National Signing Day 2012: Kenny Lawler, Bryce Treggs, Raymond Ford Heading To Cal
Into the afternoon we go. We've gotten most of the Bears we thought we'd get. Who's joining them?
No one yet.
Markuss Eligwe - Stuck with Florida State. Not a huge surprise
Christo Kourtzidis - Stuck with Florida State. He was 50-50, and we definitely could have used him. Cal went 0/4 on the big California tight ends of this class.
Zach Hoffpauir - Committed to Furd. Missed out on our op two safety targets. Ouch.
Kenny Walker - Officially flipped from Cal to UCLA.
So the Bears are going to fall well short of their targeted 27-28 recruits they wanted to land. Currently Cal has 14 commits, plus Jordan Morgan from last year, meaning we still have around a dozen slots are still available. No chance of filling them all.
Who does that leave? Well, there are a few more making decisions today. Here's the list below.
Here's the announcements to watch out for.
2 PM: Aziz Shittu (DT, Buhach Colony, Atwater, CA): Top four of Stanford, UCLA, USC, and Cal, and the Cardinal appear to be the favorite.
3-5 PM: Announcements can be viewed on FoxSportsWest.com
Brandon Beaver (DB, Dominguez, Compton, CA): Top three of Washington, Utah, and Cal, with the Huskies still looking like a narrow favorite.
Kenny Lawler (WR, Upland, Upland, CA): Top three of Oregon State, Washington State and Cal. No idea where we go from here.
Bryce Treggs (WR, St. John Bosco, Bellfower, CA): Cal commit and likely to stay that way, but still looking at UCLA or USC.
5:15 PM: Announcement can be viewed on CBSLA.com
Raymond Ford (DB, Junipero Serra, Gardena, CA): Top 3 of Washington State, Utah and Cal.
Here's to hoping we at least finish out National Signing Day with a flourish. GO BEARS!

Furd now has the best O-line class in the country, perhaps the best O-line class in recent memory. They could have the best class in the Pac-12, period.
We’ve awoken a sleeping giant.
We haven't done anything
the current 49ers coach did that. It’s really no different than what Tedford did with Cal in 2001 and Rodgers.

Sure
but Cal’s recruiting got a lot better after Tedford came on board. Think of the RBs and skills position players got (i.e. DeSean). Also, Cal’s O-line recruits this year are pretty decent.

It is kind of scary, I really hope this doesn’t last much longer. Nothing like a few average to below average seasons to help cool kids off from a school.
You said they were a sleeping giant, care to elaborate why you feel that way?
National recruiting base. Wealthy donors. Private endowment. Lots of resources to be a good football school if they wanted to be.

Their fan base isn’t numerous, but some of those jokers have biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig money.
sure
but it’s not just a few donors, you need an all out commitment by the University. Tedford is somewhat fighting that at Cal.

$
Endowment size isn’t a perfect indicator with the wealth of the donor base, but it’s correlated. Stanford’s endowment was $16.5b as of 2011. The entire UC system’s was $6.3b.

i hate greg easterbrook (what an effin blowhard) but i like what he says about endowments – why give a huge sum of money to the furd, harvard, etc that have a shitload? an equivalent gift elsewhere can do so much more good.

Build your own press release... here's one quote from each of the previous years' signing classes
We have upgraded our athleticism throughout the entire recruiting class, especially on the offensive line.
We are extremely happy with the overall quality of this group, both in terms of talent and character.
It is our goal to take Cal football to the next level and we believe this new group can help us attain that goal.
They have great character. We are proud of their academic achievements as well as their athletic accomplishments.
We are looking forward to them bringing the same success that they have had on the field, as well as in the classroom, to our program.
“We feel great about our corps of receivers,” Tedford said. “They all have good size and athleticism and they should all have the opportunity to make early contributions to our program.”
We also believe they have what it takes to succeed as student-athletes at the University of California.
We’re looking forward to this group coming in and being able to compete early to make contributions to next year’s team.
We feel like the members of this class will be able to fill some of the needs we have on both sides of the ball in an expedient fashion.

I feel fine with this class. I am just saying that after Treggs and Ford we really aren’t expecting anyone else at this point. Well possibly Diggs but we are a long shot and probably just a hat on the table for him.
Unfortunately all the big name guys who we were in the running for picked somone else today, it happens.
Yeah, it happens. It still doesn’t stop you from asking:
Why does it happen?
Why would it happen to us?
Why would all these kids want to go to other schools that aren’t obviously better?
What the hell?

Honestly, I have no idea why the hell they went elsewhere and am not going to speculate. No point in dwelling on it. It won’t change anything.
I guess not, but I feel like getting a good handle on it will help us in future recruiting battles later on down the line.
"i, for one, welcome our new atomic overlords" - GoldBlooded
by atomsareenough on Feb 1, 2012 3:37 PM PST up reply actions
Agreed
But I think this year will prove to be an anomaly with the main recruiter for a lot of these guys leaving two weeks before LOI day and then negatively recruiting against Cal. I don’t think that happens every year.
That’s how I feel as well. Let’s wait and see what happens next recruiting cycle.
I still feel AAE is correct that Tedford and staff should sit down and learn from this experience but I think this is more of an anomaly and the result of losing two coaches so close to LOI day.
I just hope that the coaches we have prove to be close to the level of To$h’s abilities. We really were headed for a TOP 5 class before he blew it all up. I mean, if we can get even top TEN on a regular basis, that would really change the game.
"i, for one, welcome our new atomic overlords" - GoldBlooded
by atomsareenough on Feb 1, 2012 3:43 PM PST up reply actions
Well, Tosh was named top recruiter in the whole COUNTRY a year ago, so hoping for multiple coaches to be close to that level isn’t realistic. Also, we gotta to start performing better on the field. Look at Stanford’s class as well as our classes after 2004 and 2006 seasons.
I’m sure Tedford and our coaching staff have learned a lot of valuable lessons during this painful process.
Well, if we need to hire a guy, then let’s do it. Evidently UCLA and obviously UW hired some ace recruiters. They must be out there. I don’t think the Cal “product” should be that hard to sell.
"i, for one, welcome our new atomic overlords" - GoldBlooded
by atomsareenough on Feb 1, 2012 3:54 PM PST up reply actions
I hope it’s that easy, but Cal is under a lot of $ restrictions to just hire anyone they want.
Ack, I said I don’t want to speculate, but I can’t help myself. I think Tosh was so good and considered so hard-core Cal that he was given a lot of the 4 and 5 star recruits. No one thought he would ever stab Cal in the back. Doh!
Also, I hope this means Tedford himself gets more involved in recruiting. I think he’s a really trustworthy, likeable kind of guy when he wants to be, and if he builds a relationship with these kids, which is really what To$h was good at (and it doesn’t have to be about xbox, though if Quinn teaches him how to play it couldn’t hurt… it just has to be about that bond).

If he simply verbally communicated contents of written documents, that’s not necessarily criminal. (Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.) But that is still a violation of FERPA, which can carry civil penalties.

Collins seems like he’s a solid hire due to his coaching abilities. The fact that he knows some talented recruits is part of his job. It’s not like he was working for, say, UW, previously and then decided to work at Cal a week before LOI day.

Who did we really lose to UW?
I only count Shaq as a loss to UW. Beaver we never really offered or seemed to get serious about until about a week ago when he came for a visit.
UCLA we lost Walker and McCarthy but we knew McCarthy was very soft and would be hard to keep.
I will admit losing kids to furd or not even considering Cal is a bit tough and worrisome. Really, did any of those OL recruits even really consider Cal? It seems like most were picking between SC and furd, that worrys me.
Shaq is a huge loss, not just in terms of a player but also the emotional impact. Beaver slightly less so, but we need DBs and it would have been great to get him. Armstead ended up at Oregon but that was because of what UW did, and he’s 2 recruits in 1. Not to mention the snowball effect of having guys like Hoffpauir and Shittu and maybe Eligwe and Kourtzidis who might’ve wanted to be part of the #calgang with all those other guys.

former NFL coach brings credibility. Mora can say, “Look I coached in the NFL. I know what it takes to get there. I think you have it.”
Always a good pitch
We have Michalczik and Pendergast, who are two former NFL coaches and know what it takes to get there. We also have Tedford and Gould, who have put many, many kids into the NFL.

I know, but like… Mora hasn’t accomplished shit in the NFL, hasn’t actually developed anyone to go to the NFL. I know he has family connections and stuff but I don’t see where all this credibility comes from. I mean, who knows, maybe he’ll turn things around at UCLA. It certainly wouldn’t surprise me, and I think they have a solid foundation to build a great program, but the proof will be in the pudding.

So that's 16 for this class (incl. EEs in Kline, Okafor and grayshirt Jordan Morgan)
If we add Treggs, Ford and Justin Davidson, that TE from Kentucky who apparently received an offer conditional on Christo not signing w/ Cal (which indeed happened), that would bring us to 19. That’s not so bad, and hopefully there are some additional pleasant surprises.

Regarding Davidson, I dont understand why it was conditional with what Christo would do. We need a few TE’s so we should have just offered Davidson regardless of what Christo decision was.
Maybe it was a concern over number of offers given out. I imagine we had extended about 25 offers already at the time, so maybe it’s conditional simply because there was no space when he was offered and needed something to fall through.
I understand not wanting to oversign but we really need TE’s right now and it should have been a bigger priority with this class.
We lost Miller to graduation and we might also be losing Ladner. Through in the potential injury here and there and we are down to zero depth going into next season at TE.
Yeah, I really don’t understand why we couldn’t have gotten at least one of Kourtzidis or McNamara. Sigh.

Gotta say
I’m not really big into the recruiting stuff. Yeah, I follow it, but I’ve followed Cal football long enough to see that guys under the radar can pan out (e.g., Mike Pawlawski, Aaron Rodgers, Justin Forsett) and highly touted guys might not pan out as well as we expected (I won’t call anybody out).
After the events of the last couple of weeks, I think I will think of this class as a special group. Because of what has happened, I will think of this class as being made up of guys who REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted to go to Cal, especially the guys who stuck with their verbals amid all of the chaos. I hope these guys do special things. It will be extra sweet to see this group succeed.

All great points about under the radar guys
but the margin of error is very slim with lower rated guys and if a lot of them don’t pan out or develop well you are stuck with a bunch of average seasons.
Also the highly touted guys can make up for average coaches. Lower rated guys with bad coaches, such as Marshal, Daft, or Ludwig is a recipe for disaster.

I even got all creeper status and followed kids on Twitter. I’m done with it, never going to pay attention again. I’ll check in on the LOI day and will just hope for the best.
College recruiting is so slimy and dirty. It makes me think way less about NCAAF. And just further proves NFL > NCAAF.
Plus, I’ve also decided that NFL mock drafts are waaaaay more fun that paying attention to coddled 17 year olds.

I consider “dirty” actions made by the university, coach, or boosters.
The agent was not affiliated with the university in anyway and USC obtained no benefit as a result of violation.

It’s not easy to beat one of those teams, but a well-coached but inferior team can do it in a one-off game. It’s awfully hard to play at that level week-in and week-out. In the WAC/MWC, a game against SJSU or New Mexico is essentially a bye week. There are no games like that in major conferences.

but i dont think we’re out of it. the celebration from teams who do well and the depression from teams who aren’t seems ridiculous to me. are we going to get a title for recruiting or for winning football games? there is a coloration but ive never seen a safety or defensive end win the heisman. hopefully kline is like our kellen moore
We’ll be okay in the short term too… Last year’s monster class is still around too!! We just need to have a solid/bigger class next year though. Yes you don’t need elite talent, but it sure does help to get the DeSeans, Marshawns, and Bests!!
Again
my focus is on Kline. Cal had a bunch of monster years (including the one with DJ) but could do nothing because Riley was so inconsistent.

Next year only scholarship guys are KA, Maurice Harris, and Clay if he can get his grades straight (so he’s basically a freshman)

4:45 p.m. The FoxSportsWest show is comprehensive . . . but it’s dragging on a bit. A deep discussion of top SoCal quarterbacks, now running backs. Maybe wideouts next, but Tedford just stepped out. Hopefully he brings a large pizza when he returns.
4:41 p.m. Tedford just walked into the room as Treggs prepares to make his announcement on FoxSportsWest. Tedford looks relaxed — like a man who knows something the rest of us don’t.
4:25 p.m. Cal just tuned into FoxSportsWest’s live feed on an 8×5-foot screen here in the Cronk meeting room where the press conference will take place. Gee, wonder if that means they’re expecting good news on the Bryce Treggs question? You think?
Is there a stream for the Tedford presser?

And by avg. star, we are actually pretty solid. Yes it’s a small number class, but it is a quality class by all accounts. Yes, not as good as USC or Oregon (tied in Rivals) or Furd (ugh) but solid. Lets do this Bears!! Cmon!!!
We were ranked ahead of the furd in '11 and '10
So pre-college talent-wise we should be very close. Our coaching will give us the AXE.
Agreed. A year is enough time for David “Don’t Trust Luck” Shaw’s coaching to permeate through his ranks and erase whatever competitive fire Harbaugh had instilled in the team.

I'm worried about depth
Not lack of talent, just lack of bodies. Cal was projecting 26-28 recruits, we are well short of that number. Hopefully, Cal becomes a destination for disillusioned freshman around the country, and we snag a series of high profile transfers.
I think we’re mostly okay for this year. We didn’t have a huge graduating class, and the positions where guys left, there’s a fair amount of depth… except WR, and we got a bunch of WRs. We may be a little thin at DB though, which is why I’d have liked to get Beaver.

This is very furd centric, but gives you the general flavor of that game. I couldn’t make it all the way through, it was too painful. But man, Pawlawski, Russell, Dawkins, Treggs…that was an offense.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liO4n7rortg
Another vid of Treggs and Dawkins.
Turning point of the game was Pawlawski’s unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on 3rd and 10 that kept a Furd drive alive after we cut it to a 17-14 game late in the 3rd Q. Furd went on the score a TD and sucked the momentum out of us.
Doug Brien missing 4 (?) FGs that day didn’t help us.

You are good at what you do.
And yes, we are old.
I was at that Citrus Bowl, but have almost no memory of it. Too many games between now and then, and possible early Alzheimers.
My only other strong memory of Treggs…I believe the last pass in the UW game went to him (might have been Dawkins but I think it was Treggs), and for a second I thought we had tied it, and then it got knocked away, and my heart broke.

UW is ranked 22 by Scout but that’s because they signed 25 guys. Only 4 of them are 4 stars or higher. Plus they lost all of the in state kids who are worth a damn. I don’t think Tosh will have the same effect as he did at Cal because he can’t talk about going to his alma matter or the value of an education he didn’t have.

I didn’t just want him because he was Syd’s bro. I wanted him because he was a supreme talent and he seemed like a good kid. I am certain he would have made his own identity even at Cal. I mean, he was considering Cal for so long and didn’t seem bothered by the idea of Syd-Quan’s shadow.

I agree. I think the important thing to notice is that we recruited to address needs on the team. Did we need immediate D-Line help? No. Did we need wide receivers? Hell, yes. Did we need some beef up front on the O-Line? Yes, yes, yes. Did we need a potential game-changing QB? Absolutely.
We got what we needed.
So all in all, I think we did OK. Would’ve been nice to get a stud safety (another position of need), but I think Drew will do just fine there in a year or so and of course, we’ll have Sebastian possibly cracking the starting line-up this Fall, which would be great.
I might go out to the fan meet-and-greet day or whatever just to shake the man’s hand.
