Today is the day! All the rumors and all the crazy innuendo finally come to an end. We get a clear end to the crazy recruiting season of 2012. (Unless some of our targets decide to hold off on an LOI for a few more days, in which case we keep on going!)
Today, we are all about verifiable information. Not this person said this. That tweet said that. To that end, there are two main locations for finding this verifiable information.
The first is the CalBears.com Signing Day home. You can find that here.
The second is the CalBearsBlog twitter account. You can find that here.
Here's the announcements to watch out for.
8:15 AM: Markuss Eligwe (LB, Stone Mountain, Stone Mountain, GA): Eligwe remains a Florida State commit and will probably stick, but Cal has entered the mix at the eleventh hour.
9 AM: Announcements can be viewed on FoxSportsArizona.com
Zach Hoffpauir (S, Centennial, Peoria, AZ) Cal decommit, now considering the Bears along with ASU and Stanford. Stanford is the likely choice.
9:20 AM: Thomas Johnson (WR, Skyline, Dallas, TX): Johnson will make his decision on ESPNU. Texas A&M and TCU are the likely two finalists, although Cal and Oregon are remote possibilities.
2 PM: Aziz Shittu (DT, Buhach Colony, Atwater, CA): Top four of Stanford, UCLA, USC, and Cal, and the Cardinal appear to be the favorite.
3-5 PM: Announcements can be viewed on FoxSportsWest.com
Brandon Beaver (DB, Dominguez, Compton, CA): Top three of Washington, Utah, and Cal, with the Huskies still looking like a narrow favorite.
Kenny Lawler (WR, Upland, Upland, CA): Top three of Oregon State, Washington State and Cal. No idea where we go from here.
Bryce Treggs (WR, St. John Bosco, Bellfower, CA): Cal commit and likely to stay that way, but still looking at UCLA or USC.
5:15 PM: Announcement can be viewed on CBSLA.com
Raymond Ford (DB, Junipero Serra, Gardena, CA): Top 3 of Washington State, Utah and Cal.
The Twitter account will probably be much more agile than the Signing Day home, but both should have key information about the newest Golden Bears. I think in the long run it is good we get rid of such a snake… To$h is going to all our recruits and telling them they won’t be able to cut it at Cal academically. He is literally walking into recruits’ homes with Vei Moala’s first semester transcript at Cal and using him as an example of a big time recruit that will struggle academically. Basically, saying Vei will eventually be academically ineligible and don’t let it happen to you etc. He has the transcripts of one of our players and he’s using it against us! He went to Shaq and straight up told him, look at this other kid from Grant and look at how he’s struggling etc.

Not exactly a hard confirmation, but
HappyCheerBear is generally known to be trustworthy over at Scout:
I do understand that transcripts of enrolled students were discussed, and that there are recruits prepared to file statements under penalty of perjury that Tosh used these transcripts to suggest Cal was too hard, and that UW would be much easier.
Using a student’s information without authorization by the student in this way is a violation of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. An administrator would be fired immediately for doing what Tosh did. It will be interesting to see what happens to a football coach who used the transcripts of students at a former school to recruit players to his new employer.

Yes. It’s called FERPA, and it’s federal law that everyone in education is well aware of. Showing around somebody’s transcripts without their written permission would be a very serious violation. Thus, I assume this is just a ridiculous Internet rumor, because otherwise Tosh Lupoi (and perhaps others at his former employers) has an imminent date with the legal system.

If a 14 year old minor takes summer courses at a JC/Unviersity, the school CANNOT give their parents any infor on the kid. It is against the law.

BE: Before Tosh left, I would have said Cal, as the Golden Bears were primed to have as many as five five-star players, which is pretty nuts for a team with a losing conference record over the last X years. You could say Texas A&M, but the class isn’t other-worldly and they are in Texas.

BE: Here’s one for you. The Calpocalypse. I have copy/pasted “was set for Cal until defensive line coach and ace recruiter Tosh Lupoi left for Washington” at least 10 times this week.
SH: How big an impact has that been, now that we’re at signing day?
BE: At one point yesterday, all five of Cal’s receiver COMMITMENTS were going to have an announcement. Commitments usually do not need to have announcements. Luckily for Tedford’s health, one kid announced that he was sticking with Cal
Here’s more on Cal. They lost five-star DT Ellis McCarthy, who flipped to UCLA. They lost five-star safety Shaq Thompson, who flipped to Washington. They essentially lost five-star lineman Arik Armstead, who flipped to Oregon. I say essentially, because Armstead was not a commitment, but everyone believes he was a Cal lock before Lupoi left
And I’m not done. They also lost four-star receiver Jordan Payton to Washington But wait there’s more! They could lose even more today. Basically, Cal lost more top guys in a month than almost any team will sign in an entire cycle.

How much fear and anger should I have today?
Honestly, the WR recruits don’t both me that much. We have a couple of nice ones already. 6 was way too many.
The loss of DL recruits hurt but Cal seems very deep there.
I’m excited about Kline and sadden by Shaq (who look like an Allen type player) but overall, I’m okay with everything.

Anger? None, disappointment for sure. Ultimately, the players who chose other schools after verbally committing to Cal were never “Cal’s” to begin with and they committed to a man or coach instead of the school. Whatevs. The only one I am truly disappointed by is Shaq because he’s an immense talent at a position of need plus a legacy to boot. That said, he loved Tosh and Wilcox more than Cal so he go to Washington and… thats all I’ll say on that.

Besides, like I said above. Cal was kind of late offering the kid and I think Wazzu and OSU have been after him a lot longer than Cal.
This whole escapade almost makes me want to say, forget the 5 stars, they will end up at Sleaze Factory State no matter what Cal says or does….and by that time all the good 2nd tier (loyal) players will have been gobbled up by everyone else. We should simply not waste resources on the best players, because we simply don’t have the magical Cash/Power/Pussy dust SC, UO, UCLA, and UW throw around. It just isn’t worth it.

It was supposed to help with recruiting and put us on an even playing field with other schools so that other schools could no longer use our facilities against us. It was never going to bring in all the top recruits on its own. It was just a piece of the overall puzzle.

The same offensive lineman who staged a phony news conference four years ago to announce he was attending California — even though Cal never recruited him — will sign a legitimate letter of intent Wednesday with Division II Missouri Western State.
Maybe we should recruit him now. We have some scholarship spots open.
After his junior season at Fernley High School, he received recruiting letters from Washington, Oregon and Nevada and even nicknamed himself “D-1.” But because he had a 1.8 grade point average — and thought it was of no use to take the SAT — those schools stopped recruiting him.
