Cal Men's Basketball vs. Arizona Wildcats Live Thread

Arizona Wildcats at California Golden Bears, Feb 2, 2012 8:00 PM PST

It's a GOLD OUT! One can only hope that enough Cal fans are able to make the weeknight trek to see a great match-up between your sturdy Golden Bears and the visiting Wildcats.

A preseason top-25 team and one of the favorites for winning the Pac-12, Arizona has under-achieved relative to expectations. But, their talent is undeniable. It should be a lot of fun watching Jorge (unrated) going head to head with two true frosh that were ranked in the top 10 at their position out of high school.

Go Bears!

Tip-off: 8pm (PST)

Sweet, Jonathan Coachman, ESPN in-studio host, at halftime of UW – UCLA, pointing out how bad the Pac-12 is and using the first half as an example. And he’s right. Very low quality of play.

Ducks not playing defense: Utah is shooting 10-21 from two, 7-12 from three.

Evidently no defense is allowed in the entire state – Colorado is shooting 64% against the Beavers.

I figure they’ll come back and win it, because despite much evidence to the contrary, I still can’t believe Utah can beat anybody.

I will have the game on, but

I will not be home to monitor it. My brother is having a birthday party at a restaurant at 8 PM tonight.

UCLA-UW is borderline unwatchable. Really sloppy, neither team taking care of the ball.

by iheartmonty on Feb 2, 2012 7:24 PM PST reply actions

I’m entertaining myself waiting for Josh Smith to collapse from exhaustion.

by Reef on Feb 2, 2012 7:26 PM PST up reply actions

I think he hit a season-high in minutes in the first half alone.

by iheartmonty on Feb 2, 2012 7:27 PM PST up reply actions

Update: Smith plays first 3:30 of 2nd half, asks Howland for a blow

by Reef on Feb 2, 2012 7:28 PM PST up reply actions

Somehow he’s managed to avoid body bias fouls; it’s impressive.

by iheartmonty on Feb 2, 2012 7:33 PM PST up reply actions

I’m confused. Why is UCLA good at shooting threes?

by iheartmonty on Feb 2, 2012 7:49 PM PST up reply actions

Those were actually terrible possessions, in the sense that Smith didn’t get a touch like four straight trips. On one trip Lamb posted up BEHIND Smith, who was calling for the ball. Ridiculous.

If they try to rely on the perimeter the rest of the game they dramatically reduce their chance to pull this off.

by Reef on Feb 2, 2012 7:52 PM PST up reply actions

True. If Smith is on the floor, the ball has to go to him.

But, generally speaking, UCLA is shooting better than 44 percent from three in conference play. How?

by iheartmonty on Feb 2, 2012 7:56 PM PST up reply actions

I did not realize that, and I have no idea.

by Reef on Feb 2, 2012 7:57 PM PST up reply actions

are they?

they hit on some key 3’s (to bail out of bad possessions) but only 5 for the game (they hit about 6 per game)

by LEastCoastBears on Feb 2, 2012 7:56 PM PST up reply actions

ASU leads the Furd down on the farm. Furdies still ice cold from the floor, offensive rebounds keeping them in it.

AZ gets a put-back, Crabbe misses a 3, Chol misses a bucket, Cal turns it over and Jorge picks up foul #2.

Well, if you looked at Pasternack’s face as he was staring at Jorge getting up, you’d think it was intentional too.

by slaphancock on Feb 2, 2012 10:20 PM PST up reply actions

Looked he said something and “pushed” his leg at Jorge. It probably was more of an “OH SHIT!” moment than anything else, but I can understand why Jorge would get pissed off with the adrenaline he’s probably going through at the time. That said, fuck Joe Pasternack anyway.

by mrjpark on Feb 2, 2012 10:19 PM PST up reply actions

At the very least, Pasternack’s side of the interaction was EXTREMELY unbecoming for a coach.

by atomsareenough on Feb 2, 2012 10:21 PM PST up reply actions

I have much respect for Sean Miller for standing up and making an effort to break Jorge’s fall. Most coaches would just get the fuck out of the way and let the player potentially hurt himself.

The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS

by norcalnick on Feb 2, 2012 10:23 PM PST up reply actions

I dunno how bad it was, but it was definitely enough to really upset Jorge. It looks like he at least stuck his leg out and maybe put his arm into Jorge’s face/chest area, and then gave Jorge a really dirty look on top of it. I have no idea if there was more.

good fight in the 2nd half

The hole was just too big. And we had nothing left in the tank by the end—Crabbe and Cobbs were running on fumes.

AZ had Turner and Hill both pick up 3rd and 4th fouls and sit for long periods. It had an impact the way losing Jorge in the first half did for us.

A really tough loss

got to love how we fought back from the huge deficit and we had some good look to take the lead late, but it’s still a tough pill to swallow. It’s really crazy how Zona couldn’t miss on any FG for awhile but also missed all those FTs.

I love the intensity from our guys, Thurman, Kamp, and Jorge all jumped into the crowd to (try to) save the ball. Of course, now I worry about how fresh/healthy the team will be comes Saturday. Kravish was down at one point (got punched in the jaw?). Hopefully, we can handle ASU the same way Furd got them tonight.
