Cal Women's Basketball vs. USC: Preview + Gamethread

Cal’s critical three game stretch is two thirds over, and so far so good. In fact, Cal has been so good at taking care of business and USC has been on such a slump that this game no longer seems any more important than any other game left on the schedule. Heck, a road trip to Corvallis seems scarier!
Of course, this game still matters for a few reasons. Firstly, USC is still in the RPI top 50 and is likely to stay there, so it’s still a valuable resume win. Secondly, Cal needs to win every game they should win to maximize their tournament seed.
And perhaps most importantly, this is Cal’s chance to avenge their only blowout loss of the season. Only one team has beaten Cal by more than 5 points, and that was USC by 20. Taking it to the Trojans would send a powerful message about how much the Bears have improved. Since that loss to USC the Bears have won 9 games by an average margin of 12 points, with just one overtime loss to Stanford mixed in. I don’t know how much stock the selection committee puts into ‘finishing strong’ but Cal is in position to finish very strongly. Beating USC and showing improvement from the first half of the season has to be a part of that.

But of course it wasn’t just 3 point shooting that doomed the Bears against USC. Interior defense was a big problem. Cassie Harberts and Christina Marinacci both went for season highs in scoring, combining for 46 points on 13-23 shooting while also managing 15 rebounds. Cal’s posts need to go out and prove that they aren’t going to be outplayed by anybody in this conference and dominate on both ends accordingly.

Can I just say that I don't think we are a very good team.
I have been sitting here watching the last 10 minutes and we have made tons of turnovers, can’t hit outside shots, can’t pick up ball off a simple pick at the top (hedge). I mean, if Monty were coaching this team, we’d be up by 35.
that said
we have incredible talent, and just got the luckiest life line I have seen in a loooong time.
Apparently they got her off in time, so at least they were paying enough attention… if only just enough :)

LIndsay had her back turned, as did the rest of the staff. The players kind of pulled her off but they weren’t sure. To be honest, she’s kind of gotten schooled by Coop tonight.

he brings it to every thread. he’s the salary_cap of basketball.
sorry, he was acting like a douche.
He’s not a troll. I think he tends to have a negative perspective, but he seems to be posting in good faith and he’s been participating here for a long time. He’s generally amenable to reason, even if he’s got a critical slant. “Acting like a douche” is marginally better than straight up calling someone a douche, but calling other commenters names is against the guidelines, and you know that, man. If you disagree with him, explain why he’s wrong or ignore him.

Thanks Atom.
Fiat has gone after me in the past.
A number of folks don’t like my critical posts, but he’s the only one to resort to name calling.
That said, the negativeness started with the really poor play on the court I observed over the final 10 minutes. You won’t see anything near resembling that from Uconn or Stanford. We almost have the players to match that level, but are otherwise so so far away. I was shocked by what I saw. Sorry….
if the worse you get called is “douche” you’re doing OK. I apologize. Shouldn’t have called you a name. and of course it gives you an out and detracts from what are valid points.
You have a proclivity for posting in losses or games where we don’t play well. As I said, like salary_cap, you really don’t fool me.
was I trying to fool you?
ha ha. Fiat… I don’t get your point.
Do you just want a bunch of “Cal is the best” type posts?
Why is it not okay to write about things that don’t go well on the floor?
I’m just a Monday morning QB.
we agree on your last point. I apologize for the harshness of calling you a douche. That was clearly waaaay over the line.
Carry on.
Thank you.
I think you are just bummed that we lost.
And the last time we met like this, it happened then, too.
A sad coincidence.
By the way. Nobody ever calls me a douche or anything near that. People pretty much like me a lot. I’m often the life of the party because I bring positive cheer and voice my insightful opinions.
The bummer about internet blog posting is that everyone is anonymous and there is no personality behind the words. This leads to either an incomplete communication cycle, and people post things they wouldn’t normally say in public.
Yes. I agree. If only we knew who each other was…. If only people knew who we were…
I can assure you, if we were at Pappy’s after the game and you said what you said, my response would be “you’re a being a douche…” But I am guessing if CoachG were in that bar you may not be saying to her what you said on here… just a guess.
You’re right. I wouldn’t start a conversation with coach by saying her team played like high schoolers and suggesting that she’s not teaching them any fundamentals.
But if I were making such comments, I see I am not alone. I just read many similar observations at bearinsider. These are not nasty comments, fiat. You want to tell the entire pappy’s bar they are douches?
Get real. You have as much nastiness as me. The difference is my criticism is saved for the product on the court. Yours, you go after people who point out that the emperor has no clothes. Which is worse?
Otherwise, just tell me where I’m out of line.
You sound like a parent protecting their kid. If that’s the case, I’d understand.
Tom’s tendency is to quickly jump on the negative, and do it with a harsh tone.
Fiat reflexively takes a lot of criticism as an affront to the Golden Bear nation. (I’ve been on the receiving end, and I like to think my entire body of posting has been pretty balanced.)
I’d respectfully suggest movement away from those extremes for both might be beneficial. [slowly backs away before bar fight breaks out]
nah, you’re right. I was wrong. I should not have called him a douche. It’s a subtle thing but i could have said “dude, you’re acting like a douche…” which I guess still wouldn’t be acceptable. I find it odd what we take exception to on here… it’s a very wide and very grey area.
To me the crux of the issue is what Tom pointed out himself… that he would not have made the comments he made on here IRL. As everyone knows I am not a big fan of hiding behind internet anonymity. So to me that’s a pretty good standard to use when posting; “would I say this if everyone knew who I was and I was out in public?”
Do we need to get the Hit Squad involved here? Ididnt notice this situation unfolding. I respect both fiatlux and concord tom and dont want a huge fight to break out.

I don’t think so… this seems like a perfectly reasonable conversation to me. Plus, I already said I was wrong.
Sounds good. Appreciate everything resolving itself here.

Thanks, Twist.
Dear Fiat: I would prefer that you tell me what you don’t like about my posts, rather than calling me a douche or saying that I am acting like a douche. The word Douche does not convey what it is you are really trying to say, so be specific about what you don’t like and what you’d rather hear. I can deal with that – I can’t do anything with “Douche”. At the end, after we have exchanged thoughts on a matter, we can either agree, or agree to disagree. Thank you.
I appreciate Reef and Atoms comments above.
See you Thursday.
But over the entire game,
Cal had 13 TOs (including 5 by Layshia and a mere 3 from Brittany), and shot 44% 3s. How I wish the FTs had been more—successful.
But OK, that’s it, that’s enough—NO MORE VERY TIGHT LOSSES. (No loose losses, either!) And may they slaughter USC at the tournament.
I’m watching with the sound off. The play that sent it into overtime, was there an issue with the number of Cal players on the court?

I can’t say I’m surprised. I started seeing all kinds of problems a long time ago. Very sloppy game. I think Coach G has a ton of work to do. Teaching them basic things about taking care of the ball, working to get good shots, and playing proper defense. Yes, USC hit some good outside shots (which we can’t do) but they got some layups where there were lanes given, no help defense, and shooters simply left open. Wow.
I’m completely impressed with the talent, but that was a really bad exhibition of basketball by Coach G’s team.
Monty is the opposite of her.
Monty has a 34 years of experience as a head coach. Lindsay has 4. Have some perspective, dude.

Yeah, good point. It wasn’t lost on me.
I merely point it out to highlight how much coaching matters.
I often come on these posts talking about the importance of RECRUITING, and I diss Monty for his lack thereof. A friend told me years ago that winning in college hoops is something like 70% recruiting and only 30% x and o coaching. Well, Monty is the best at coaching on the floor, but only half full in recruiting – which makes his efforts (at least so far at Cal) a continual uphill battle.
However, tonight’s display tells me that the formula might be flipped: 30% recruiting and 70% x’s and o’s. I wouldn’t have thought we could struggle in so many little facets of the game.
I’m not trying to bust out anyone – I’m a basketball fan, and a Cal basketball fan. I’m observant and think about what I see. Monty has just earned more praise from me in future posts because I learned a few things tonight. I appreciate the little things more. Like, an entry pass into the post. Simple. Done. Not thrown into the defenders arms. Twice.
Well, we’re not quite at the level of UConn or stanfurd yet, sure. But like, you’re complaining that we’re not the best two programs in the country. Obviously that’s what we aspire to but it’s not going to happen overnight. We have talented players but they’re young. They have a bit of growing up to do yet. I’m sure Coach Gottlieb will have plenty of lessons to draw from tonight, and they’ll be a better team in the future because of it. They’re smart and talented young players, as is Coach G as a coach. Be patient.

She’s also got a lot less experience than Coop. I don’t follow much women’s hoop, so I don’t have any idea about his track record in college or the WNBA, but I thought he did some good things tonight, working with less talent on the road.
Just looked it up, and apparently Coop was winning WNBA championships while Lindsay was just starting her coaching career. I can’t quite tell what he’s done at SC relative to the talent he’s had, but I think it’s fair to say Lindsay deserves time to grow into it.
I like her. Seems like she’s got brains and spunk.
Thanks for those reasonable words.
I prefer this site to the Bear Insider because there is (usually) less bitching and negativity here, less of that “They lost, they suck, they’re doomed, fulminate, fulminate” attitude so frequent among Old Blues with high standards and faulty memories. (I daresay that as freshmen, they, too, were inconsistent twerps—I certainly was.) Cal WBB is a work in progress, and I think it’s a pretty good one. They may screw up, but they don’t give up.
Random OT
Coach Tedford just made the second post to his Twitter account in three years, lamenting the death of Whitney Houston.
That amused me.
When I was younger, I used to plead to my dad “Can’t we just ‘hang out’?” He was always wanting to talk about substantive topics and it was just relentless and tiring. I wanted to focus on the “friendship” part of our relationship.
Some months later he got us 49er tickets and halfway thru the game he looks at me and asks, “So, Tom, are we just ‘hanging out’?”
Talk about awkward! My mental response was, “Uh, we WERE….”
Maybe JT should stick to the “I just made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich – yum” type posts.
I just took it more as he’s trying to be more active on twitter in general (it was the news of the day). It’s not like he’s mourning the death of Tupac or something…

I don’t hate it – I just don’t care enough, and I am trying to pick and choose my time wasting carefully.
Plus, it is a thread for a game between Cal and USC – and the level of vitriol was, interestingly, lower than for the men’s sports. Maybe Fiatlux is right and reverse sexism is rampant.
