DBD 2.13.2012: The Many Faces Of Twist
Hey folks did you know that there are many different faces of Twist? Luckily for me I've uncovered the many different faces of Twist. Here they are.
Sleepy Twist: My favorite Twist because he's too tired to troll the world.
Happy Twist: He's just trolled CGB and is very proud of himself.
Seductive Twist: How can any lady or man resist that mustache and scarf? I'm quivering just looking at this picture.
Lawyer Twist: He just sued some old lady and will now celebrate his new income at the symphony.
Psychotic Twist: Make him angry and he'll take your heart!
Have a good week, people.

It irks me that awards shows are tape-delayed for the west coast, especially since it’s done in LA. Nevertheless, it’s not like I would watch it anyways…
And I for some reason have it in the background. I didn’t mind that “hippie” garb since at least one of the artists I like wear stuff like that regularly…

Why are people constantly talking about this show? Is it really that good? What’s it about?

Hmmm, that description in and of itself doesn’t seem to have “hit show” written all over it, so there must be more to it than that. I’m pretty sure there isn’t some latent fascination with WWI England in our popular culture… so why are people so into it?

It’s a soap opera-esque ensemble period piece. It’s not brilliantly acted a la The Sopranos, the characters don’t have the complexity of Mad Men, it’s just fun to watch.
FUTBALL IZ SRS BUSINESS GUYZ // ONLY HAVE FUN WHEN ROZ BWL
--Thoroughbred
Interesting way to look at it. I’ve never watched Mad Men, and barely the Sopranos, but I don’t think it’s quite fair to say the acting’s not good. The characters are fairly simply defined and it’s not like there’s a lot of scene-chewing because that wasn’t the social milieu at the time…
but that said, it is mostly a guilty pleasure.

I think it was more country-bumpkin…….I think she looks great !
I'd like to smell the Roses before I die.
For what it’s worth, I got to see Taylor in concert when I chaperoned my daughter and her friend (both 11 years old) to her concert in Portland this past September. Now, I know it’s bubble-gum country music, but she put on a hell of a show. Every little girl in the arena walked out feeling like Taylor cared about each one of them. She writes alot of her own lyrics, plays instruments, moves around alot…….basically, she gives you more than the value of the ticket, which is not something I’d say about alot of musicians these days.

calbears.com has a story on it, too
Former Cal men’s golfer Charlie Wi finished second at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am after having held or co-held the lead at the end of each of the event’s first three days of action. Wi shot an even-par 72 at the Pebble Beach Golf Links on Sunday to finish at 15-under par and two strokes behind winner Phil Mickelson, who fired an eight-under par 64 on Sunday.
Wi was on the verge of becoming the first former Cal golfer to win on the PGA Tour but settled for the fifth runner-up finish of his PGA Tour career.
Wi started Sunday’s action with a three-shot lead but quickly fell back to the pack after a double bogey on the first hole. After back-to-back bogeys on five and six dropped him to four-over par for the day and dropped Wi out of the lead, he played four-under par over his final 12 holes but was unable to catch Mickleson, who finished his round with an eagle, six birdies and 11 pars.

I also swing a baseball bat right handed. I blame Brock Whobrey – the kid down the block who taught me to swing a baseball bat. That made my golf swing righty as well.
fair enough, my dad is left handed and I learned how to swing a baseball bat from him. I imagine that is how I kept up with it in golf. Also, it was fun to try to copy Will Clark’s swing in the late 80s.
#trollgang
My handedness is all messed up. I am right footed. But I ride snowboards and skateboards goofy footed. I understand this to be wrong. Throwing, eating, writing, tennis, badminton, are all left. Throwing a frisbee, golf, baseball swing, scissor use is all right.
Fire Starkey Junior is like this. He writes right handed but throws and bats left handed. He can throw right handed, its pretty interchangable for him, but as he’s grown he’s always naturally thrown things with his left so I’ve encouraged that.

Men's basketball completes season sweep of Ucla
And moves into a 1st place tie in the Pac-12
California overcame early foul trouble by its big men and then withstood UCLA’s late rally to move into sole possession of first in the Pac-12 with its 20th victory of the season.
Justin Cobbs scored 18 points, Allen Crabbe added 14 and Jorge Gutierrez scored 13 in the Golden Bears’ 73-63 win Saturday.
“We were a little more patient in the second half,” said coach Mike Montgomery, who earned his third 20-win season at Cal. “I thought we got some better shots. We were having a hard time. UCLA had some very good adjustments to what happened in the first game and we were thinking we could get the same stuff and we couldn’t get the same stuff.”
The Bears (20-6, 10-3) shot 52 percent from the floor in completing their first season sweep of the Bruins since 1993-94. The Bears beat Southern California 75-49 on Thursday night and have won all four regular-season games against the LA schools for the first time since 1958-59.

Women's basketball suffers gut wrenching OT loss at home to USC
Layshia Clarendon forces OT with a miracle trey, but Bears squander 7-point lead in the OT
Junior guard Layshia Clarendon hit a buzzer-beating three to send the game to overtime, but the USC Trojans had a dramatic comeback of their own, erasing a seven-point OT deficit to defeat the California Golden Bears, 76-75.
…
The Bears opened the OT on a 7-0 run, holding a 72-65 lead with 1:50 left on the clock. The Bears continued to lead by five, 75-70, with 57 seconds left in the game.
The Trojans’ Ariya Cook got a jumper. The Bears turned the ball over while trying to inbound it after the score, leading to another jumper and a one-point game, 75-74, with 43 seconds left. Cal failed to score on their possession with Clarendon being called for an offensive foul with two seconds left on the shot clock and 18 on the game clock. USC’s Cook hit a jumper right in front of the basket with five seconds left in the game. The Bears sophomore guard Lindsay Sherbert threw up a desperation three right as the clock was expiring, but it failed to go in, giving USC the victory.

Cal Coaches Corner show on Monday
6:00 PM on 910 AM
Four coaches – Mike Montgomery, Lindsay Gottlieb, David Esquer and Nancy McDaniel – plus men’s basketball freshman David Kravish will be guests on Monday’s edition of the Cal Coaches Corner. The program airs from 6-7 p.m. on NewsTalk 910 and is broadcast live from the Paragon at the Claremont Hotel, Club and Spa.
Montgomery leads his Golden Bear basketball squad into the team’s final Haas Pavilion appearances of the year when Cal hosts Oregon Thursday and Oregon State Saturday. The games will serve as the last home contests for senior Jorge Gutierrez and Harper Kamp. The Bears enter the week at 20-6 overall and tied atop the Pac-12 standing with a 10-3 league mark as they batter for the conference championship.
Kravish, Cal’s 6-9 forward, played a big role in Cal’s road sweep of the LA schools last weekend. He snared a career-high 18 rebounds in a 75-49 victory over USC, then totaled nine points and six boards when the Bears downed UCLA, 73-63. For the year, Kravish is contributing 5.9 ppg and 5.5 rpg.

Reilly was nearly 20 seconds below the old record of 9:20.05 set by Deborah Maier in 2010. On Saturday, Reilly took second behind Kim Conley of SRA Elite, who won in a meet-record 8:57.62. Reilly was also under the old meet mark, in addition to being well below the NCAA automatic qualifying standard. I give her
tons of credit for singing songs that don’t involve 8,000 backup singers or auto-tune. Singers with great voices shouldn’t mess with that stuff. Just blow all the no-talents away with the voice.
Also, I don’t blame her for radio overplay. That’s not her fault, and it’s made me sick of several of her songs.

The improper response to your response:
It has to do more with the hype (not Adele’s fault) that the media and her fans create. People calling her a “living legend” and referring to the song “Someone Like You” as a “classic”
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
They might even be right about the song being a classic, we’ll certainly see over time.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.
Wall Street Journal seems to agree
What explains the magic of Adele’s song? Though personal experience and culture play into individual reactions, researchers have found that certain features of music are consistently associated with producing strong emotions in listeners. Combined with heartfelt lyrics and a powerhouse voice, these structures can send reward signals to our brains that rival any other pleasure.
Twenty years ago, the British psychologist John Sloboda conducted a simple experiment. He asked music lovers to identify passages of songs that reliably set off a physical reaction, such as tears or goose bumps. Participants identified 20 tear-triggering passages, and when Dr. Sloboda analyzed their properties, a trend emerged: 18 contained a musical device called an “appoggiatura.”
An appoggiatura is a type of ornamental note that clashes with the melody just enough to create a dissonant sound. “This generates tension in the listener,” said Martin Guhn, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia who co-wrote a 2007 study on the subject. “When the notes return to the anticipated melody, the tension resolves, and it feels good.”
Personally, though, I don’t enjoy the song and find it kinda whiney.
But to each his own.
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
The only song of hers with which I am familiar is the “rolling the in deep” one – I assume that’s “someone like you.”
I find most impressive about her that she seems to have kept a fair bit of the British music press on side, not because they’re trying to support a successful act but because they seem to like her as a person… which is borderline unheard of.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.

the missus loves Jennifer Hudson (after Dreamgirls) so we went to some charity event a couple of years ago that was $100 per seat. The bill was: a kids jumprope team from N. Carolina, Marvin Hamlisch, and Jennifer Hudson. She sang 3 songs and blew the lyrics on two of them. Never again.
Marvin Hamlisch was fantastic, lots of cool stories and fun to listen to.

From the category of “speaking ill of the dead” – Whitney Houston had a phenomenal voice and nothing upstairs. She is – or was – a perfect example of technical excellence with not much personality or artistic vision behind that excellence. When your general approach is “show emotion by singing louder,” you’re not bringing a whole lot to the table in terms of interpretation.
One man’s opinion.

I had a run in with Bobby Brown years ago in Portland. I was working as a chef at a hotel in Portland during their reunion tour in 96-97-ish. I got into a shouting match over the phone with someone from his entourage over his dinner. From what I remember, he ordered dinner then let it sit around for a few hours then called down to the kitchen to complain it was cold and wanted it reheated. Only problem was it that he ordered prawns and there was no way we could do anything about it other than make another one for him and charge him again.

You’re probably right. If I were to be a cranky old man on the subject, I’d blame it on a transition from coming into singing through choirs or other sources of musical training versus just going directly from “having a voice with potential” to “record company got me produced to sound like everyone else.”

She’s AWESOME! Her song on stage last night was incredible, and this after vocal chord surgery? And she’s humble as can be, so FTW isn’t to like? I like classic rock, too, and used to go the Bridge School benefit every years back in the day. I like 80s music (RIP Whitney….), I like reggae, I like pop country, and I like people who can sing. Zambia!
Zambia wins the African Nations Cup.
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report/_/id/338808?cc=5901
Zambia clinched their first African Nations Cup crown with a poignant penalty shoot-out win over Ivory Coast.
Nineteen years after a plane crash which killed 18 members of their squad in Libreville, the Chipolopolo returned to the Gabon capital to record the most famous victory in the country’s history.
A dramatic shoot-out at the end of 120 minutes of largely underwhelming football went the way of Zambia when Gervinho shot wide and Stophira Sunzu stepped up to slot home.
The final proved a tale of penalty woe for Ivory Coast, chasing their first continental crown for 20 years, with Didier Drogba also failing from the spot during the 90 minutes.
But the win was ultimately no more than Zambia deserved for a plucky display against the odds.
Hahaha Drogba hahaha…

-Louis Saha and Adebayor = goals galore?!
-Luis Saurez: Is he the worst person ever?
-Landon Donovan assists again in Everton upset of Chelsea! Has the classic Everton 2nd half surge to 8th place begun? Is Chelsea doomed?!
-Thierry Henry nets an extra time winner, but is thankfully headed back to America where his concentrated evil will do less harm.
-Clint Dempsey doesn’t technically score, but his stunning 30 yard strike bounces off the bar and into the back of the keeper to help Fulham earn 3 points!

Dempsey’s “goal” was ridiculous.
In other news, City is back on top of the table in an otherwise very uneventful game against Villa.
Also, there are rumors that Tevez wants to come back to CIty. I have no idea how I should feel about this.
If I were a city fan, I’d be upset. Tevez is the definition of batshit crazy and seems like he would disrupt the locker room with his geico antics
Tony Gonzalez? University of California?
Balotelli pulls off a lot of antics (and thank goodness his suspension is over), but I’m more worried about how that entire drama with his holdout, or whatever you would call it, will play out in the locker room. Nevertheless, if he can consistently spark the offense which has been a tad uninspired as of late, I wouldn’t mind…
Balotelli seems to do stupid shit that impacts Balotelli. Sure, that MAY hurt the team, but I’d say Tevez was more detrimental to the team the past 2 campaigns. Seriously, who gets homesick every season and thinks the cure is to move to Italy, France, or Spain? How is that closer to Argentina?
I feel bad if he’s getting bad advice from his agent/entourage. There’s no doubt that he has the skill to tear it up in the EPL, but he’s throwing his youth away by staying in Argentina playing golf

Harry for England?
He’s already talking about how he’d like to re-call Scholes to the England team should he be manager…
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/feb/12/harry-redknapp-paul-scholes-england
Harry Redknapp would attempt to entice Paul Scholes out of international retirement in order for him to start at Euro 2012 if, as expected, the 64-year-old becomes the England manager at the end of the domestic season. Redknapp also suggested that Steven Gerrard would be his England captain.
And I can imagine VdV, Modric, Ade, and a couple others jumping ship should he leave…
if he does go...
The Tottenham chairman, Daniel Levy, will demand a high price in compensation for Redknapp, whom he does not want to lose, and there is the prospect of a lengthy wrangle, but the chairman must begin to plan for the longer-term without Redknapp. Everton’s David Moyes features prominently on Levy’s list of potential successors, and he may seek to talk to José Mourinho, Guus Hiddink and Didier Deschamps.

Agree that racism in not ok but its kind of interesting that Evra has now alledgedly been racially abused by 1. Suarez 2. a Chelsea groundsman whom he attacked and was consequently charged with multiple counts of misconduct by the FA and 3. Members of the Senegal national team (Evra is Senegalese). Not sure how that last one is possible but whatevs. Racism is a major problem in the footy world and Suarez got his punishment so fuck him.

lulz, when you constantly switch players in and out of the starting lineup or change formations, the team takes a while to adjust. The longer you stay with the same lineup and formation, the better your results.
I usually run a narrow 4-1-2-1-2 so have zero width but I clog the middle and usually score a ton of goals. I try to make sure I have big centerbacks, quick fullbacks and a strong defensive midfielder. Up front, the key in that formation is a strong attacking midfielder laying behind the front 2. Unless the opposing team has a DM, he can run rampant.
Only negative is no wingers at all, I suually sell them immediately.

Donovan makes a difference, for sure. The injury list is starting to shrink – having Distin back was important. And, frankly, so was having Pienaar back as well. He was a HUGE loss when he went to Spurs, at least as much if not more so than Arteta, even though I’d say Arteta is more naturally talented.

Tony Gonzalez? University of California?
AVB seems to have had some great ideas… idea leaning less on Lampard, increasing Mata’s role, etc.
And some dumb ones… continuing to play David Luiz, insistence on high lines, Torres muchos minutos and not playing Sturridge whole games, etc.

Yes, the high line and the aging defense is something that should’ve been modified.
Luiz could play more of a Def MF role because he’s a liability back there.
Tony Gonzalez? University of California?
yeah, i could see him in a def MF role, something like a less vindictive and angry Pepe. plus, that would play to this strengths as he likes to get forward. but what would they do with mikel and essien?
"#caltrollgang" - RB
Essien is getting old and his recent injuries would worry me. I’d try to get as much in return for him as possible (target Russia or China).
I dont know what they have planned for Mikel, but they’ve been playing Romeu a lot more lately. As you said, Luiz at CDM would allow him to move forward and attack—something he really excels at.
Don’t get me started on Pepe…that ogre should have 3 times more bookings than he does. He gets to skate because he plays for Madrid.

I thought I read something that Real Madrid was basically backed by the Spanish crown and the banks. This is pretty crazy, and if true, is only surpassed by oil/Saudi/UAE money
Tony Gonzalez? University of California?
Both sides, to be fair, get a lot of informal government support – Real Madrid has sold their practice ground to the local authorities multiple times, for example. But getting government backing in Madrid > government backing in Catalonia. There’s a lot of corruption and paranoia about the corruption.

Of all the La Liga teams, I respect Valencia the most. They always develop great players—either poaching Real Madrid or Barcelona youth rejects or from their own academy (Mata, Jordi Alba, Banega, Parejo, Pablo H). They always seem to play in europe cups and always content for the 3rd or 4th spot despite the clear financial gap with the top 2.

Which means the SD loss doesn’t hurt as much since I think this was the Chipotle game, wasn’t it? Granted I don’t follow the computer rankings much, but I wouldn’t think many of the take this into account.

I think UNLV was the Chipolte game (I was there) but in fact, I think the guys actually had the flue not food poisoning.
Moot point, since the starters played pretty much full minutes in both games.
One of these days we’re going to get off the schnied with regards to recruiting depth, and that’s going to be just great.

Why the World Needs America
Would the end of the present American-dominated order have less dire consequences? A surprising number of American intellectuals, politicians and policy makers greet the prospect with equanimity. There is a general sense that the end of the era of American pre-eminence, if and when it comes, need not mean the end of the present international order, with its widespread freedom, unprecedented global prosperity (even amid the current economic crisis) and absence of war among the great powers.
American power may diminish, the political scientist G. John Ikenberry argues, but “the underlying foundations of the liberal international order will survive and thrive.” The commentator Fareed Zakaria believes that even as the balance shifts against the U.S., rising powers like China “will continue to live within the framework of the current international system.” And there are elements across the political spectrum—Republicans who call for retrenchment, Democrats who put their faith in international law and institutions—who don’t imagine that a “post-American world” would look very different from the American world.
If all of this sounds too good to be true, it is. The present world order was largely shaped by American power and reflects American interests and preferences. If the balance of power shifts in the direction of other nations, the world order will change to suit their interests and preferences. Nor can we assume that all the great powers in a post-American world would agree on the benefits of preserving the present order, or have the capacity to preserve it, even if they wanted to.
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
All very true, but the devil lurks in the details.
American power in the twentieth century came mostly by pushing out the Western European powers, though various dirty trick:
1) Coming to the rescue of victory in WWI. That prevented Britain and France to clamp down on German fascism, as Keynes pretended that France was wrong to free Eastern Europe from German speaking occupiers. OK, Keynes was financial manipulator of the UK.
2) allying itself, de facto, with Hitler after 1936, all the way to 1939, 1940. OK, Stalin did the same. That allowed to defeat France and Britain. And grab their empire, and nearly smother them with debts.
3) Allying itself with Stalin, giving him half of Europe, to make sure Europe would stay weak and meek..
4) Systematically undermining Britain and France after WWII (no help at Dien Bien Phu, support of various Islamists, all the way to Iran, Suez-Hungary affair, destroying France in Algeria, etc.)
So now what? The USA has to do more than being a military ally of a subservient EU. the EU and the USA have to be fully integrated itself. That means the USA has to completely integrate itself with France and Britain, and empowering those two as much as possible. the Libyan war was a good start.
Can I be a bit more precise? To start with weapons systems should be more integrated, which means the USA should buy more in Europe. Example: France should buy American drones, and the USA give up on the hopeless F35… And buy the superior “omnirole” fighter-bomber, the Rafale (with its integrated Mach5+ ramjet Meteor) , as India is doing…
China is great, for a number of reasons many similar to what made Hitler’s Reich so great. American plutocrats are cooperating with Chinese dictators, while the later are stealing massive quantities of intellectual properties. That, too, needs to be straightened out. By force.

Second the recommendation – the one by Dulles is really interesting, and there’s a tower from which you can watch planes coming in for a landing… which I don’t go to after watching a Saudi Air pilot have to abort a 747 landing because a Lufthansa pilot got bored of waiting and pulled his 777 onto the runway to head off.

Oh yeah, for sure. They have to go around and get back into the arrival pattern. Missed approaches at SFO go up through the San Bruno Gap and out to the Pacific Ocean at around Daly City, then turn south till they get to about Woodside, and get back into the arrival queue around Menlo Park near the Dumbarton Bridge.

When Firefox (the movie) came out back in 1982, my older cousin and I got all obsessed with the SR-71. I remember reading somewhere that when the plane was at supersonic, the outskin got so hot, you could poke a hole in it with a pencil. Now that I think about it, that seems absurd.
The titanium skin expands so much during flight that on the tarmac the gaps between the skin panels are so big that the fuel comes out. The JP-7 fuel they use can’t be ignited with a match or spark. I think they need real high temps to ignite it and they have these huge starter engines.
Jorge Gutierrez is "The guy with the hair plays with the flair"
Yeah, I heard this as well. It would leak fuel on the ground, but when it got up to speed the skin would expand and form a seal.

I can understand
how they can be replaced with other things. But you’re right and that leads back to the z-fest above and the American empire. I always thought it was kinda weird that they kept the U-2 and dropped the SR.
I also had irrational thoughts that the SR might somehow lead to an air-space fighter which would be endlessly cool. Another one of those things that in the face of drone tech seems like it doesn’t even belong in sci-fi any more.

My guess is that the scenario to use B2 would be like the Israeli bombing of a Syrian nuclear plant 2-3 years ago. In that case they were able to hack the ground radar and fly conventional fighter jets. There’s a scenario where the US isn’t able to hack the ground radar and yet doesn’t want to wage an all-out war, hence the need for stealth bombing.

Um...
A surprising number of American intellectuals, politicians and policy makers greet the prospect with equanimity.
There is nothing surprising about this. These are by and large the same people or of the same people who in the late 70s / early 80s refused to draw a distinction between the inherent moral differences between Soviet Communism and Western Democracy, as stewarded by America. If we just learned to get along better with the Soviets we would see we’re really all the same. Even then they were saying how America’s influence was waning. How wrong they were.
What a hot mess of an article, He argues against about 12 different straw men. But I do agree with this:
There was nothing inevitable about the world that was created after World War II. No divine providence or unfolding Hegelian dialectic required the triumph of democracy and capitalism, and there is no guarantee that their success will outlast the powerful nations that have fought for them. Democratic progress and liberal economics have been and can be reversed and undone. The ancient democracies of Greece and the republics of Rome and Venice all fell to more powerful forces or through their own failings. The evolving liberal economic order of Europe collapsed in the 1920s and 1930s. The better idea doesn’t have to win just because it is a better idea. It requires great powers to champion it.
Which people would be wise to remember. Wonder if he’s related to Donald Kagan.

Also
Here’s a good response to a longer-form article by Kagan last month in TNR (which coincidentally I had bookmarked last week but not yet gotten around to) from Will Wilkinson (ex-Cato libertarianish blogger at The Economist), that I think has a fair amount of merit:
It may be that the current global dispensation to some extent “reflects American principles and preferences”. If it does, however, it’s not because it “was built and preserved by American power”, except in a rather trivial sense. The American model of political economy has proved in many ways to be the world’s most successful. As the 20th century’s main rivals to capitalist liberal democracy failed, polities worldwide looked to the example of Western Europe and North America, and this led to a glad flowering of democracy and prosperity. But America didn’t cause the world’s numerous socialist and/or authoritarian experiments to fail. Those regimes faltered first and foremost because socialism and authoritarianism tend not to work out in the long run. And America didn’t compel aspiring first-worlders to try market economies and democratic governance. The nations of the world could see for themselves what was working and, in their own ways, have mostly followed suit.
If American power does wither, it will be due to America’s failure to maintain really first-rate institutions. The ensuing world order would indeed become, as Mr Kagan has it, one “reflecting the desires and the qualities of other world powers”. But that’s simply because the capitals of the world aren’t full of blithering dopes who wouldn’t know what to do if Brookings senior fellows didn’t tell them. Smart countries will want to emulate those that remain or have become first-rate.
…
The global public goods Mr Kagan rightly prizes—peace, stability, unimpeded trade routes—will be more, not less secure if the burden of their provision is more broadly distributed. And America is more likely to remain worth emulating were it to redirect some significant portion of the trillions spent maintaining its hegemony into more productive uses.

Many folks, myself included, stumble a bit on the fine details of sports-television contracts. We tend to focus on the pragmatic – as in, Is the game I want to watch on the channels I have available?
Well, the Pac-12 last week announced its new president of Pac-12 Enterprises, 54-year-old Gary Stevenson, whose first responsibility is building and overseeing the conference TV networks set to launch in a year. That led me to AJ Maestas, whose Chicago-based company, Navigate Marketing, does media research and measurement.
Maestas — a Washington grad, by the way – had a fairly jaw-dropping forecast on the future of the Pac-12 Networks, putting it in numbers that the most uninitiated of us can understand.
“Off the top of my head, four years from today, I would not be surprised if the Pac-12 schools saw $12-15 million distribution (each) from the Pac-12 Networks,” Maestas said. “The truth is, it could actually be 30-40 percent higher than that.”
That’s a thunderbolt.
You knew already of the 12-year, $3-billion ESPN-and-Fox deal engineered by Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott in the spring. When it begins to take place a year from now, that’s going to be worth roughly $21 million annually for each team in the league.
But the network, which Scott announced late in July, has been a fuzzier concept. I’d say $12-15 million brings a lot more clarity.

Are you a Rangers fan at all? Rumors floating about that they are officially going to file for Administration this week. Not a surprise but a pretty big story in the footy world.
Inspiring and completing since1997 since2010!
My feelings about Rangers are complicated. I can’t abide the sectarianism and the distortion of the Scottish league that both Old Firm teams create… but it’s also the club that my grandfather loved so much that we used to joke about scattering his ashes at Ibrox, and where he used to take my mother to games because he wasn’t going to let the minor detail of having a daughter stop him from indoctrinating the next generation – which in the late 40s and early 50s wasn’t typical. And I know there are plenty of fans like my cousin’s husband, who works with disadvantaged children, who will be gutted.
But… this has been a long time coming. As much as I loath to give any credit to the profession victims at Celtic, they sorted out their finances years ago. If the various halfwits who have been running Rangers had done their jobs properly instead of singing anti-Catholic songs at board meetings, this could have been avoided.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.
Wont be the last big name team to do this in the near future, I suspect. I also wonder if this will bring them back to the pack of the 2nd tier Scottish teams like Hearts and Hibs, at least in the short term.

No, probably not the only big team. There’s an argument to be made that the Scottish league is sort of like the canary in the coalmine for the EPL – the television money disappeared from Scottish football and it all went to hell. The fact that it’s now become a bargain shopping zone for English clubs is telling. If the cash drops out of English television contract, it’s going to get ugly fast.
As for where they would fall back to… the SFA will probably engineer some kind of solution that keeps the club in existence and in the Scottish Premiere League – what money they get largely depends on having a certain number of Old Firm games per season, because that’s the money makers for overseas rights. Much as plenty of Celtic supporters would like to have the SPL to themselves, I can’t see that being realistic.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.
B-b-b-but what about EUFA’s Financial Fairplay? Surely, that will save all European teams from themselves?!

I didn’t read it closely, but it looks like he did but indirectly – instead of buying the club and then putting the debt on the clubs’ books, he just skipped directly to putting the debt on the books. Given that he thought no-one would notice he had been barred from running a company for seven years because of financial irregularities, I suspect he thought that it was all clever and subtle as opposed to a really stupid idea.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.
It seems like such a DANGEROUS move for any club/franchise. Aside from ManU, I’m unaware of any successful leveraged takeovers with the aforementioned being still burdened by the debt. They’ve been extremely fortunate that their brand name and continued success has handcuffed them greatly

It’s a bad idea even when there’s no sale involved. Everton has mortgaged future television revenue which seemed like a bad idea indeed 6 weeks ago when they were in particular trouble.

Piggyback Bandit!
The man who nicknamed himself the "Piggyback Bandit" due to his affection for jumping on the backs of high school athletes has been spotted in the Fargo-Moorhead area.
Sherwin Shayegan, 28, has been banned from all North Dakota high school sporting events after attempting to get piggyback rides from students at three high school games in Bismarck last weekend, according to KXMB-CBS12 in Bismarck.
Concordia Sports Information Director Jim Cella said Shayegan was "definitely the guy" coaches noticed handing water to players at Wednesday’s men’s basketball game against St. Olaf College at Memorial Auditorium.
Remember Sinead O’Connor?
OUTSIDE Sinead O’Connor’s whitewashed home here, on a windswept beachfront overlooking the misty Irish Sea, there are two talismans. One, a knee-high statue of the Virgin Mary stands with her arms beatifically spread, silently welcoming visitors. The other, a crudely taped-up sign, written so emphatically in ballpoint that the paper is almost torn through, is directed at the reporters who have besieged the singer, her four children, three dogs and a cat in recent weeks. It reads: "Dearest loving hacks. This is your quote: Rock ’n’ Roll!"
When Ms. O’Connor opened the door on a recent afternoon, wearing a black T-shirt that read "Property of Jesus" under a long, black leather coat, a wool hat pulled down low over her blazing eyes, she sounded weary. "I’m very physically tired in a way that I’ve never been in my life," she explained. "It’s almost like my blood feels like lead."
The trouble began, she said, when she decided that after more than two decades in the news — most memorably for tearing up a picture of the pope on "Saturday Night Live" in 1992 to protest child abuse in the Catholic Church — she wouldn’t let the world "stop me being me," or deny herself the instant pleasures of the Internet.
I think her 2-month marriage has been on and off for the past 2 months…

Report: Iggles to franchise THA1
The Philadelphia Inquirer, citing unnamed sources, reported Sunday that the Eagles will use their franchise tag on Jackson if they can’t reach a long-term deal with him before March 5, the deadline to use the tag on free agents. The first day teams can issue a franchise tender is Feb. 20.
If Jackson plays the 2012 season under a franchise tender, he would be paid about $9.5 million for the season, the newspaper reported. The Eagles could also trade Jackson after it uses the tag on the receiver.

No, I need to wear them again tomorrow morning.
Actually my contacts CAN be slept in (they’re actually 30 day continuous wear ones) but its just a weird feeling waking up and being able to see immediately.
Even though you can wear them overnight, you should never do so. FDA approval does not mean good idea. Risk of infection goes WAY up, and you also run the risk of hurting your orbs to the point that you will never again be able to wear contacts. So always always always take out your lenses before sleepytime.

My optometrist (yay go UCB school of opt!) generally agrees with this appraisal. I remember when they were “30 day lenses”, then it was “take them out once a week or so” then pretty soon it was “take them out every night”.
That said, I think you’ll survive one night if you have to. No backup glasses I guess? I’m pretty paranoid (and almost literally blind without correctives).

pro bowl article with mention of aaron rodgers and twilight
The Pro Bowl is the pimple on an otherwise unblemished cheek of the homecoming queen known as the N.F.L. schedule … Aaron Rodgers said after the game that some players "embarrassed themselves" by not putting any effort into the game. The remarks made Rodgers sound very passionate and incredibly naïve: putting effort into the Pro Bowl is like performing extra research to accurately fill out a customer satisfaction survey.
If the N.F.L. cribbed some ideas from the other leagues, it could spruce up the Pro Bowl and make it something more than the last mile marker before the exit for the Super Bowl … The fantasy draft format used by the N.H.L. is brilliant, and the N.F.L. should adopt it. Braylon Edwards and Brandon Jacobs could be the captains, and a battle between Team Edwards and Team Jacobs might confuse millions of teenage girls and middle-aged women into giving the Pro Bowl a look.

I never think there is anything wrong with that. If someone of your nationality excels I can totally see why that would excite people. Maybe not “asian” but if he is of your nationality. (Like I wouldn’t expect a Korean to root for a Japanese guy because of shared “Asian-ness”).
I don’t have a problem with Asians rooting for Lin. I have a problem with people expecting me to root for lin, or being disappointed that I don’t root for Lin, just because I’m Asian.

No, he wouldn’t. OTOH, Jackie Robinson got plenty of pub, and is was a generational icon for African Americans. I’m not saying Lin is in any way comparable to Jackie Robinson in terms of stature or importance or talent or whatever, but he is at least a little bit of a pioneer, so it’s not surprising that people who share his ethnic background want to see him succeed.

My girlfriend, her brother and I burst out laughing as more of a reaction from the weekend-long gushing and hype train that was driven by ESPN/FaceBook/Twitter worlds. It was definitely a startling change of pace from the rest of the media.
It’s not Lin’s fault just like it’s not Tebow’s fault. I just find it a tad frustrating that their stories are driven BECAUSE Lin is Chinese and BECAUSE Tebow in Christian more so than their production on the court/field. When the hype train gains too much speed, I personally get turned off of things I would normally totally appreciate.

Movie Review

So I watched this movie this weekend, and I have to say that even though I enjoyed it, I was somewhat disappointed. The only positive is it made me want to re-visit Paris, soon, but compared to Woody’s recent good movies, it was rather weak. Can’t fathom why it’s nominated for best picture.
Am I known as Cugel the Clever for nothing?
i went to it having no effing idea what it was about, i was not pleased and not that entertained. i think if i’d known something about it i would’ve liked it more.
"#caltrollgang" - RB
I disagree with the principle that you have to have any additional background information on the movie to enjoy it. If the movie can’t entertain me within the context of its own boundaries, then it’s not a good movie. You made the movie, you need to bring the audience along.
Cal: Bears with Books.
umm, i think it would’ve helped to have SOME context. like, when the movie started, i expected a romantic comedy, then it took a wild departure and i was like “huh?”.
"#caltrollgang" - RB
Hmmmm…. I see your point, but you can carry this too far. I think most movies that are set in an historical framework are going to more enjoyable if you’re familiar with the period (at least if the movie is good)

Restaurant Review, Squeeze In
In Truckee. Stopped by on the way back from the Tahoe wedding (which was amazing and beautiful and I swear I only teared up a dozen times). and Aside from the super long wait, it was really good food. Best French Dip I’ve had and I have the other half to enjoy for today’s lunch. the lemonade and mimosa were average. Rags had a mushroom burger which he enjoyed. So, I’d go there again.

Ceremony was outdoors, and the snow was drifting softly. Everyone was covered in snowflakes :)
Party party was indoors. We cleaned out their Whiskey & Gin within 2 hours.
Cal: Bears with Books.
I question the sanity of people having their wedding in the snow. Clearly it went ok but wasn’t it really cold? Wouldn’t you clean out the whiskey and gin before trudging through the snow for a ceremony that probably lasted longer than 30 seconds?
Of course, I can’t talk. My wedding was outside, in Texas, in last May. It was 95 degrees and my relatives (all fromn the Bay Area) thought I was an asshole for doing that.

There was a pre-ceremony selection of hot-tea, hot cider, hot chocolate (and alcohol to match). The wedding party had scarves and snow boots, and I feel pretty certain everyone was well warned before hand. So yes, we were cold, and my toes especially were cold, but I wouldn’t have changed it.

She got into it as part of after school day care at age 5. We put her in a program for gymnastics and tumbling and she immediately gravitated to cheer (which was also at that gym) because she loves dance. She did competitive club cheer from 5 to13, evetually getting to a pretty high level before quitting because of the pounding her body was taking. She was growing really fast at 12-13 (she’s 5’9" now) so the aches and pains really wore her down. So she quit and just did school cheer in 8th grade and now will do as a 10th grader (Frosh aren’t allowed to cheer at her high school).

The girls on this team were primarily 11-13. I was amazed at how good they were but they were the best team in the nation that year (there are websites that track this shit!).
Also, please note the music and enduring that for 7 hours a day. This is why I proclaimed it a fate worse than death to go to these shows.

so to answer your question, I suppose it indirectly had to do with being in Texas. There are tons of club cheer gyms here (at least 8, probably more in Austin alone). Not sure but I dont think CA has nearly the ratio that exists here.

My brother got married in a state park. Super cheap. The reception was right there where the wedding itself was, so no additional cost.
They bought all the food, which is $$$$$, but is cheaper I think than if you go with a sit down per person cost.
He paid people from one of the student groups at cal that he was a part of to cook the food etc etc etc.
The drinks consisted of a few kegs.
Thats a way to keep costs super low and maximize hela people

Man I wish I could agree, and generally I’m one to like burgers, but really didn’t like what I got there. I got the classic Squeeze Cheese, but the burger was made with totally average, mostly unflavorful ingredients, and they just piled a shitton of cheese for that skirt thingy. I could see how it could taste good, but I think they overcooked the cheese and it was like trying to eat a piece of 6″×8″ piece of cheese with literally the texture of cardboard on a burger. Not good. Maybe it’s because I went to the new West Sac location instead of the original one.

N-Judah shutting down weekend service for 6 weeks
Weekend service for the N-Judah is set to be cut for six weekends starting Feb. 24, the San Francisco Metropolitan Transportation Agency announced.
The service shutdown on the city’s most-used line will allow for construction at two improvement projects at Church Street and Duboce Avenue and at Carl Street.

I agree....mind escapery is good
I read a cool book on the Vietnam War that included a POW’s story, and he kept his mind sharp by creating detailed visions in his mind. Like he planned out the house he wanted to build in his head, the plans, and then visualized each task as it would need to happen. Like digging the foundation, pouring the footing… etc.

MySpace lives? Site signs up 1 million new users in a month
Can MySpace become culturally relevant again?
It’s still too soon to tell, but Tim and Chris Vanderhook, the two young investors who bought the faded social networking site from News Corp. in June 2011 now have some semi-solid reason to hope.
On Monday morning, MySpace announced that it had over 1 million new sign-ups in the last 30 days. The company also said MySpace.com is receiving an average of 40,000 new registrations daily.
And more good news: Traffic to the site was up in January for the first time in a year, according to a report in the New York Times.
All very promising, right? Well, sort of. The New York Times report also noted that MySpace’s traffic was down almost a quarter from when the Vanderhooks bought the site.
Still, the numbers show that there may be life yet in a site that many had written off as all but dead — including News Corp. which paid $580 million for MySpace in 2005, and then sold it for $35 million in 2011, long after Facebook had won the social networking battle.
Ryan Reynolds was the SIARPC on Top Gear last night. That bastard is actually charming and likeable.

This explains why people who depend on the safety net vote Republican and curse welfare recipients: They feel that their economic problems are purely the result of liberal policies designed purely to reward ungrateful “welfare queens,” so they might as well take a little of back for themselves. BART gets some $$$ to get to San Jose
The Federal Transit Administration will announce Tuesday that $150 million is being given to the BART extension to the South Bay — $20 million more than expected.
“This is great news for the BART project,” said Michael Burns, general manager of the Valley Transportation Authority, which will oversee construction of the 10-mile, $2.1 billion line from Fremont to the Berryessa area of San Jose. “It reinforces our partnership with the federal government to bring major public transportation infrastructure to Silicon Valley.”
This will be the first installment on a $900 million pledge to BART by the Department of Transportation as part of money set aside for new rail projects across the country.

We’re looking at the top individual performances in the Pac-12 in 2011.
Up next: Tevin McDonald’s pick-three.
Who & against whom? UCLA’s redshirt freshman safety helped the Bruins rebound from the 48-12 debacle in the desert at Arizona just one week before by leading a defensive charge against Cal.
The numbers: McDonald did in one day what a lot of college football players accomplish in a career. He picked off Cal quarterback Zach Maynard three times to help the Bruins to a 31-14 win. Three interceptions in one game matches a UCLA school record.
A closer look: Not that UCLA’s cup was ever overflowing with confidence this season. But it hit an all-time low following the embarrassing loss to Arizona the week before. Cue McDonald and his secondary hat trick. More importantly, the Bruins didn’t let his efforts go to waste. All three interceptions resulted in points — two touchdowns and a field goal. Cal had five turnovers on the day and 24 of UCLA’s 31 points came off of Cal mistakes. Two of McDonald’s interceptions came in the fourth quarter. Holding on to a 17-14 lead early in the fourth, McDonald grabbed his second pick of the game, which set up a 20-yard Derrick Coleman run. Later in the fourth, he got his third interception just outside the UCLA red zone, which the Bruins turned around and marched 83 yards to close out the win.

C-USA and Mountain West are dead; will form new super-conference together.
http://brett-mcmurphy.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/29532522/34822810
The institutions from Conference USA and the Mountain West are dissolving both leagues to create their own conference, college football industry sources told CBSSports.com.
The new conference will consist of 18 to 24 members and start in the 2013-14 academic year. It would not only have a conference championship football game, but also conference semifinals. Conference USA and the Mountain West would continue as is for the 2012-13 season.
The reason that the institutions are dissolving and forming their own league and not just merging is for legal reasons, sources said.
Feels bad, man.

i think vj won’t be the same receiver for the niners due to age and smith throwing him passes and not rivers.
not a 49ers fan, but i wonder if THA1 is the best one here… walker and VD will catch a bunch of balls over the middle so THA1 won’t necessarily have to. he can stretch the field vertically?

Poor money management Oaktown
I can’t wait till Seymour breaks down so we can laugh at that trade as well.
Kansas City Salary-cap situation: $62.995 million under. Scott Pioli’s Chiefs’ has always been in good cap shape. He has been criticized for not doing much, though. Pioli has concentrated on role players. Maybe this is the year he makes a huge splash. Because of the cap room there is no reason the Chiefs can’t keep both Dwayne Bowe and Brandon Carr.
Oakland Salary-cap situation: $11 million over. The Raiders are one of four teams still over the cap. They will easily get under the cap, but the question is how much room will they clear up? They will need to do some things in free agency, though, because of their lack of draft picks. I think, in the end, the Raiders will be able to pick up some quality players in free agency.

To be honest I’d rather have a franchise with some balls who is unwilling to let money be the reason for inaction. Clark Hunt is a cheap douche living in his father’s footsteps trying to milk every penny out of KC so he can beef up his lame MLS team.

A's to sign someone?
A’s to sign Cuban OF Yoenis Cespedes
http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7570918/yoenis-cespedes-agrees-deal-oakland-athletics-sources-say
Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes has agreed to a four-year, $36 million deal with the Oakland Athletics.
The Miami Marlins also bid $36 million for Cespedes. But their offer was over six years, not four, one source familiar with the Cespedes negotiations told ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark. The Marlins weren’t interested in a deal shorter than six years, an executive who spoke with the team told ESPN.com.
Cespedes can sign Monday after receiving his unblocking license from the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, his agent, Adam Katz, told ESPN.com’s Stark.
The outfielder needed the clearance because he is a Cuban national who has established residency in another country after defecting.
“At the end of the day with all these big free agents, it comes down to the total package,” Katz said. “Sure, money and the economic package had something to do with it. But it’s also about all the surrounding circumstances. And basically, this was a player who felt like this club wanted him more than anybody else.”
Once Cespedes receives his worker’s visa he is free to show up for spring training and play for the A’s. The contract allows him to become a free agent after the fourth year instead of having to wait six, Katz said.
Cespedes will receive $6.5 million in his first year, $8.5 million in his second year and $10.5 million in each of the last two years of the deal.
The deal would make the 26-year-old Cespedes the highest-paid player on Oakland’s roster this season before he plays a major league game. The next-highest salary belongs to outfielder Coco Crisp at $6 million.
Things to ask about Yoenis Cespedes
http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/20779/things-to-ask-about-yoenis-cespedes
1. Why go to Oakland? After all, as Gertrude Stein said in reference to Oakland, "There is no there there," and with the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels ruling the roost, why would Cespedes freely choose to go to a second-division club? Because of the money, and here in the middle of February there isn’t a lot of unspent cash left floating around in the market. At this time of year, a lot of teams are publicly asserting they’re tapped out or already at or over budget. To the surprise of many, the A’s actually had the money to spend, but nobody expected them to jump in, especially when they’re bobbing around that bright line between being cheap and being on the union’s list of baddies when it comes to clubs potentially not spending their revenue-sharing cash on payroll.
His coming to Oakland might seem stranger still in light of his description as a five-tool center fielder, since the team’s one major financial commitment this winter was to its veteran center fielder, Coco Crisp, for two years guaranteed at $13 million, with a 2014 club option for $7.5 million (with a $1 million buyout). Whatever you want to say about Crisp’s virtues, a large chunk of his value is tied up in his glove — he won’t be an asset to a big league lineup playing regularly in a corner.
Cespedes is 26 years old, a guy smack-dab in the middle of his expected peak seasons, and he’s supposed to be good to go as a center fielder. He may have tied a single-season record for homers in Cuba, but when Dan Szymborski has projected him in a neutral park he’s topped out around 27 homers and a .445 SLG, which is nice, but the Coliseum is anything but a neutral park. Per Baseball Info Solutions’ three-year park factors, Oakland’s rating for homers gets scaled to 83 (with 100 representing average), but 91 for right-handed hitters. So take even that translation of Cespedes’ performance down a few pegs, and you have a great bat for a regular in center field, but maybe not so much in right.
CESPANSITY!

Spring training!
Mariners open spring training in Arizona

PEORIA, Ariz. — Spring training is officially under way with Seattle’s pitchers and catchers holding their first workout.
The center of attention for the brief Sunday morning session under a bright blue sky at the Peoria Sports Complex was the team’s newest import from Japan.
Some 30 Japanese reporters and photographers chronicled every move Sunday by Hisashi Iwakuma as he jogged lightly, then fielded some balls off the mound.
Right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma did a small amount of running and a little defensive work. He will throw off the mound for the first time on Monday.

‘Speed Freak’ killer’s disclosures bring both peace and turmoil
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-serialkiller-20120213,0,2221324.story
Reporting from Linden, Calif.— The abandoned well sits off a country road in a region of open pastures and hills stamped with oak tree silhouettes.
John Ferreira, 38, remembers driving Flood Road in high school. It’s eerie, he said, to think it’s now blocked off to all but the few families who have homes on the road as authorities search for more bodies.
The question on most minds in this rural area east of Stockton is how many victims they will eventually find.
On Sunday, for the second day in a row, authorities said they discovered bones, believed to be human, near the well. They also discovered a pair of sandals, a pair of tennis shoes, engraved jewelry and a woman’s purse in an area long rumored to hold a mass grave.
A map drawn by Wesley Shermantine, 45, a convicted serial killer who spilled his secrets in exchange for a promise of cash from a bounty hunter, labels two wells on the old cattle ranch “Loren’s Boneyard.”
Shermantine and Loren Herzog were arrested in 1999 for a series of murders known as the “Speed Freak” killings, which may have spanned more than 15 years and claimed an unknown number of victims.
