Jordan Payton And Shaq Thompson Might Have Tweeted Out Cal Commitments
[Update: The tweets seem to no longer exist. Guess we'll have to tune in tomorrow to find out. Hope it is Cal!]
The official announcements apparently will not be made until tomorrow, but there are two tweets going around right now from two Cal recruits about their interest in playing at Cal.
Talk to my moms... College I'm attending Cal Golden Bears.... GO BEARS

Everyone the college ill be attending is... Go golden bears!
I'm not good at all this newfangled technology, but this seems pretty straight forward to me. How exciting! Many thanks to Mr. Thompson and Mr. Payton for selecting Cal and we all look forward to them contributing at Memorial in the many years to come. GO BEARS!

Odd. Niether of the tweets appear to exist anymore. They both had them up for a while and then jointly deleted them. I updated the post to reflect that. How weird.

wouldn't worry about it
since both guys still want to announce officially tomorrow, they likely just wanted to generate some more excitement for it from Cal fans. shows how fired up they are to commit to Cal too.

I saw the tweets this morning. I need to remember to take a screenshot with stuff like this. But in my giddiness I was to busy dreaming of great things to come to Memorial Stadium.
The most likely deleted the tweets so they can still be highlighted tomorrow on the Army Allstar game.
Everything I’m reading on Arik Armstead is that he will not announce tomorrow, per his Dad. Still down to Cal, ND & Oregon.

Well, maybe Allen will want to stay for his senior year when he sees what Kline can do. Also, if this class does completely turn around our program, he may most definitely want to stay for a magical final year in college football. To be completely frank, he’s not going to be a first round pick, so it wouldn’t really hurt him either.
I had a dream recently where Keenan said in a press conference how it was dream to play in the NFL but he really also wanted to stay for his senior if the fans and his teams wanted him to so that he could try for a NCG with Kline at the helm.

I dunno, I thought that at one point, too. Then he went out and played like he really wants to be week in and week out. Another very good year and he could definitely put himself in consideration. Maybe doesn’t have the speed for Top 10, but definitely enough physical talent to be late 1st round, at least.

With all of these receivers, I hope we’re not going to bring back Mouse Davis and the Run & Shoot!
My favorite Cal football ad during that period was seen of the side of bus:
“Run & Shoot Cal Football”
my understanding
is that we’re loading up this year because 2012 is a very deep and talented year for WR’s. It won’t be nearly as good a crop in 2013, so we will likely only take 1 or 2 next year.
we will give 3 or 4 of these guys a chance to play this year, while the other 3 or 4 will redshirt. Thus, we’re really recruiting two years’ worth of WR’s in this class.
I am THE DOOMBRINGER. We Are Cal.
We're also loading up because our WR depth is diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiire.
KA21 and Terrance Montgomery on schollie, plus some walkons, with Kaelin Clay as a question mark.

oh yeah, that too
it’s one of the reasons we’ve been able to pull so many of these 2012 WR’s. The chance for playting time is there.
I am THE DOOMBRINGER. We Are Cal.
How can you tell who is on scholarship and who is not? If there’s a player on the Cal roster and he’s not listed on Rivals, is it safe to say that he’s a walk-on? And don’t some walk-ons earn their scholarships? We seem to have a number of those: Camporeale, Bouza, Manuel, Georgio, Kapp…
Aside from McGovern (who had a whole article surrounding his status as a walkon) I actually have no idea.
I was going off of conjecture that if I hadn’t seen any news about their recruitment (as was the case with Bouza and Bostock) they were probably non-schollie.

most guys that u’ve never heard of in recruiting process, are usually walk-on’s.
I think Eric Stevens was originally a walk-on too.
Of the 85 scholarships, how do we know who’s on scholarship and who’s not? Is all guesswork from the outside?
If a walk-on doesn’t get a scholarship, do they typically stick around for 4 years?
Typically? I don’t think so. But it happens.
As for how we know who’s on schollie: It can be educated guesswork. You kind of have to look back at the recruiting classes and see who signed LOIs. That gives you the schollie players and you can make an educated guess from there.
Man crush on Aaron Rodgers, since 2003.
CaliforniaGoldenBlogs/Twitter/Facebook/Clothing Store
I don’t know a good answer to this question. What I can do though is to give you the notable walk-on players I am aware of:
Mike Manuel, RB
Bryce McGovern, WR
Ben Miroglio, TE
Brian Farley, OL
Jed Barnett, K
Spencer Hagan, TE
Dan Camporeale, OLB
Austin Clark, DT
Reason why I know they are walk-ons are 1) they publicly declined schollies to come to Cal and/or 2) impressive performances according to the press during spring/fall practices.

Sigh. Why are we having so much trouble pulling in elite O-linemen? It’s clearly a need, so it’s not like these guys would have to worry about all the depth in front of them, and they should play pretty quickly. We’re not having trouble pulling in elite players at any other positions. We have the facilities now, to go with our academic reputation, and I know a lot of the 4-and-5-star O-linemen seem to value academics…. So what’s the deal?

Well, this was such a great class of O-linemen, especially on the West Coast. So, if we’d gotten at least one of Simmons, Banner, Murphy, Garnett, or Peat, it would have really made the class shine very brightly. Armond Armstead likely to transfer
(espn insider link)
http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/colleges/usc/post/_/id/1166/armond-armstead-likely-to-transfer
It appears more likely than ever that USC defensive tackle Armond Armstead will not be returning to the Trojans next year as a story today in the OC Register indicated that he is "strongly considering transferring" to another school.
Armstead listed Notre Dame, Auburn and Arkansas as three possible destinations. He has a meeting with USC administrators on Monday to review the transfer request.
His reasons for transferring revolve around undisclosed medical issues which have resulted in Armstead not being cleared to play by the USC doctors.
This transfer scenario appeared likely in December when his brother Arik — an ESPNU 150 recruit — dropped USC from consideration after being a longtime verbal commit to the Trojans.
so i’m guessing there’s no chance we get armstead’s brother as well. (would he have to sit out a year going from pac12 to pac12 school?)
quite the contrary
we have a very good chance to get Armond.
And because he will have graduated, he won’t have to sit out a year when he transfers
I am THE DOOMBRINGER. We Are Cal.
He's already graduated, so as long as he transfers into a graduate program not at his school there would be no penalty.
Transferring in conference follows the same rule as transferring out of conference, except for (what I believe was) a gentleman’s agreement that USC players who were upperclassmen when the sanctions hit would still have to sit for a year if they transferred in conference (as opposed to being immediately eligible if they transferred out of conference, per an NCAA waiver).

Not sit out?
even transferring within the conference? I think the SEC has a rule opposing intra-conference transfers like this.
"Fuck DOOOOOM. We prefer BOOOOOM!! - alpha1906
Like I said there was a gentleman's agreement to sit players transferring out of USC when the sanctions hit
But that was the only in-conference exception to the normal transfer rules I’ve ever heard of.

Couldn't both of them be headed to ND?

yes, that's possible
but i think things would have to change dramatically for Arik to not end up at Cal at this juncture.
of course, Bama thought the same thing about KA. so it goes in recruiting.

The question is whether Armond and Arik really want that badly to play with each other,

after they visited our facilities in the past. From what I’ve heard, it was in pretty terrible condition.
Our facilities were easily the worst in the pac10. now they’re amongst the best in the country. That is a BIG deal. Now maybe we can start winning regularly in my lifetime.

This all has such an air of “OMG did Billy ask Tina to the prom? Did he? What about Ashley and Trace?! Yesterday he said he did but then that was just a rumor but is he or is he not?!? Omgomgomgomgomg.”
The odds of Cal winning are inversely proportional to the odds of Cal winning.

even after he told them he was solid with Cal, all I could think of is a jilted lover trying to get back with an ex.

Stoked about the Shaq commitment for those two very important reasons.
Although I back the blue and gold no matter what the aesthetic appearance of our players, I can’t help but love a little double threat (hot and talented) on the field.
Stoked to see how the whole recruiting class improves our team for the 2012 season.
The only thing I'm more passionate about than Cal ... is helping peeps strategize great sex.

Is this true?
I’m looking at an article on 24/7 sports and they list those guys as having committed today (sorry if this link doesn’t post properly):
http://247sports.com/Article/Cal-recruiting-primed-to-explode-FreeMobile-Bears-55925
Suck on dese nuts TexAss!!!
This is the news I needed after that tough bball loss last night.
*Insert something witty here*. Oh, and Stanfurd Sucks.
Hooray! Go Bears!
Safety play is so damn important, and we’ve had some great ones at Cal. With the speedy running games in the PAC 12, not to mention passing games, the safety must really cover ground and make good calls. Thompson is a stud and a rare physical talent with a good head on his shoulders.
Payton will be a great fit too.
I’ll hold my breath a little until signing day, but wow, this class is shaping up to be the best I’ve seen in a long time.
DJ Foster?
Awesome news about Payton and Shaq – hopefully Shiitu and McCarthy fall as well tomorrow! Any word on DJ Foster? I thought he made his official visit and was really strong on us? Now everywhere is saying we’re not in his top 4?
Easy there, Avi.

This if from Foster's Rivals page
Under “latest news” section:
Three schools remain in contention for D.J. Foster and the Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro athlete has not reached any decisions yet but leading up to the final weeks in his recruitment Cal holds a slight edge over USC and Arizona State.
This is dated from 12/31. Though his rival’s page also says that he has high interest in Oregon and ASU and low interest in Cal. Not sure if that’s been updated lately, though.
Here’s the link to his page:
http://rivals.yahoo.com/arizonavarsity/football/recruiting/player-D.J.-Foster-103728
That very same page...
…..shows what likely is an outdated list which shows Cal as not one of the top four. So it’s easy to tell where that impression might come from.
LOLWUT?
umm, we’re good with Foster. he should make a decision after his offical visit to SC next weekend.
I am THE DOOMBRINGER. We Are Cal.
In the past few months, Shaq has decommitted to Cal, named Notre Dame his leader, named UW his leader, named USC his leader, dropped USC because no one believed him, and now might be a Cal Bear.
If I wasn’t stupid, I might say Shaq was trolling us.
I’m going to wait a bit on proclaiming Payton as a Bear, because I do think UCLA will make a pitch for him (and other Bears, though I doubt they get anyone of note).
That only makes me want him to be a Bear that much more. We need more players who play the Game Of Trolls!

Thomas Johnson just decommitted from Texas
- WR and #32 player in the nation…is going to visit TCU on the 13th, Oregon on the 20th and Cal on the 27th. That is great since we have last shot and many commits are going to be here that day to help recruit….

I count only 6:
Treggs, Powe, Dozier, Harper, Walker, Payton.
If Walker decides to bail that’s only 5. Plenty of room for say, Johnson or Diggs, considering how thin we’re going to be at WR.

So the Shaq will play FS or SS? Will he return kicks/punts?
Can someone give me a 2 sentence-ish description on Payton?
Can Cal has Rose Bowl?
Is there a secret anti-Berkeley requirement that a Republican similar to Ike has to be President for Cal to go to Rose Bowl?
(donates to Ron Paul 2012)

Crumpy’s running with the tweet, too
What was already a very good football recruiting class for Cal became great on Friday when five-star prospect Shaq Thompson, rated the No. 1 or No. 2 prep safety in the nation, said he is coming to Berkeley.
It makes sense for Thompson to come to Cal as his older brother, cornerback Syd’Quan Thompson, parlayed an excellent career as a Golden Bear to making an NFL roster.
Thompson is part of a nice little pipeline Cal has going with Grant High School in Sacramento. Defensive lineman Viliami Moala was a freshman on this year’s Cal team while his high school buddy, defensive lineman Puka Lopa, spent the season as a redshirt freshman.
Thank you Twitter for finishing off real journalism.
