Shorthanded Bears Can't Rally Past Wildcats, Fall 78-74
Well, darn.
It could have been one of the more memorable comebacks in recent history.
Instead, it's yet another what-might-have-been.
There's not a lot of elegant prose to describe how lousy it feels to lose an early 13-point lead and get knocked out of 1st place in the process.
This is your post-game thread.

Sadly, all of SBN appeared to be down for huge chunks of tonight. I am not pleased, but I do not know what can be accomplished.

Reffing: I don't think it helped either team more than the other overall, but I did have this thought:
Sometimes you’ll hear announcers praise the refs for calling fouls and ‘controlling the game.’ I think these games that are called tight actually inflame tensions. When players are constantly frustrated with iffy calls, when coaches are yelling and gesticulating, when the crowd is worked into a frenzy by too many calls . . . that’s the type of environment that leads to players overreacting like Jorge did, leads to more anger, leads to bad things happening.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Well, it seemed pretty lopsided in the 1st half for Arizona and pretty even in the 2nd half, so on balance I’d say it helped the Wildcats.

…so? That’s not indicative of anything. If Arizona actually committed more than 11 fair fouls and we committed fewer than 11 fouls, then that’s not fair.
That way of looking at it is like the same BS our media uses to be “balanced”.

I’m just not convinced they called the game unfairly. I think they called it BADLY, in that they called every single possible foul along with another 10. But I don’t think they called bad fouls against us and DIDN’T call bad fouls against Arizona too.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
agreed
but find the call against Gut for his 3rd. Gut stood there. Lavendar behind him, reaches around and slaps his pecker and raises his arms. Gut never moved, despite receiving a love tap where it counts. Ref imagined something.
I’m actually really surprised Miller didn’t tell his players to drive wrecklessly into Gut to get his 4th.
That’s a reasonable enough point of view. I think it wasn’t too bad for most of the half, but the last several minutes there were some really bad calls and they almost all went Arizona’s way.
My main point was that you can’t just look at the number of fouls and say it was fair based on that, because that’s meaningless.

I thought it made a huge difference in the stretch where they went like 14-17. A bunch of our guys got in the danger zone, foul-wise, and lost their defensive aggression. I suppose you just need to keep challenging in those spots, but it’s tough when you’re staring at a third foul with 30 min left in the game.
I very rarely complain about officiating, so I think I’m able to be objective. I thought it made a huge difference to the outcome. If nothing else, the deeper team is always going to be helped by a lot of foul trouble.
Also, beyond the guys with two fouls (I think at one point there were around 8 mins left and we had three on the floor with two), I think we were trying to adjust to the way the game was being officiated, and all of a sudden they were getting open looks. I just hate, hate, hate when any basketball game is officiated that way, but especially when I’m rooting for a good, but shallow defensive team.
Yes. There is a reasonable argument that if Solo had played every game this year, we’d have at least three more wins. It sucks.
Yup

and if Monty could recruit some players so we didn’t have Smith throwing the ball away constantly, or 5 other scholarships enjoying the game from the high roller ($) seats opposite Larry Scott, et al….
i will say this. Marcus Johnson was having a great time tonight yelling Thurmination, Thurminator, etc. It was one of the better Pac12 games this year!
Agreed.
The announcers weren’t biased or ignorant and were having a jolly good time. I liked it.
They did have an annoying habit of agreeing with every single call the refs made though.

Jorge's third was redonkulous (no offense, Redonk).
He went out again which could have been the difference.
I'd like to smell the Roses before I die.
I am so fucking livid at the officiating I have to chime in on this…
Arizona shot 29 free throws to our 16 (sure the made barely half).
The refs TOTALLY took over the game in the first half. TOTALLY. There were some calls that just completely changed the complexion of the game. As others have said, you can’t say “they called an even # of fouls on each team so they must have been fair” because as we all know it’s when those calls are made, what impact they have etc… It was simply ATROCIOUS. I have been going to Cal games for a long time and i have NEVER, I mean NEVER EVER heard the crowd boo the officials like they did at the end of the half.
I talked with Larry Scott at half time and he seemed embarrasses by them. If he can’t fix he officiating he needs to look for another job. This continues to be an absolute embarrassment for the PAC 12.
I talked with Larry Scott at half time

well, maybe you didn't see these two plays
- Kravish standing looking at the ball come down the court. Choi pushed him hard in the back with both hands. No call. It was right in front of the ref.
- Smith and an AZ player fall together out of bounds. Smith gets up first with the AZ player still on the ground. The AZ player grabs his ankle from the ground, trying to grab/trip Smith. No call.
Of course there were other bad calls/no calls, but those were probably visible from TV. These other two non-calls were probably not visible on TV.
The point is, that both were CLEARLY intentional.
Like I said in the other thread...
Most coaches would’ve dove out of the way and just let Jorge eat shit and stick their legs out defensively while cussing. Yeah. On the other hand, Sean Miller actively attempted to break Jorge’s fall. I may be giving him too much credit, but respect to him.

moral of the story
You’re not going to win many games where you let your opponent have a stretch where they make 19 of 23 shots. Much respect for getting back into the game in the second half.
It’s too early to call anything a must-win, but chances are we’re going to feel that one on Selection Sunday. Some of the worst officiating I can imagine, but it’s hard to ignore the fact we let Fogg get open behind screens way too many times, including on that critical sequence with 2 mins left — and how they made a few super-athletic plays to deny us even getting a shot on the rim in the last couple minutes.
Of longer term concern is the fact that as time goes on, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the way Smitty is playing he is a huge liability. So that leaves like 5 1/2 guys Monty can trust. If we need a run in the P12 tournament…and I’m starting to fear we will, this does no bode well at all.
Yeah, Smith’s play was sadly not a positive tonight. Even when he made a free throw, he negated it by stepping over the line. :-/

Bears doomed by bad fouls, bad turnovers, and giving up too many wide open looks.
Thurman had a great game again with great contributions when he was on the floor. Kamp and Jorge showed great leadership.
Arizona won the last few minutes (after we tied it) on their superior athleticism, unfortunately.
This game would have been much different if the refs weren’t so keen on calling fouls on both sides.
by LEastCoastBears on Feb 2, 2012 10:29 PM PST reply actions
the most inconsistent part of the reffing was really that sequence at the end of the half
where they didn’t call a foul on Arizona (which was arguably fine) but then called a cheap one on us.
The double foul that was the 3rd on Jorge was bad but in some way understandable. Jorge needs to keep his emotion in check more and not be baited into a foul like that.
by LEastCoastBears on Feb 2, 2012 10:31 PM PST up reply actions
The foul wasn’t for anything they did, though. If you look at the actual play there wasn’t a foul. It must have been for jawing at each other. Which he shouldn’t have been doing.

They explained it.
The two were getting very physical and fouls were called on both of them to scare them into submission. We just only noticed Jorge’s because he had to go to the bench.
Right, but neither of them were actually in the act of committing a foul when they were whistled.

Thurman is growing by leaps and bounds, so it’s disturbing to see Smith regress. Who’s the next guard on the bench? Powers? Putting him in would require Gut and Cobbs to run the point, but couldn’t we do that for a few minutes at a time?

Smith did suffer that concussion that knocked him out a few games. May need some more time for him to get back to form.
I thought Powers is more of a SF than a guard, especially running the point. It would be welcoming to see Emerson Murray step up his game, the same way that Robert Thurman has.

He’s listed as a guard, but you’re right, he’s not a PG, that’s why I said:
Putting him in would require Gut and Cobbs to run the point
But since Gutierrez and Cobbs can both run the point, you can let Powers play shooting guard and spell one of them.

by atomsareenough on Feb 2, 2012 10:45 PM PST up reply actions
In my observation the offense bogs down noticeably with either Powers or Emerson in the game, and both are sub-standard defensively. I think they have to improve significantly in both areas before you can comfortably say you’re not giving up a ton of equity in games with a razor thin margin.
I do see the bench playing more minutes in the next two, because we really have no choice. Hopefully it’s also because we have big leads.
If we can get by just playing them a minute here and a minute there, just to get the starters a blow, even that could be useful. Hell, we’re trotting out Robert Thurman for extended minutes at this point. He’s responded well and impressed the hell out of me, but he’s a walk-on. The other guys were recruited, scholarship players. Time to see what they can do.

I see that point, but I also hate the idea of wasted possessions in close games. It’s tough, because obviously you’re going to see ill effects at the end of games and over the long haul if you keep playing your starters like this. I’m really not sure. I’m just pointing out that I don’t think they’re very good, so it’s not as easy as plugging them in for a minute or two because they won’t do any damage. It’s a question of where you want to take your damage, until you recruit more depth and/or keep your players eligible.
I think if Cal wasn’t on the bubble for a tournament bid, maybe if they were developing like last year, he’d give his bench more run. But we can’t afford any slip ups.

You know, it’s kind of sad. I don’t think the Pac-12 is nearly as bad as it was at the beginning of the season. We’re a league full of young teams. Arizona is improving. UCLA is improving. Colorado and Oregon seem to be getting better by the week. We’re not the same group of teams that looked so pathetic back during non-conference play. Yet our lack of achievements in December/January is going to really hurt us on Selection Sunday.

auto bid for the tourney should go to regular season winner. But they want to make money, and need something to play for to make it interesting to the coaches, players, and fans. So they throw away the regular season, and play for 4 days, hoping to get more $.
I heard that Scott was thinking of moving the tournament to Vegas to make more money, but then Taiwan is going to bid $1B dollars to host it, so…..
Sure, but young and talented teams develop more. And I think we’ve got a lot of talent. We’ve got a LOT more talent than say, the Colonial or the A-10 or some of the mid-major conferences we’ve been compared to. Especially at places like Arizona and Washington. That talent is coming together pretty quickly.

AU and UW will split the reg season and tourney titles and get NCAA bids.

Maybe Arizona will win the conference tourney. They’re still fairly young though and they’re playing without Parrom, so that makes things difficult. We’ll see though, I wouldn’t rule it out. I’d sure love to get revenge on those bastards in the conference tourney.

The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Well, what do you think we need to do overall in conference play to feel comfortable about a tourney bid? 14-4 (24-7 overall)? We’re already 7-3, so that means going 7-1 over our last 8 games. 6-2 at the very least to be 13-5 (which is 23-8 overall). That’s a fairly tall order, especially with a road trip to LA, a game @Colorado, and the finale @stanfurd.
Plus then if we don’t win a couple of games in the conference tourney, that’d really hurt as well.

I really like these guys and I want them to succeed. Especially the seniors. My mind is mush right now after that game…has Harper ever even played in the NCAAs? Constructive observation
I think everyone can see Smitty is a liability right now, and probably shouldn’t be on the floor (if we had anything resembling a decent option). But you seem to relish attacking him with this unrelenting vigor…which makes people instinctively want to defend him. He’s gone from a reasonable Pac-12 point guard to someone who’s clearly regressed and is lacking confidence, but he’s a good kid, and gives 100%. I think most people around here want the discussion of his problems to at least leave the kid some dignity.
Agreed 100%
I respect the hell out of the kid and he was able to work hard and turn himself into a totally serviceable Pac-12 PG last year. Unfortunately, it hasn’t seemed to carry over this year so much.

It’s not just Smith.
Smith is to be commended for fighting his way above all the other bench warmers, which is more than I can say for myself – I never made a D-1 roster. NOT EVEN CLOSE!!! JC ball was my ceiling.
Well, I don’t think it’s bad to acknowledge that Smith hasn’t played very well this year, but let’s not make it out to be some inherent suckitude or anything, because he DID play at an acceptable level last year (sure, he wasn’t all-world, and it’s fair to hope we recruit more talented guys, but that’s not Smith’s fault).

On the other hand, we did manage to shut down Solomon Hill (I was surprised to see that he did log 30 minutes despite being in foul trouble).
However, Perry and Chol did have some wide open dunks against us from a combination of good passing (by them) and poor defending (by us).
by LEastCoastBears on Feb 2, 2012 11:05 PM PST up reply actions
Some of those dunks were not necessarily b/c of bad defending, but simply being overmatched from a power, height, leaping, strength standpoint. Weren’t we trying to recruit Chol at some point? I do recall his name linked to Cal early on. But, no.
I’d have to go back and check, but if I remember correctly the majority were created when a dribble drive forced a help defender over, leaving a man open to get the ball inside and dunk.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
my point is the same one I’ve been making for 3 years. Recruiting. If you have a 7 foot wookie under the basket, you tend not to give up very many dunks.
Regardless, I don’t think dunks were the problem. It was the pace. They have more bodies to throw at us. More fouls, too.
We were in foul trouble and had to back off, giving them the aggression edge. That’s huge!
If their guys foul out, just put in another one. If we foul out Gut, Cobbs, Harper, the game is over.
This would’ve been less of an issue if Solomon was eligible.

The one ref, the bald one, was simply incompetent. There was a play early in the second half. The Arizona play drove and threw the ball off the bottom of the backboard and it went out of bounds… Astoundingly, though he was not three feet away, he called it Arizona possession… he had to be overruled by an official 30 feet away. It was utter and complete incompetence. Or worse. That right there was your Pac 12 officiating at work.

8 minutes to go, down by about 9 or so….

My thoughts
#1: Arizona is a deeper team with more overall talent. That’s why we lost.
#2: Jorge picked up his second foul after a turnover. Never try to steal the ball immediately after you make a foul. After that, Lavendar tried to goad the feisty Gut into a foul, and even though that was the most BS call I’ve ever seen, it worked for AZ. I am super pissed at Arizona for that. I bet Miller told his players to mess with Gut b/c of Gut’s past feisty fouling nature in big games. A punch in the dick is a low blow, no pun intended, to sportsmanship. I want to fucking smash Lavendar in the face, punk!
I wasn’t thrilled with the game management in the last minute or so. Monty usually draws something good and our guys execute pretty well out of the timeout.
We attacked the basket on a couple of plays in the last minute, which is pretty standard, but I would have wanted Monty to control the clock more.
You can’t blame anyone for that. We had layups, which should be free shots. Arizona just made amazing defensive plays.
I agree, those were great defensive plays. I don’t think we should have been driving straight into the teeth of the defense.
I do.
They were all in foul trouble. Those are supposed to be free shots, since all of their best players are trying not to get fouled out.
Within a minute to go, in the interest of preserving a three-point lead, I don’t think Arizona’s interior defenders are too concerned about fouling out. I don’t think the best strategy was to hope that the refs would make a call in our favor, either.
No, that’s generally not the point. The point is to get down by 1 point and then count on your defense to make a stop. Taking jumpers and threes are aggressive, low percentage shots. Getting those two free points puts you in a position to win later. It’s a bit conservative, but I don’t disagree with the decision. Unfortunately for us, we played a team with 4 Supermans.
With under 30 seconds left, that’s an iffy proposition. At some point you need to take the 3.

But given the time left, I would have been fine had Cobbs’ shut wasn’t swatted away and we cut the lead to 1 at that point. One thing in our favor was Arizona’s poor free throw shooting for the night.

you think misses at the end had something to do with the fact that we have no bench? Like, they were tired?
It do think it had some small part to do with fatigue and with Arizona’s athleticism.

There was at least one sequence where I was wondering why a timeout wasn’t being called, but I also liked our OvD matchup, so I was a little torn. I’m not remembering it exactly, and I’m too sad to take a look at the Tivo right now.
We had timeouts left. I was pretty surprised we didn’t call one, let everyone catch their breath, and let Monty draw up a play.

it appears scott is sitting at the opposite end from where the Lavendar punch in the nuts on Gut happened. Were it in front of Scott, I’d expect Lavendar to be suspended for at least 1 game. In fact, I’m an advocate of Pac12 reviewing that on video and suspending him anyways!!! I am serious. That has no place on the court.
Please join me in filing a complaint-protest!

Wait, when did this ‘punch’ happen? If it did, can we get a replay/screen grab?

Oh my god. Did you not watch it on TV?
Gut’s 3rd foul. Double foul, actually on Lavendar and Gut. It was such a fucking joke. I am still super pissed off!!!!!!!

i thought that was the game right there.
Actually, the game was when Gut got his 2nd and they went on a tear, but that was long before this. This cemented the game. Actually, they were just too deep, which is what I saw, and commented on, in the game against WSU. But then AZ lost at home to UW.
I saw AZ winning it in the tourney, if not the reg season.
I loved it when Monty was complaining and the ref was “I HAD ENOUGH GET OUT OF MY FACE.” I hope Larry saw that.
I was kind of shocked at how animated and PISSED OFF both Monty and Jay John were at halftime.

I wasn’t. Did you watch the end of the first half? I was surprised Monty didn’t just knock the ref out and take his T. That might’ve actually won us the game if he punched hard enough to concuss the ref.
Oh, I totally understood WHY. I wasn’t confused by it, just pleasantly surprised that the normally reserved Cal coaching staff was as heated as I was. :)

I feel like I'm going to write this a few more times before this season ends
But without Solomon we are merely a good five-six man team. Once our starters got into foul trouble our bench got roasted. Cobbs got blown by a lot, passed up some open shots and in general didn’t play that well.
Wildcats are more athletic though. Arizona got to the rim at will in this one (although Jorge locked down Johnson, Fogg looked unstoppable). I saw layup after layup after dunk after layup during that stretch when we fell behind by double digits. Officiating was awful, but it generally rewards the more athletic team, and that’s what happened tonight nearly the entire game.
Arizona is going to be a nightmare matchup for us as long as Miller is around. He’s as good at Xs and Os as Monty, and he recruits the pants off of the West Coast. I hope some NBA team swoops him up soon.
Still a team that can win the conference though. GO BEARS!

I hear ya, but two guards ain’t gonna get it done.
Guess what? Next year we replace Gut with Wallace, and still have Smith and Emerson as backups to the 2 starting guards. Think it gets any better?
College basketball is a guard oriented game. Face it. We are in trouble.
Kreklow may be really good, but I think he plays the 3 position, no? Can he handle the rock and dribble it up court thru traffic? Crabbe cannot. Maybe Kreklow can be a ball control handler…. Help us Obi Wan, you’re our only hope.
Kreklow could play the starting two. He’s got the game for it.
Murray should be better next season. Think it’s taking him some time to learn.
Wallace should be okay as long as he’s the backup to Cobbs. Smith can handle some minutes too.
Crabbe/Rossi at the 3 is fine.
Kravish/Behrens at the 4.
Solomon/Thurman at the 5.
We’ll be ok.

PAC 12 REFS SUCK!!
I was right smack dab in the front row of The Bench to watch this game, and from my viewpoint, it was one of the worst officiated games I’ve ever seen, ever! I could not believe how many wishy washy calls that went Arizonas way, and how many times we were hacked and didn’t get a whistle. There was a reason the refs got booed off the court. Everyone was out of their seat to let them know how they felt, even the 70 year olds!
That play at the end of the game where Arizona got a layup, was that not a charge? I think it was Kravish or Kamp? Whoever it was, they had their feet set and the Arizona guy just ran right over them and it was a no call. I couldn’t believe it, considering the way they had been calling the game the whole night. Did it look different on TV?
Hate to be gloom about this
but I think this loss might significantly damage our chance of outright winning the regular season Pac-12. Washington does still need to make a trip to Arizona and UCLA, but I’m worried about Cal’s trip to LA and that trip back to the high elevation of Colorado. Having played there last year (in the NIT) does help, but that’s a tough game (and Washington’s only other conference loss).

I’ve been to McKale. McKale has been impossible to win at – but that’s because Arizona has had excellent – awesome teams for the past 20 years, NOT because of the crowd.
The best basketball crowds in the Pac over the last 20 years have been Oregon (until Matt Court), Stanfurd (ugh), us and UW.

In Monty’s day they were really loud.
Been to all of them, and I thought old Harmon was the best. I realize this is impossible, but I wish we could have kept that thing forever.
Those were our spots! (The band had center court, so we were the first bench row next to that which lined up against the other team. Do we know each other?
We chose those – not for superstition, but so that we could yell at the other coaches. Especially Lute and Monty.
Was there through 91-92 season. Studied abroad fall 92 so the a-hole ticket office wouldn’t let my friends buy me student tix with my student ID, so the spring of Kidd’s freshman year I had to wait in line for the overflow tix every game, and never got good seats. (Friends tried to save me some, but it never worked out well.) Came back a lot as an alum the rest of Harmon’s life, and snuck into student section, but was all over the place. I’m guessing we just missed each other.
Kidd’s freshman year we sold out of student tickets. I remember waiting in line immediately after midnight madness until 7am the next morning.

Having the football games in the city hurt b/c in the fall is when freshman learn the cheers and generally get really into Cal athletics, which carries over to basketball when football ends. There were so few students at ATT that I think kept people away from basketball until the last two… Hopefully the Haas is still rocking Saturday, although a game against a poor ASU team might not draw that many fans… Anyway, if my theory is true, the new Memorial will be gift that keeps on giving next year.

Reminded me
of the bad old days of Jekyll/Hyde/Randle, when he would try to drive every time and turn the ball over.
He slept walked through most of the game, minus the steal/dunk for the lead… Kravish was pretty non-existent today too after a disappointing game against the furd…
I wouldn't say he sleptwalk
He was just outplayed by a far more athletic guard. It’s really hard to play better than a guy who’s more athletic than you.
by Avinash Kunnath on Feb 2, 2012 11:58 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah, I agree with that, but it still seemed he lacked mental focus, especially in the first half. There were a few passes to him where he should’ve come harder to the ball and sealed his man in the process. He had an inbound pass to Smith that was stolen because Cobbs tried to force it to him when the man was all over him. Maybe it’s a function of Turner (?) guarding him really closely, but he just wasn’t sharp today.
I don’t know who would disagree with that statement.

Well, we have the bench we have. If we have to throw them out there because we can’t lean on the starters so much for an entire season, then that’s what we have to do.

as someone who sits across from the Bench/students, I can say that the bear backers there are as concerned with the other distinguished Cal Alumns (community members) they see in the stands, or whom might see them, as they are with what’s happening on the court.
So, if they stand up and start acting like a jack ass, well, they don’t want their esteemed colleagues to think they are a hyper-ventilating jack ass.
Alright.
Sounds like it’s time for CGB to take over the bear backer section.
it’s the expensive seats… I sat above the band area and it was pretty loud I thought… The seatbacks don’t like to stand up for much except at the very end. We stood for the last 5 minutes-ish but I noticed some people further back were complaining about us standing lol
Here's another angle on it.
Monty brings in some bad ass muthers who can put on a show – then schedule some quality games and become a top10 program!
Then the joint will be jumping. How about that angle?
Harmon was jumping with some very very bad teams. And some mediocre teams. Its not about the quality of basketball.
okay then
I never made it to Harmon. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb.
I knew they were going to tear it down, and didn’t make it.
Impossible!
Anyways, what IS the formula, Leon? Seriously. Play GM for a drink.
You need to get students there first – and its sounding like the ath. dept at least is making strong progress on that front
You need it to be fun – yes the product on the court matters, but so does having a strong mic man, creative cheers (and seriously, I haven’t heard these in years – back in the day – before my day even, Harmon was a very FUNNY student section.) Clever, sometimes crass, but it got the rest of the fans going
Then repeeat repeat repeat – and pretty soon, you’ve got a loud student section. The base is being laid for that now.
okay, I like it
go with it.
How do you get students in there?
Free beer party outside before the game and you are FORCED inside to pee?
No, seriously….. I’m messing around. Continue.
meaning, the only bathrooms are inside Haas, where they discover, oh my – there’s about to be a basketball game in here. Let’s sit and watch.
Did I scare you away?
I was hoping to find some photos of a “drunk student” section going crazy to liven things up.
All I could find where these:
http://lolpranks.com/tag/permanent-marker-drunk-prank/
I think one of those guys is my friend Aaron who lives in Australia now….
I acknowledged it was loud tonight and last Sat at the furd game… i just used to see the bench jump up and down a lot, like at the football games and was wondering why they don’t do it so much anymore at bball games. Not questioning the noise, just wondering about the jumping.
ah, I apologize then. The only way I can trace your comment up is if I draw a line from it up on my screen. I’m not gonna do that…. again….

Do you guys know about the keyboard shortcuts?
Press C to tab to new comments, Shift-C to tab backwards, X to mark as read, and Shift-A to mark all read.
The best: Z will simultaneously mark and tab forward, and R will reply to the comment that has focus.
Also, as it says, C tabs forward through new (highlighted) comments, but K tabs backwards, which I’ve also found useful.
The SBN platform and particularly the comment engine is pretty great… when the site can stay up and running anyway :)

This is how its been for years unfortunately. I remember being in the student section in 07 and 08 and being really frustrated that the rest of the arena seemed so docile.

Of all the things to complain about in this game...
The Bench is not one of them. We might not live up to the glory days, but god dammit we’re trying.
I live far away, so I only get back 3-4 times a year, but when I have, The Bench has been fine. It’s the rest of that place that has taken a step back. I had season tix through 2005, and it seems like it went steadily downhill throughout that period, and has gotten worse since.
It’s unbelievable how little noise they can make. The Arizona fans were drowning out the Cal fans for good chunks of the game, and we outnumbered them 10:1. I only presume the presence of chairbacks means the audience is getting older, and we need to change that up soon.
by Avinash Kunnath on Feb 3, 2012 12:15 AM PST up reply actions
Some of us here need to get rich fast and buy up a whole bunch of them for CGB commenters only. Anyone have the next Facebook idea??
I originally had access to chairbacks through a connection, but gave up on them and got my own tickets behind the basket. God bless those old blues, they’re loyal and have been going to games for longer than I’ve been alive, but they’re way too sedate, and I’m a loud mother f—-er at games. I understand the financial and political realities, but those chairbacks were the worst possible design decision for the atmosphere in the new arena.
And even if you were a billionaire, it would be hard if not impossible to pry big blocks of those seats away from their owners.
I;m sorry avi, but this is bullshit… what would happen is there would be a lull… the UofA fans would start their chant… there were maybe 200 of them if that… unfortunately the students didn’yt respond in the first half so it would just fill the dead time… by the second half the students were responding properly.
Students were great, and I’m sure down below it was more Cal. But in the nosebleeds it was all Zona Zoo.

I didn't say it well
No, I was in the Cal section, which was pretty subdued until we tied the game, then went back to being quiet.
The Zona fans were right up top in the corners and the top seats, and those motherfuckers stood and yelled and taunted and berated. It was really hard being in the non-chairbacks tonight.
by Avinash Kunnath on Feb 3, 2012 12:36 AM PST up reply actions
Maybe
but certainly wasn’t full… so either it wasn’t a sell-out or not everyone showed up.
Gold-out was kinda disappointing too. I blame all the fat cats who wear buttondown oxfords instead of Cal gear.
Yeah, it was not gold enough… If you really want a complete "[Insert Color Here]-Out] you really need to give out free shirts like the Heat did in the playoffs w/ Shaq and Wade… But we’re poor so… it was a good effort.
And it wasn’t full. The corners were empty.
Sandy has been deep in thought about the budget lately… Hmmmm. What to do with Larry Scott money!
1) Save Baseball (and other sports)
2) Give Tosh et al raises
3) Give scholarships to walk-ons since we saved $ on Tosh
4) Hand out free shirts for a Gold Out Night
5) Do nothing and report positive cash flow to Birgeneau! :-)
The AZ fans capitalized on how quiet we are when the bears have the ball. We have no unified answer to the nose bleed U of A chant bouncing off the rafters and I think a lot of fans feel its taboo to make any noise on offense. All that aside, my ears are still ringing and I felt the crowd was pretty good tonight, and was rightfully given kudos on the postgame radio show for almost willing the team to a come back victory. More gold than I was expecting too. Hopefully the fans can keep it up and build off the energy of the last two games. And great job Bench!

Dude, the Bench at Stanford was as good as anything Ive ever seen. I cant speak to Harmon, tho.
But from my experience, you guys have done a great job revitalizing it. Keep the pressure on! KEEP IT ON!
And remember, the only reason there was a “glory day” is because all the people posting here think of THEIR TIME at Cal as the “GLORY DAY WHEN THE BEST OF BEST OCCURED.”
Create your OWN memories at Cal! You dont realize how you will remember games like last night or Sunday in the next 5-10 years.
I remember being at the game where Sean Lampley broke the scoring record and being all “Oh, ok, this si cool, I guess.” I remember being at the game where Matt Barnes nearly got MURDERED by the student section and thinking “wow, look at that.” At the time, they were just things that existed. Now, they are PART OF THE GLORY YEARS!
And then 20 years from now, tell those youngsters how amazing it USED to be with Jorge and Co back when Cal REALLY REALLY cared about sports.

Think about this, Twist!
20 years from now, all of us here on this board will say, "I remember when this new board called CaliforniaGoldenBlogs appeared and we’d all gather on game nights and watch the game on TV and chat back and forth. Some of those jokes were hilarious. I never knew those guys, but they were like brothers, dammit.

I love how many posters were at the game. I couldnt make it last night, but am excited to go to the game tomorrow at ASU.
I dont think the scene isg ong to be as hot, bc ASU isnt quite the draw as Arizona. Nonetheless, its good to see Haas rocking again!

Anybody has information about the DJ Foster rumor. besides RG’s tweets
by WallStreet GoldenBear on Feb 3, 2012 12:22 AM PST reply actions
Just heard about this
not one of the “connected” guys, but man would I love to land Foster, if only to prevent him from sucking at ASU because their line play is a joke
I have ventured forth, oh master
And I can report back this….
If young DJ Foster is having 2nd thoughts about leaving ASU after his nice TV spot announcement for his hometown fans, then I feel a bit sorry for him.
And will welcome him home to papa happily!
You can’t really blame anyone for regretting a decision to go to ASU instead of Cal. Especially anyone who is a credible student.

Ugh
Very tough game to swallow. Haas was absolutely rockin’ tonight—loudest “Jorge” chants I’ve heard and I could barely hear myself think after that Cobbs dunk to tie the game. Another positive: Zach Kline and Avery Sebastian were both in the middle of The Bench, standing the whole game and making noise.

It’s good to have this place to wallow after tough games like that.
Well, I’ll take a look again tomorrow and maybe it won’t be so bad, but right now it seems like we’re very bubbly and every game is crucial. So on the bright side, our March starts in February, and who doesn’t love a little March Madness. Extra excitement for everybody. Plus, we’ve got an easy one on Saturday, so that’s nice.
Should still be a fun ride the rest of the way. G’night. Go Bears.
We were bubbly after Solomon was lost for the year. Monty’s used to it though, we’ll see how far he can take us.

Nighty Night, Reef.
One word for you… I watch all the preseason games – make up my mind what kind of team we are going to have. That way, my expectations are set.
I was riding the bandwagon for a while there. But then we lost to lowly OSU and WSU and hopped off after that, knowing nights like tonight were/are going to happen – especially moreso with Solo out.
So, basically, yeah – go to bed with you tears on your pillow….
Forever yours,

Yessir. Still very much in the race thankfully and only 1 game back. I don’t think UW’s gonna run the table so we still probably have 1-2 chances to catch them, but gotta take care of business. Esp in games like tonight where we had all the momentum after tying it up, but couldn’t get a damn basket on the next few possessions. Trust in Monty!!
They probably won’t run the table, but we’re not very likely to do it either.

Oh, and ALSO
Before the start of the second half, I started yelling big time at one of the refs, who called the police over, who told me if I yelled once more at him, I would get thrown out of the game. I asked them if they could have a talk with him, and tell him how to ref. They didn’t seem very amused.
*Insert something witty here*. Oh, and Stanfurd Sucks.
Dude, I wish I would have been over there when that happened… I think you know I would have had a few things to say… I am SO FUCKING PISSED at those idiot officials
Don't think so
I was the only one the police approached as far as I could tell haha

You cannot be serious!
Arizona visiting fans are the worst in the conference. Should’ve been locked up after chanting “U-S-A” when Jorge was shooting FTs.
I embarrassed to be an American at times like that!
Great discussion guys. Really a tough game. Im sorry that CGB went down for chunks of it. We have no control over that stuff. Woulda been a great game to discuss more with you guys.
