Cal Women's Basketball At Oregon State: Preview & Gamethread
When: 2:00 pm PT
Audio Stream: Cal Bears All-Access
Gametracker
It's (hypothetically speaking) the last game ever that Cal fans won't be able to watch in some capacity! Unfortunately, it should be game well worth watching, because the continually surprising Beavers are one of a handful of teams still in contention for 2nd place in the Pac-12 behind likely conference coach of the year Scott Rueck.
Simply put, if Cal wins they'll earn the 2 seed in the Pac-12 tournament. A two or three game lead with three to play and Cal's rivals all playing each other is a pretty safe scenario. But if OSU wins they'll be just a game back with Cal having Stanford left on the schedule. The good news is that Cal played one of their best games of the year in beating Oregon State in Berkeley. If the Bears can duplicate that performance they'll feel pretty good about themselves as they head into a three game homestand to finish the season.
But prior to losing to Stanford the Beavers had won six straight Pac-12 contests. For the 2nd year in a row Coach Rueck has his team playing better ball at the end of the season than at the beginning. For that reason and because Cal is playing in Corvallis, I would be delighted if the Bears won the game by anywhere near the margin they won in Berkeley. Go Bears!

There should be a video stream,

Let’s hope the damned thing works well.
(My, fandom is complicated: the Beavs’ video, muted; Dave Lewis, loudish; GameTracker for stats; and this gamethread for fun.)
HEY NICK! THERE'S VIDEO!
I checked out the Oregon State site, and they appear to have free streaming video of the game!

Oh, CB81!
There’s me being my usual demure self with people I haven’t actually met (“Uh, gee, guys, I think there might be video.”) and you: “HEY NICK! THERE’S VIDEO!” I find this hilarious, for some reason.
OK.
HEY! CAL! KILLS THOSE DUMB BEAVS!
(And Brittany heard me! And so did—was that Layshia?)
Crud, I can't watch!
Familial obligations today, but I thought I’d only be missing the radio broadcast!

I love them too much to inflict such pain! (I’ll let you decide if I’m talking about my family or the team.)

Boyd takes the ball right out of the Beavers’ hands, and takes it all the way. 2-0 Bears.

It must be, I think BTown is in attendance!

TALIA MADE A FREE THROW!
Love it when she does that. BearBloke now pounding his desk with enthusiasm.
ASU 30, WSU 20, with just 10 minutes left
Glad we only got ASU once this year, they sure play some ugly games.

You're kidding.
They are painful to play, Charli’s lot.
Only a 2-point margin again.
Everyone eat some dark chocolate to convey extra energy up to Corvallis.
Less fouls in 2012-13
At least, that’s my hope

Slightly weird game.
I’d like to see a lot more rebounds.
These refs are terrible. Just in general. Calling em bad both ways. Also, OSU band is as square as ever.

Slightly off topic, but here's a baseball update:
California leads Pacific 4-3 heading into the 7th inning.

CALIFORNIA ANGELS . . . ANAHEIM DUCKS . . . CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS

I'll be happier
when Justine is able to elevate again.
But I'm actually happy enough
with Eliza’s having learned to score.
Hopefully the 2nd half will match the 2nd half vs Oregon.

Boyd is down again. Can’t tell what is happening because the video isn’t showing anything. Now Dave Lewis is saying she got an elbow in the face, and the refs are checking to see if it was a flagrant foul.
CGB: The Strangest Blog
Dave says she’s got a cut or bruise under her left eye. But she’s staying in the game. Cal had to use a time out.
CGB: The Strangest Blog
I still don't understand that.
B.B. just ran into someone elbow?
Brittany turning into Jorge
A bruise magnet.

During the time out, the Beavers are having some sort of race with three orange miniature pedal-powered tractors. So Oregon State!

My lord.
To think of Cal’s biggest margin being 8. Over OSU.
Good for the conference, though, to see OSU leap from bottom of the heap to #3.

I see what you mean about
the pink and gold—looks like a walking fruit salad.
I'd say our girl's confidencehas returned--
just in time for Palo Alto and the Pac-12 tournament.
Layshia misses the first on a one-and-one, but gets her own rebound. She back at the line.

Must remember to check out Chucky vs Utah later:
(Poor woman. She must get sick of all those bad-seed jokes. I wanted to post a photo of the movie Chucky here, but CGB wouldn’t let me.)
Whoa, looking at the box score – OSU scored 19 points in the last 3 minutes of the game!!! After what USC did to us, I wonder if our defense at end-of-game scenarios needs work?
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
OSU was hitting threes pretty much at will there at the end, so yeah, that needs some work.
CGB: The Strangest Blog
The threes weren’t really “at will.” I would say two of the four were crazy circus threes that they wouldn’t make once out of ten more tries.
by paleodan on Feb 18, 2012 5:50 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Okay. But a couple of them were not well-defended. One in particular, I recall, was very open. That needs not to happen on even one shot at the end of the game when everybody knows that the other team has to shoot threes.
CGB: The Strangest Blog
Anyway, the good news is that the Bears did an amazing job of hitting their free throws, which is what saved the game. If they can start hitting FTs like that regularly, they will be practically unstoppable.

FREE THROW SHOOTING. So important. We have been so bad at it. If we are truly turning the corner, then bless Lindsay Gottlieb’s soul.
