After losing like that against USC, the Bears should be plenty motivated to start another win streak. And although they are on the road, I could think of few teams better suited for just that purpose than Oregon. The Bears should be heavy favorites today because the Ducks have struggled this season and because Cal has matched up very well against them since Paul Westhead took over.
Except . . . Oregon has been on something of a hot streak. It started with a rather shocking 21 point win over UCLA. The Ducks have since added three more wins over Utah, Colorado and Washington State and their two most recent losses were competitive games decided by single figures. It’s probably not a coincidence that most of this run came with Amanda Johnson’s return from injury.
So I’m not going to assume a win today, especially since the Bears didn’t look their sharpest at home last week. If Cal can run with the Ducks and hold down Johnson they’ll probably escape Matt Court with a comfortable win. But we all remember Cal’s trip to Tucson – the Bears aren’t so dominant that road victories can be assumed. They’ll have to play well to earn this one.
Our computer overlords (Sagarin) predict: Cal by 10.37

Oregon hasn’t been able to beat Cal recently for two main reasons: they can’t buy a rebound, and the Bears are fast enough to run right with the Ducks, neutralizing their offense in the process. In the previous game at Haas, Cal won the rebounding battle 61-22. Cal had more offensive rebounds than Oregon had total rebounds!
Amanda Johnson is a great player and a good rebounder, and without her Oregon stood no chance. With her back there is always the possibility that the Ducks will be able to hold their own on the glass. But it’s hard to imagine one player making up a 40 rebound differential by herself.
Really, the main way Cal can hurt themselves is if they don’t shoot well. Oregon won’t put up a ton of defensive resistance, and Cal hasn’t had trouble scoring against them in the past. Oregon won’t win this game with rebounding, turnovers or free throws, so they’re going to have to shoot way better than the Bears. I don’t think that’s likely, but stranger things have happened.

Lindsay on the USC loss:
‘My general belief is that when we’re up 7 with two minutes less and we lose, that’s on the coach.’

Did you hear Coach G talk about the wiffle ball game the coaches and players played this week (to get their minds off the loss)? She said she hit a two-run home run. How the heck do you hit a home run with a wiffle ball?!?!

Or a generous official scorer?
Man crush on Aaron Rodgers, since 2003.

Good start!
Brittany drawing fouls = good, Brittany hitting her FTs = better!

Not doing very well on the boards so far
Hopefully that changes soon.

It doesn’t look like there is any Gametracker available. I went to the Oregon website, and they have “Live Stats” to click on, but it shows the game hasn’t started yet. Bummer.

It’s weird how they call us “Cal” but they call themselves “OREW.” Every time I see “OREW” my first thought is: why are they given us crew stats?

Layshia with a hot start
Her shooting is so critical for this team, so that’s a good early sign.

Obviously we can't see to be sure
But the stats are indicating some not very good defense by the Bears.

27-23 Ducks
This game is clearly being played in bizarro land!

Ugh, I was already to type ‘down by 1!’ and then Dave had to use the ‘Blow the layup!’ line.

Our defense sounds very not good.
BUT GEN MAKES A 3 SO WHO CARES?!

Quel thrill!
BearBloke thought she had done this once before, but I knew it was a historic first.
I thought she had one as well
Must’ve been a couple when she had a foot on the line or something.

I think there have been like 5 turnovers in a row by both teams.

And then Oregon travels. That’s three travels and one double dribble on their last four possessions.

Let’s hope the Bears settle down and put them away in the second half. We only had Boyd for a total of 5 minutes in the half, due to fouls. We need her to get back on track, especially after her troubles against USC and Ucla.

A streaking, accurate B.B., and more rebounds.
But how great to see (well, hear about) all those 3-pointers.
OMFG!
Arizona has won a game—and by a 39-point margin (over Wazzu). Good for them—they’ve been jogging in place, more or less, since Shawntinice Polk’s death.
I just found this quote about last Saturday’s Arizona-Stanford game:
Finding positives in a 40-point loss is no easy chore. Arizona coach Niya Butts insists she saw some in the Wildcats’ 91-51 setback against No. 4 Stanford on Saturday. “I didn’t like the outcome but the team did a lot of things this weekend that we really improved on,” Butts said.I guess she wasn’t kidding!

Poor Brandon Smith
He makes a great play and the refs take it away with a horrible foul call.

Ahem. Yes, I wondered what you were talking about, NCN.
But I forgive you.
Lovely interview with Eliza.
She’s afraid of heights? That’s charming. But odd; I remember when the girls were cutting down the WNIT net, and the post players, especially DeNesha, were the most nervous about climbing the ladder.
And I was most nervous watching Coach Boyle climb the ladder in those heels of hers!

Good news (an omen, perhaps!):

See? Reshanda burst in with a bucket and a rebound.
2nd half starting off just as ugly as the end of the 1st half
Fouls, turnovers, missed shots, lose balls.

What's going on with Talia?
She’s been quiet. Flu? Identity crisis?
Good girl, B.B.
Here’s your and Reshanda’s chance to be sheroes, once again.
Clearly she was waiting for you to say something, BearBint. You should have spoken up sooner.

TALIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There.
And BOYD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK, Talia and everybody else:
I WANT A RUN! A l-o-o-o-n-n-n-g run.
Bears are 7-17 on threes, after starting out 6-8. So that’s 1 of the last 9. Time to back off on the threes?

LAYSHIA! AND 1!
Wait . . . Johnson only has 3 points? Why do I bother previewing games if everything happens opposite of what I write?
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
I'm getting a little tired of
Palo Alto’s beating everyone.
Perhaps Cal could do something about this.
OMG, LAYSHIA AGAIN!
We’ve got Gray with four personal fouls, and Boyd, Caldwell, and Brandon with 3.
CGB: The Strangest Blog
I love Layshia.
So calm, so endlessly competent. And ours.
Just imagine them
roasted with mushrooms and touch of raspberries. And a nice Zinfandel.
That was supposed to be "a touch of raspberries."
Throw in some rice and greens, and chocolate for dessert.
2nd half went much more like expected – Cal dominating the boards and getting the ball inside.

So by my calculations, we have a two game lead over both Oregon State and Arizona State, with four games to play. If we beat OSU, that’s pretty close to sealing up second place. But if we don’t beat them, it will be very tight, since we still have to play Stanford, along with Utah and Colorado, while OSU has Oregon, Utah, and Colorado. At least we play the last three games at home, while OSU plays all three on the road. And ASU has a tougher schedule with Washington State at home, then Ucla, USC, and Arizona on the road.
Let’s make it easy on ourselves, Bears, and beat Oregon State on Saturday!

I like Gibson,
but I still want our rookie PG to smack down their rookie PG.
Woo hoo. Great night.
The men and women both win!
