WBB: #8 Cal Beats #19 Kansas! Videos!

On Friday night the #8 ranked California Golden Bears played their toughest non-conference home game of the season, against #19 Kansas. It was a must-win game for the Bears if they want to keep climbing toward that elite status about which Head Coach Lindsay Gottlieb talks. And the Bears did not disappoint. After trailing 8-4 very early, the Bears went on an 11-0 run, and never trailed again. Kansas kept things tight with great shooting, hitting 7 of 17 threes, and 14 of 16 from the line. But ultimately the Bears' speed and rebounding were too much for them, as the Bears ended with a 88-79 win that could prove very important come Tournament time.

While it was a team effort, the player of the game was unquestionably Layshia Clarendon, who led the Bears with 28 points, one short of her career high. She added 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals, was 2 of 4 on three-pointers, was 4 for 4 from the free throw line, and was just all over the place, playing harassing defense, causing held balls, and generally wreaking havoc on the Jayhawks.

And in case that wasn't enough, here she is once more, this time creating a shot just in time to beat the shot clock:

But Layshia wasn't the whole story, of course. Gennifer Brandon had her sixth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Here she picks up a foul, which sent her to the line for 2 of those points:

Reshanda Gray added 13 points. Here she scores with an assist from Clarendon:

Afure Jemerigbe had 10 points. Here she gets 2 of them by snagging her own rebound and getting the put-back:

Of course, our beloved Straw Hat Band was in attendance and provided entertainment for the listening pleasure of Cal fans.

At the end of the game, the enthusiastic crowd counted down the final seconds, and greeted the team and Coach Gottlieb with a well-earned ovation.
