moeller. In the eighth, sophomore shortstop Campbell had the tie-breaking RBI single, junior left fielder Matthews had a two-run triple, Krist had an RBI double to left center field and Knapp had a two-run single to center field.
Krist’s double was his third of the season and the 49th of his career, moving him up to a tie for sixth on the Cal career list with Reid Neumann (1989-92), who was a left fielder on the Bears’ 1992 College World Series team. Krist also led Cal with three hits on the day (3-for-5), while Campbell and Matthews had two hits apiece. Krist led the Pac-10 last season with 27 doubles.

Cobbs named Pac12 pow:
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – California men’s basketball sophomore guard Justin Cobbs has been named the Bank of the West Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 13-19, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday, Feb. 20.
The second-year Golden Bear guided Cal to a home sweep of the Oregon schools, starting with a close 86-83 victory over the Ducks on Thursday. Cobbs posted a career-best 28 points on 13-for-19 shooting (.684) and dished out eight assists. He also tied a career-high for steals with four and grabbed three rebounds.
On Saturday, the Los Angeles native registered the second double-double of his collegiate career with a career-high 13 assists and 10 points in Cal’s 77-63 win over Oregon State. He also tied a career-best with five rebounds and went 4-for-4 from the foul line. Cobbs’ 13 assists against the Beavers were the most by a Cal player since Jason Kidd had 13 in 1994.
Over the two games, Cobbs averaged 19.0 points on 16-for-26 (.615) shooting, 10.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals. He also went 5-for-5 from the free-throw line

Mens swimming loses Big Meet:
STANFORD, Calif. — The Big Meet ended as it began: full-throated whistles punctuating the electric air, a spirited anchor leg from a charging challenger, a raucous crowd’s crescendo as two competing hands reached for final wall in sync. For three minutes each, two relays befit the Cal-Stanford rivalry at its best.
Unfortunately for the No. 6 Cal men’s swim team, the events in between on Saturday couldn’t match the excitement of the relays, and the Bears fell to No. 3 Stanford in their regular season finale, 146.5-96.5.
"We wanted to win," said junior Tom Shields. "I mean, a score’s a score. It doesn’t matter too much to us at this point. But we really, really, really wanted to win."

DC on WBB free throws:
In just one trip to the Northwest, the Cal women’s basketball team showed it can win games scoring from inside the paint or beyond the arc.
On Thursday, the squad faced an Oregon team led by former NBA coach Paul Westhead and won using a barrage of 3-pointers to take down the Ducks, 83-71.
Two days later, the Bears entered Corvallis, Ore., and went back to their standby of pounding the ball in the low post. They took only eight 3-pointers, hitting on five, and got to the free throw line 33 times, starting off the game 7-of-7 from the charity stripe. The result: a 75-68 victory over Oregon State at Gill Coliseum.

DC on mens golf:
A beautiful view was not enough to distract the Cal men’s golf team last week in Oahu, Hawaii. The No. 10 Bears defeated an 18-team field in the three-day John A. Burns Intercollegiate tournament that came down to the final day of the competition.
The victory, the Bears’ third of the season, made it two consecutive seasons in which the Bears have won the tournament. The win also tied a team record for the most tournament wins in a single season, a record that has been matched in the both the previous two years.
The Wednesday through Friday tournament, held at the Turtle Bay Resort on a course designed by golf legend Arnold Palmer, was full of tough competition. Participating in the tournament were numerous top teams including, No. 12 Texas A&M, No. 14 UNLV, No. 17 Duke and No. 25 New Mexico.
The Bears also bested Arizona after falling to the Wildcats by a single stroke just a week before. The Wildcats finished the Hawaii tournament in tenth place, scoring 40 strokes higher than the Bears.

The Palmer Course is better than the Fazio Course, but both are great.
I even won a bet with two locals who joined me on the first tee. I think I ended up winning 3 or 4 beers on top of lunch because they kept pressing.

Mens Gymnastics wins Big Meet:
The third time was not the charm for the Cal men’s gymnastics team against Stanford this season. The fourth and fifth times that the Bears matched up with their Bay Area foe, however, turned out pretty well. Cal wrapped up a five-meet season series with Stanford Saturday with a win in Palo Alto. The No. 5 Bears, coming off a win against the Cardinal Feb. 12, secured a second straight victory with a score of 344.900-343.600.
The Bears scored higher than the No. 4 Cardinal in four of the six events. Cal won the rings, floor, parallel bars and horizontal bar. They came up short on the pommel horse and vault.
The pommel horse loss was a rarity, as senior Glen Ishino placed only fourth in the event. The pommel horse is usually the U.S. men’s national team member’s strongest event.
Compared to the pommel horse loss, the victory on the floor event was a different kind of unexpected. The Cardinal are one of the best tumbling teams in the country and are led by the defending national champion in the event, Eddie Penev.

DC on lacrosse:
The Cal lacrosse team’s winning strategy of spreading the ball out became apparent in just the first minute of Sunday’s season opener when the squad scored a goal.
The Bears dominated their first MPSF match with draw control and ball possession to begin its conference season with an 18-6 victory over the St. Mary’s at Recreation Field in Moraga, Calif.
"By winning the first draw and moving around the ball as much as we could, we created extra opportunities for ourselves to get the ball down the field," said coach Ginger Miles. "With that first draw, we controlled the ball, which meant controlling the court and controlling the game."
Junior midfielder Melissa Humphrey led the Bears with nine points — three goals and six assists — to tie a Cal single-game record. Junior attacker Alexa Rozelle scored a game and career-high six goals, the most a Cal player has scored in a match since 2009.

DC on softball:
Another weekend, another sweep.
The No. 1 Cal softball team continued its pillaging of any and all comers Sunday in Henderson, Nev., with a resounding 14-3 victory over No. 24 LSU.
"I thought they were definitely one of the better teams we played this year," said pitcher Jolene Henderson. "Fortunately, we matched their intensity and produced well to get the victory."
The occasion for the contest was the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic, which brought together 18 Division I softball teams to face off against one another in a round-robin tournament style.
Sunday’s win came after another 4-0 showing from the Bears, who, thus far, have steamrolled every opponent that has stepped up to the plate. After a 2-0 win on Friday in which National Player of the Week Valerie Arioto launched two more bombs, Cal had a doubleheader against two California universities, surely exhausted from playing five games in seven days. The fatigue did not seem to be much of an issue, with the Bears disposing of San Jose State 7-0 and UC Riverside 10-0.
The Bears tacked on six runs in the top of the first inning Sunday, leaving the outcome of the contest in little doubt. Redshirt senior Jace Williams kicked off the scoring with a two-run double, and freshman infielder Breanna Kostreba immediately followed with a run-scoring single. After Williams scored on a wild pitch, Henderson finished off the inning’s scoring with a two-run home run, officially making the top of the first a crooked inning.

Dubs beat Clips:
Sick days: For those of us who are so blessed with a) a job and b) an employer who provides sick days, they’re golden. For those times when the workday is just too much to bear but you haven’t bothered to schedule a vacation, when the prospects of spending 8+ hours dealing with the pointy haired boss are overwhelming, they’re a life-saver, a chance to break from a routine long enough to regain some needed balance.
Occasionally, you can use them when you’re actually sick.
For those of us who have grown sick and tired of seeing Andris Biedrins provide a whole lot of nothing (and alas even I now just wonder who will offer us that broken toaster so we can be rid of the dead weight), his sick day provided exactly that break. Well, perhaps not for him, as apparently his illness is real I don’t actually wish ill health on him, but for the rest of us, it seemed to bring some new health to the team. We were rewarded with Ekpe Udoh’s first start and were, in return, rewarded with a win against a visiting Clippers team that is no longer the joke that they’ve been for, well, for about as long as our Warriors have been a joke.

Sactown Royalty talks about mistakes:
I like to think that fans of Sacramento Kings basketball have learned over the past six years to excuse losses and losing. We learned long ago that Rebuilding has a best friend named Defeat, and that they hang out all of the fricking time. Most of us accepted in 2007 that the team faced a dark future and needed to get worse in order to get better. So we hung on as the expensive pieces were pawned for basically nothing — Mike Bibby and Brad Miller literally got the team nothing in return — and the first set of building blocks (Kevin Martin, Quincy Douby, Spencer Hawes) were cast aside for newer, ‘better’ ones. We survived 2008-09, somehow. We came to terms with a long twilight, and prayed hard for a forthcoming dawn.
But one thing that’s proven more difficult is excusing mistakes. It popped up Sunday when Tyreke Evans made a bad foul that essentially cost the Kings the game against Cleveland. Evans rapped Kyrie Irving with Sacramento up one and just seconds left. Irving hit his free throws, and the Kings didn’t get a shot off on the other end. It was a bad, bad play from Tyreke.

Manny Era begins in Oakland
Manny Ramirez Officially Signs with Oakland A’s
In the worst kept secret of the offseason, Manny officially confirmed signing with the A’s to Pedro Gomez today. As for whether or not Manny is really a different person as Gomez claims in the video, I don’t really care. To me this move makes sense in quite a few ways. First and foremost, it costs the A’s nothing really other than $500 K which I think Lew Wolff burped up after his breakfast burrito this morning.

SSR talks Lakers-Blazers:
For this version of the Los Angeles Lakers, the run might be just about over. By that I don’t mean to suggest the Lakers don’t have a shot at a deep playoff run this season. They do. But when the Staples crowd gets another chance to watch the Lake Show in person, the team they see might be different – perhaps radically so, maybe just around the edges – than the one they watched on Monday night. If this was a swan song, it was a pretty lovely tune.
For one night at least, we got to see what Mitch Kupchak envisioned when he put this roster together. The blitzkrieg started with Andrew Bynum, as it always should. He had a direct hand in the Lakers’ first 10 points. After three straight baskets to give the Lakers a 6 to 3 lead they would never relinquish, Drew’s offensive rebounding led to consecutive second-chance hoops by Pau Gasol. Bynum’s physical dimensions and hunger for the ball were put to excellent effect, and it doesn’t even bother me that he only took seven shots (really nine, if you include free-throw possessions). In this instance his low shot total was less about guys not looking for him and more just taking advantage of the holes he opened in the Portland D. In large part because Drew was so assertive early on, the Lakers enjoyed clean passing lanes and open looks from beyond the arc the rest of the night. The big man got to feed early, so everyone else got their fill later on. That’s how it’s supposed to work.

Unthinkable! The Lakers' thrill is gone
We’re halfway through the NBA season. Do you know where their buzz is?
There used to be a time when all things Lakers mattered. When anything about the second-most love-to-hate/hate-to-love franchise in sports (the Yankees still rule in that department) was news in L.A. When the sports conversation on the court and off the court began and often ended with what was going on with the franchise.
Now, doesn’t it seem as though no one really cares anymore? Even the people I speak to all the time living inside Los Angeles are like that. It isn’t just the “trill”; the buzz is gone, too. Light-years from what it once was. The needle is no longer moving.
Irrelevant? Never the Lakers! This can’t be happening. Is this the end? Not of the team, but of its pertinence. Its appeal, its “it” factor, of them?

I’m not a Lakers fan and I think Stern was a total douchebagnozzle for negating the Paul trade. What a turd
Tony Gonzalez? University of California?
I think one thing we can all agree on is that if he or the owners truly wanted to exercise that sort of control over trade that NOH could make, they should have informed the Hornets long before they began negotiating.
At the very least, they should have nixed the trade before it became public. From a Lakers fan perspective, the part that hurt the most about the trade was the it hurt Lamar Odom’s feelings so much that he felt no longer welcome in LA. By nipping it in the bud before the trade went public, it would have negated the need to trade him for spare cash.
Also, in retrospect, the Clipper-Hornets trade looks really lopsided now… but of course you can’t really judge in hindsight.

I think as soon as the Clips trade was made, it was pretty obvious that the Hornets didn’t get as much as they would have if they traded CP3 to the Lakers.
Brave as a troll with a heart rare and true!
The thinking was that they would be able to retain Gordon, and that Minny would be so bad the draft pick would be valuable.
Now… Gordon’s hurt and Minny is a .500 team. Goes to show that those owners who cried foul really don’t have a clue what the hell they are doing.
If you told anyone that you could get Scola, Martin, Dragic and Odom for Chris Paul, you make that trade.
Los Angeles is officially BEAR TERRITORY.
i’m going to slightly disagree. the deal looks bad in hindsight, HOWEVER that largely assumes that the best thing for the hornets to do now is win. which i’m not quite convinced is true. if they tank, get 2 decent draft picks, and avoid long-term salary commitments, they may be in better long-term shape.

McC talks Melky:
Think back to what the front office was like after the Aaron Rowand deal was signed, sealed, and delivered. There were people who thought it was a good idea. If there wasn’t a yelp or a holler, there was at least an earnest fist-pump or three. Aaron Rowand, baby. This helps the team in some capacity. Good on us.
Which is to say, bigger isn’t necessarily better. Rowand was coming off a career year when he signed with the Giants. It was a bold move. Drinking the styrofoam cocktail that’s left in the container after you put some chicken on the grill: also a bold move. The Giants didn’t need a bold move like that this offseason.
The Giants could have made a big move just to make a big move. They tried that once.
Gary Matthews, Jr.! … dammit so much how about Juan Pierre? … you gotta be kidding me, okay Aaron Rowand! … YESSSSSS SCORRRRRRE AWLRIGHT FOLKS
/dunks ball through Nerf hoop on back of office door
I’m glad they didn’t try it again. It wouldn’t have been pretty. As such, maybe we should welcome Melky Cabrera with open arms. He didn’t come over on a seven-year deal. He wasn’t acquired for Gary Brown. He’s a one-year challenge player who was traded for a one-year challenge player. In theory, the Giants trading a bottom-rotation starter for a offensive-minded corner outfielder makes all sorts of sense.

Yeah, Real Madrid plays some great futball when they’re playing against anyone except Barca. The thing that absolutely drives me nuts about LaLiga are the ridiculous number of dives and idiots rolling on the field clutching their face.

TrueBlueLA talks Jamey Wright:
Wright has also been durable since joining the bullpen, tied for Matt Guerrier for the third most relief innings in baseball from 2008-2011. What a difference five years of age and outperforming ones peripherals make, as Wright (4.25 ERA, 4.35 FIP, 4.25 xFIP during the last four years) is on his second consecutive minor league contract while Guerrier (3.23 ERA, 4.38 FIP, 4.25 xFIP from 2007-2010) cashed in to the tune of three years and $12 million last year.
Trivia
Wright allowed 13 unearned runs in 2009, setting a Royals record for a reliever, the highest number of unearned runs allowed by a major league reliever since Tony Castillo allowed 14 for the Chicago White Sox in 1997.
Contract Status
Jamey Wright signed a minor-league contract with an invitation to big league camp in spring training, with a reported out clause at some point in March per Tony Jackson of ESPN LA, meaning of Wright isn’t added to the active roster by the specified date in his contract he can opt to become a free agent.

Sharks are in Ohio!
Tough test for the…
Big game tonight with…
Alright, Columbus sucks and everyone knows it. Last in the West, grasping at straws. Looking to trade anyone with a heartbeat. Rick Nash and Jeff Carter on the block, organization in shambles.
The perfect slump-buster.
Granted, the Sharks aren’t the best of the best right now, but they’re still sitting in third in the West… precarious as that spot might be. The Phoenix Coyotes are hot on their tails, just two points behind after going 8-1-1 in their last ten. However, the Sharks do still hold two games in hand on Phoenix (and Los Angeles, who can’t score a goal to save their lives), and the current streaks that both San Jose and Phoenix are on are unlikely to continue for much longer.
While I do admit that Phoenix is a better team than I originally gave them credit for (they looked on the fast track to a league-last finish after they lost 6-3 against the Sharks in San Jose’s home opener), assuming that they’ll continue to earn points in 90% of their games is ridiculous. And even if you’re the most pessimistic of Sharks fans, assuming that the Sharks will continue to drop games after playing like an very good team much of the season is unrealistic as well.

I watched just on Monday, Catch-22. It’s the first (and likely to be the only) time I’ve watched the movie.
“Dark comedy” doesn’t do it justice in describing its outlook. Unless, by dark, one means inky stillness with overtones of impending doom. I found the movie to be extremely gloomy, grim, and depressing on many levels.

20th anniv of Homer at the Bat:
On Feb. 20, 1992, more American homes tuned into The Simpsons than they did The Cosby Show or the Winter Olympics from Albertville, France. A foul-mouthed cartoon on a fourth-place network bested the Huxtables and the world’s best amateur athletes. Fox over NBC and CBS—its first-ever victory in prime time. New over old.
Why the shift? Well, the Olympic programming that night featured no marquee events, and Cosby was just two months away from ending its eight-season run. Meanwhile, The Simpsons, airing just its 52nd episode out of 500 (and counting), had put forth its most ambitious effort to date, an episode called “Homer at the Bat.” Months of work went into corralling nine baseball players, a cross-section of young stars and established veterans, to guest-star as members of a rec-league softball team.
Sam Simon, the co-creator of The Simpsons, originally pitched the idea, and it was put into words by John Swartzwelder, a charter member of the show’s writing staff, who would eventually pen 59 episodes, more than anyone else. On a staff full of fantasy baseball junkies, Swartzwelder was the über-geek, a fanatic who had rented out stadiums for hours at a time so he and his close friends could play ball. (Years after Swartzwelder’s departure from the show, it’s easy to see his influence endures. During the episode’s roundtable DVD commentary, the word “Swartzweldian” is used with a deference and awe usually reserved for long-dead Nobel Laureates.)

so ozzie smith was like hey i should go to the springfield mystery spot because i enjoy absorbing local culture because all professional athletes respect all local cultures and want to become worldly so of course he checked out the tire fire and was sure to bring along his camera then he went to the springfield mystery spot which is actually mysterious and a portal to another weird dimension unlike the santa cruz mystery spot which is just a house built on a slope so your brain messes up because you try to think about what direction gravity is acting in and it gets confused but really nothing amazing is happening however in the springfield mystery spot apparently you can be sucked into a vortex and this is exactly what happened to ozzie smith and then the aforementioned occurred directly after this.

I do remember that they’ve revamped Cafe Durant so I could imagine it being a legit happy hour spot.

yeah, it’s a lot of fun. good drunk food (nachos, burritos) and they have a beer pong table in the back. only downsides are it’s pretty small and there is only 1 set of taps – can imagine it being sloowwwwwww during HH.
"#caltrollgang" - RB
oh, so you know how BTC had like 30ish taps so you could probably always get some kind of beer if you got a bartender’s attention? at durant there are only 4 taps (PBR, coors, lagunitas, and fat tire). so i can imagine a pretty significant backlog during happy hour if it’s crowded.
"#caltrollgang" - RB
Yeah, that makes sense. Though I’d imagine that it won’t attract crowds nearly as large as the BTC crowds
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
i’m doing a terrible job explaining this, but durant does actually have a “beat the clock” deal where pitchers start at $5 and increase. so i’ve heard it is absolutely packed during friday afternoons.

Supreme Court to hear case about using race in college admissions
In a potentially momentous decision, the Supreme Court will once again confront the issue of race in university admissions in a case brought by a white student denied a spot at the flagship campus of the University of Texas.
The court said Tuesday it will return to the issue of affirmative action in higher education for the first time since its 2003 decision endorsing the use of race as a factor in freshmen admissions. This time around, a more conservative court is being asked to jettison that ruling and outlaw affirmative action in the university setting.

Did anyone watch American Experience show on Clinton last night? Was really interesting and well done… but man, it was also really harsh on him, which suggests to me part 2 will be a love fest, except they hadn’t yet covered “that woman, miss lewinsky” yet…
I’m partial to all of these just for the “time capsule” nature of them, but I thought this was really good. It left off with the Gingrich and the GOP winning the house and senate for the first time in forever and Clinton wondering where his presidency was going.
Had a really powerful part on our lack of leadership in Rwanda. It was honestly very disturbing, especially the images they used, where in one you could clearly see someone getting macheted in the background… (you couldn’t see the contact, but you saw the person fall then the machete going to work, it was awful and I am surprised they included that).
Looking forward to tonight’s.

Sunday’s game against Cal is SOLD OUT! The men’s basketball team is asking all fans in attendance to wear white in an effort to WHITEOUT the Coors Events Center.
To help bring the atmosphere of the Coors Events Center to both the Staples Center and the Galen Center, 50 of the most loyal CU Basketball student season ticket holders (according to the Student Loyalty Program) will be joining Coach Boyle & Coach Lappe in Los Angeles to cheer on the CU men’s and women’s basketball teams from March 7-10! CU Athletics will be providing flight, hotel, and tickets to both the Men’s and Women’s tournament games!

2. Sunglasses in the Store – Look, you aren’t famous. I know this. You know this. I know this because you are in my Starbucks and famous people do not find their way to an obscure corner of Homewood, AL to order lattes. You know this because you know that you are not famous. So because we’ve established that the paparazzi are not stalking you and I highly doubt you are either in the witness protection program or on the run from the law, you can take off your freaking sunglasses when you walk inside. Number one, you might actually be able to see the menu to order correctly, and number two, you won’t look like a huge moron. So just leave the glasses on your head or in the car. I promise your sensitive eyes will survive.

If they wanted to name the sizes for the number of ounces in Italian, like dodici, sedici, venti, then at least that would be consistent. Short, medium, tall would have made sense. Pequeño, medio, grande would have made sense for Spanish.
But using Tall to mean Small, Large (in Spanish) for Medium, and 20 in Italian for Large is just stupid.

Successful troll is successful
Davonte’ Neal didn’t show up for his own news conference Wednesday to announce his decision between Arizona, Notre Dame, Arkansas and North Carolina.
The nation’s eighth-ranked player from Chaparral High in Scottsdale, Ariz., left 600 at Kyrene de la Esperanza Elementary — his old school — in the lurch.
And, by the way, national signing day was three weeks ago. Yes, each year the excesses of recruiting and the behavior the hype inspires hit us squarely between the eyes.
There’s this from the Arizona Daily Star:
The issue, apparently, is a power struggle between Neal and his father, Luke. Luke Neal has been pro-Notre Dame in recent weeks, while Davonte has been leaning toward the UA.
Wildcats coach Rich Rodriguez made recruiting Neal a priority shortly after he was hired Nov. 21 as Mike Stoops’ permanent replacement. Rodriguez hired Charlie Ragle, Neal’s coach at Chaparral, as Arizona’s new liaison to in-state high schools. The Wildcats then signed two Chaparral players, linebacker Cody Ippolito and defensive end Dylan Cozens, with hopes Neal would follow.
The solution here is simple. Someone should ask Neal where he wants to go to school. Then Neal should send his letter of intent there. End of story.
This is Neal’s decision. Why? He’s the only one who’s going to college. He’s the only one living with the decision.
And, by the way, he’s the one who earned the free ride.

they’ve done a study and the most successful teams touch each other them most (shut up, pervs)
"#caltrollgang" - RB
They found that the more touching a team engaged in, the better they played. To be sure there weren’t extraneous variables affecting the results, the researchers controlled for player salary (to ensure that better, highly paid players weren’t just touching more), preseason expectation (to ensure that teams with high expectations weren’t simply more demonstrative) and early season performance (to ensure that better-playing teams weren’t touching more as a result of their success).
None of those factors explained the touch-success connection. Instead, touch was closely linked with more cooperative play, like passing the ball to another teammate instead of taking an ill-advised shot.

In an effort to improve their man-to-man coverage ability, the Kansas City Chiefs reached agreement with former Oakland Raiders cornerback Stanford Routt, the team announced Monday.
Routt will receive $6.5 million in guarantees and will make $11 million this season as part of a three-year deal, a source said. The Raiders released him after the season from a three-year, $31.5 million deal that paid him $10 million in 2011

Interesting article on race in sports
Starts with, but goes beyong Linsanity
Perhaps the worst part of this strain of more practiced and subtle racism is that it goes back so many decades, and seems to have died down … well, not at all. George Will was one of the first people to make me truly aware of it when he spoke in Ken Burns’ 1994 “Baseball” documentary about the perceptions of Willie Mays in the 1950s.
Willie Mays was not the first black ballplayer, but he had his own barrier to break through — a kind of gentle, good-natured racism, but racism nonetheless. If you remember when he came up, people would say, “Oh, what an instinctive ballplayer he is. What a natural ballplayer he is. What childlike enthusiasm he has!” Well, thirty years on, we can hear with our better-trained ears, the racism in that. [Was Mays] wonderfully gifted? Yes. Great natural ballplayer? Yes. But nobody — nobody — got to the major leagues on natural gifts without an awful lot of refining work.
[Mays] was an instinctive ballplayer, but he was also a tremendously smart ballplayer. As a rookie, he’d get to second base, watch two batters go up to the plate, and he’d go back to the dugout, having stolen the signs and decoded the sequence. He’d know the indicator signs from the other signs. Natural ballplayer? Sure. Hardest-working ballplayer you ever saw.More than 60 years after Mays broke into the big leagues, can we still hear it with our better-trained ears? Did we really ever?
Go ask Cam Newton, who underwent a baseless character assassination before the 2011 NFL draft at the hands of several analysts. Go ask Ichiro Suzuki, who’s been the target of a not-so subtle Seattle media lynch mob for years because he doesn’t make more of an effort to speak English and connect with certain local writers and radio guys. Or, at least that’s what certain local writers and radio guys say, by way of excuse, when they call Suzuki a selfish, “me-first” player who needs to walk more and should hit wherever the heck the manager tells him to. Who does he think he is, anyway?
In cases like these, it’s generally good to assume that what people say, and what they actually mean, are very different things.
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
because he doesn’t make more of an effort to speak English
This is not racist at all. This is a perfectly understandable reaction. Living in a foreign country and not making the effort to learn the predominant language of that country is rude. Honestly if an American does this we’re called ugly Americans.
I learned frickin’ Chichewa for god’s sakes… ;-)
Exactly. Nobody says you have to be great at your adopted language, but you should try!
Tony Gonzalez? University of California?
Yeah, I’m not sure I buy the argument that the Ichiro complaints are racially based. The dude keeps slapping singles when by most accounts he has the ability to hit home runs. That seems selfish and hurts the team.

The world is full of ex-patriots who don’t speak the local language. I was one of them for 6 years, aside from a token amount of Dutch. If one is not there specifically to interact with the locals – which you were in Africa – it’s not the end of the of the world.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.
You sound like a lot of the charming Brits I ran into in Africa, Southeast Asia, etc…
If one is not there specifically to interact with the locals – which you were in Africa – it’s not the end of the of the world.
the threshold isn’t whether or not it’s the end of the world. No one says you have to be fluent. I’m surprised this is so hard to grasp.
It’s not a question of whether it’s hard to grasp. I understand your point, but you aren’t the global arbiter of how to behave.
My specific experience in Holland was that even if you tried to speak Dutch to the local kids, they weren’t interested in interacting with foreigners. The adults appreciated an effort at token Dutch, but in my day to day life, it really wasn’t necessary.
I’ve heard similar stories about locals being put off even if you try and speak the language from people who were expats in Asia.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.
Hmm… My two cents, speaking french in Paris was sometimes appreciated, sometimes necessary, and sometimes strongly discouraged.
Am I known as Cugel the Clever for nothing?
I think you’re finding examples to justify your behavior. Not learning the language of the place you are living is all kinds of wrong. I am not sure why you insist, on this topic, of using straw man veiled insults such “You are not the global arbiter of how to behave.” I never said i was. I am pretty sure, however, you are in the minority on this.
If you thought the insult was veiled, I must have been doing it wrong ;)
This is not a question of finding examples to justify my behavior – I’m relaying my experience, nothing more, nothing less.
No matter how many times you make a normative statement:
Not learning the language of the place you are living is all kinds of wrong.
That doesn’t mean it is in fact universally true.
I’m not advocating that no-one ever learn a foreign language ever. What I am saying is that in fact there are many ex-patriot communities whose members do not spend their lives speaking the local language or being fully engaged in the local culture, and that there are plenty of perfectly valid reasons for doing that: education, religion, cultural commonality, ease of daily life. It does not always make sense to fully engage in a locality when you know you aren’t going to be there for more than a defined period of time.
Does that mean that I don’t roll my eyes at people, like the pasty old Brits who live in Santa Monica for 30 plus years but still use “home” to refer to whatever crappy southern English town they come from? Of course I roll my eyes at that.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.
I’ve heard similar stories about locals being put off even if you try and speak the language from people who were expats in Asia.
That doesn’t sound like “your” experience. And I have little doubt those expats used that as a justification for not learning the language because it “put off” the locals.. I mean, not my fault I didn’t learn the language, if only the locals had been nicer about it…
I will actually give you that The Netherlands is a special case because they tend to speak proper broadcasting English (American) better than we do.
Learning the local language never hurts. It is almost always appreciated that you at least made the attempt.
We simply disagree on this.
I will actually give you that The Netherlands is a special case
Nice of you to concede that the circumstances for the under-11 set might be different, even if only in one country.

Oh for pete’s sake. You lumped me in with a class of British ex-pats in a way that was supposed to be distinctly unflattering. Since you don’t know me, I feel perfectly comfortable saying that assessment shows that you don’t know what you’re talking about.
Going back to Ichiro as a selective quote that was no longer part of the flow is exactly the sort of penny-ante nitpicking that you seem to like to put forth as an argument. I really ought to know better than to even engage, but you’re not the only argumentative person who hates to be told he’s wrong on this pointless slapfight.

Oh for pete’s sake. Living in a country for 6 years and not learning the language of the natives is unflattering.
The point of the quote is you had no problem commenting on something about which you didn’t know all the details, so calling someone else out for doing the same thing is rather disingenuous.
Keep digging in your heels tho and try to explain how living in a country for 6 years and not learning the native language is a good thing.
What if the native language is found to cause cancer?

Well, at least we’re clear that neither of us were in possession of the full details of the original story.
As for living in Holland for 6 years and only speaking enough Dutch for minor daily interactions… I was a child, my family never intended to stay in the country, educating me in the Dutch system would have been pointless. If you can’t understand that, because it doesn’t align to your overseas experience, then that’s not really my problem.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.
Hey, if it makes you feel any better, my father spoke fluent Dutch because he managed a plant with a couple hundred employees and wanted to make sure he could talk to everyone who wasn’t a white collar type…. as well as a smattering of German and French for their satellite offices. He drew the line at Italian though, much as he enjoyed the site visits.
In other words, an appropriate degree of fluency for his daily life.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.

I used to be very dismissive of people who live places and don’t learn the language – however -
1. Cantonese is HARD. Plus a good portion of people in Hong Kong speak English. Especially those that you’d be dealing with as an expat. So I can understand being in HK and not learning Chinese.
2. There’s a good number of expats at my current company – the default language in our office is English, unless the meeting is attended by 100% Chinese speakers. Everyone needs to know English to work here. Chinese is not a requirement – in terms of general job baseline requirements (it is, required for 95% of the jobs though). My friend has lived here for 6 years, has a driver who understands english, has an entire team of people who work for him who speak, write and read english at a fluent or close to fluent level. As a senior executive, he doesn’t really have the time to sit in Chinese classes. He has learned enough transactional chinese (directions, taxi Chinese) but the way his life is structured, learning Chinese would be very very very hard.
exactly… and has that ever stopped a DBD argument? you’re going to really cut down on your traffic if you enforce that impossible standard!
It’s as if he doesn’t want the page hits….
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.

Maybe he’s tried and struggles with it, and is embarrassed to insult Americans by speaking English badly. Maybe he had someone translate what the local press says about him, and decided that he didn’t see any point in talking to those racist assholes. (Hypothetical opinion, not mine). Or perhaps he just doesn’t give a shit because he’s only here for a short while and he doesn’t really need to speak English to get by.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.
The columnist is saying it’s not about Ichiro not making an effort to speak English, it’s that reporters are using that as an excuse to criticize him, when the real issue is that they are racist against him. Which seems ludicrous.

Okay, I’m sure it’s possible some people are racist against him, but Ichiro is a well-loved sports icon in Seattle, and without any actual, you know, evidence that these local writers have a racial axe to grind, it seems like a slanderous accusation to make.

he’s been here for 10+ years. By now I would expect for him to speak the language.
You can tell this is someone whose career I have followed closely.
I have to say I don’t really care if someone doesn’t speak English, I just don’t have much sympathy if they have trouble navigating life as a result. He’s probably able to delegate that sort of thing, so what’s the diff?

America should see the game video from the Knicks’ MSG network in which cameras focused on a homemade sign that showed Lin’s face above a fortune cookie with the words, "The Knicks Good Fortune.’’
This part seems overly sensitive to me. I doubt the fan meant any offense, and really what’s offensive about being called fortunate to be on your team?

are we gonna get another “black korea” song?
and down in dallas…
http://newamericamedia.org/2012/02/black-korean-tensions-flare-in-dallas.php
SAN FRANCISCO –Dallas resident Thomas Park recently appeared on a local African American radio show to offer an apology. The 40-year-old Korean émigré had been involved in a December altercation with a customer at his gas station in a largely black Dallas neighborhood.
The fallout from that incident has since engulfed the two communities.
The dispute began when Jeffrey Muhammad, a leader in the local Nation of Islam chapter, requested that Park waive a $5 minimum for a debit card transaction. Park refused, at which point the two reportedly exchanged racial epithets.
Muhammad later launched a protest campaign called "Don’t Stop Don’t Shop" targeting Park. The protest has now entered its second month, drawing support from a local city council member, as well as members of the NAACP and the Nation of Islam. Organizers say they are determined to drive Park out of the neighborhood.
"I pay my taxes. I work hard to feed my family," Park later told the Dallas Morning News. "I’m not a racist. I’m just trying to follow the American Dream."
Doing so meant setting up shop in a traditionally African American neighborhood long besieged by joblessness and economic blight. It’s a pattern repeated by Korean American business owners across the country, from New York’s Flushing Meadows to Oakland and Los Angeles, where in 1992 riots erupted that have left an enduring scar on the Korean American psyche.
We dont happen to have awesome phtoos of Koreans with rifles from those riots, do we/

Wild speculation: Peyton Manning in ESPN’s Monday Night Football chair this season
It takes a few leaps to get there, but I guess a person could, if they really wanted to, envision a scenario where Peyton Manning sits in the ESPN booth to call “Monday Night Football” games in 2012.
There are less likely things. Like ESPN offering that spot to Christian Slater, for example, or opting to have Fran Drescher sing the play-by-play for four quarters.
Bob Raismann of the New York Daily News believes there’s a real chance that Manning is working Monday nights with Jon Gruden and Mike Tirico. He believes it enough, in fact, that he devoted half of a column to the idea over the weekend. He even suggests at one point that ESPN removed Ron Jaworski from the booth to open up a spot for Peyton.
Keeping that third seat open, especially when the guys filling the other two seats ain’t exactly mega stars, was a shrewd move by ESPN suits — a move with foresight.
A move that could bring Manning into living rooms across the country when NFL football is played on Monday night.

By the way, our very own coach just used that word
“For us, a California school, I think that is significant,” Montgomery said. “What you’re trying to do is get wins at this point. This is a (road) game not everyone is going to get. This game augurs well.”

Feel the hate.
The addition of Manny Ramirez to the A’s organization is sure to stir up controversy given Manny’s flamboyant attitude, performance-enhancing past and propensity for taking potty breaks on the field. But, when it’s all said and done, will he go down as one of the most hated sports figures in the Bay Area?
If he does, he’ll join some pretty illustrious company, ranging from quarterbacks to coaches to closers and even owners. The Chronicle Sports Desk put its collective brains together to come up with some of the most hated sports figures in the storied history of the Bay (presented here in no particular order).
Cal has two spots on the list
Todd Bozeman and Tom Holmoe.
Can’t argue.

Sources: Lakers like Beasley
http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/37357/lakers-like-beasley
While we may not see many trades occur before the week of the March 15 deadline, discussions are taking place in front offices throughout the league.
Here’s some of the scuttlebutt I’ve heard:
The Lakers’ front office knows Kobe Bryant is looking for it to improve the roster, and GM Mitch Kupchak has been working the phones. He’s spoken to Minnesota about Michael Beasley, and sources say the Lakers are intrigued by the Timberwolves’ small forward. The Lakers were actually in discussions with Minnesota about a potential trade for Beasley before the season started. If they would have been able to pull off the deal for Chris Paul, there is a good chance that a trade for Beasley would have followed.
It’s not clear what the Lakers would give Minnesota for Beasley (if indeed the talks get that far), but the Lakers could absorb Beasley into their $8.9 million trade exception while giving up a draft pick or cash. I’m told the teams have not spoken about Pau Gasol since the preseason. Minnesota is looking to move Beasley, who they feel has matured very little (if at all) since he’s been there, according to sources. The Lakers believe they can handle a player like Beasley because of their winning culture and the leadership of Bryant.
Peter O'Malley reportedly out as bidder for Dodgers
http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-0222-dodgers-omalley-20120222,0,6167250.story
Peter O’Malley has withdrawn his bid to buy the Dodgers, two people familiar with the sale process said Tuesday.
The decision means the O’Malley family will not reclaim the stewardship of the team it owned for nearly half a century, a span during which the Dodgers won all six of their World Series championships.
O’Malley declined to comment. The people who confirmed the decision were not authorized to discuss it publicly.
Backed in part by the South Korean conglomerate E-Land, O’Malley was one of 11 bidders to survive the first cut. Blackstone Advisory Partners, the investment bank handling the Dodgers sale for owner Frank McCourt, has asked the remaining bidders to submit a new offer this week.
However, according to one of the people, O’Malley was concerned he might not win the bidding even if he made the highest offer.
Damn…that sucks. I thought he would’ve been good. Back to the Dodgers’ ways.

GM to Gingrich: You can put a gun rack in a Volt
GM spokesman Selim Bingol responded to Gingrich in a new GM blog: “Newt Gingrich has taken up saying that ‘You can’t put a gun rack on a Volt.’ That’s like saying ‘You can’t put training wheels on a Harley.’ Actually, you can. But the real question is ‘Why would you?’ In both examples: It looks weird. It doesn’t work very well, and, there are better places for gun racks and training wheels — pickup trucks and little Schwinns, respectively.”
Bingol added: “Seriously, when is the last time you saw a gun rack in ANY sedan?”
GM sells hundreds of thousands of trucks annually, and many owners install gun racks.
One Volt owner took to YouTube to demonstrate that it is possible to install a gun rack.
Also, I didn’t realize a Volt was an Umerican car. Why does Newt hat Umerica?
