They've been mostly mediocre in the Neuheisel and Dorrell years
Why do all these recruits want to go to UCLA despite their non-success? I’m really curious…

Hopefully I will not live to see this society.
Staying up late, swapping manly stories...
And in the morning, Brian Treggs be making waffles! :o( From Faraudo in the CC Times:
The late news is that Adam Gorney of Rivals reports that USC has offered Cal long-time commit Bryce Treggs and says he will seriously consider the Trojans, Bears and UCLA. The senior from St. John Bosco HS in Bellflower plans to make his announcement Wednesday afternoon.
Treggs, whose father Brian starred for the Bears, may simply be confused given the upheaval surrounding Cal recruiting. Who could blame him? It would be surprising if any 18-year-old wasn’t confused by all that is happening.
But Treggs is a five-star Scout.com prospect and Jeff Tedford cannot afford another piece of bad news.

I dont keep track of UW players
but Cal has had someone leave early for NFL every year.
2011 Vereen (actually Vereen graduated in 3.5 years! while being a significant contributor since Freshman year)
2010 Best
2009 Morrah
2008 Jackson
2007 Lynch
If the recruits think that they can’t make it academically at Cal and would need to attend an easier school, then I am fine with them not coming.
by LEastCoastBears on Jan 31, 2012 11:01 PM PST up reply actions
Deeper look ...
UW’s rates have in fact generally been higher:
2000 cohort: Cal 52, UW 64
2001 cohort: Cal 53, UW 65
2002 cohort: Cal 64, UW 69
2003 cohort: Cal 65, UW 82
2004 cohort: Cal 54, UW 76
But, given some of the cohorts are as small as around 20 people, we’re sometimes talking differences of like 1-2 people per year. E.g., 12/20=60, 13/20=65, 14/20=70.
In fact, just taking the most recent cohort as an example (I’m too lazy to do this for the other years), the difference is not statistically significant. E.g., assuming 11 of Cal’s 19 commits graduated, and 17 of UW’s 23 commits graduated, I get a p value of 0.44. (Note the proportions for those fractions are a little off the percents quoted above, but that’s probably due to different cohort sizes used in the numbers reported by the NCAA due to transfers etc.)
Of course, this discussion was probably not included in Sark’s PowerPoint presentation

While our numbers do not make me happy (and the NFL thing seems to just be a facile explanation for a deeper problem), if a kid is serious about academics then Tosh is doing them a disservice with this pitch.
Anyone who’s serious about graduating is going to graduate. 90% of the student body and 81% of student athletes graduate in six years. The better questions for someone who’s serious about school concern the quality of the student’s education and the value of the student’s degree. One school decisively wins that comparison by most objective measures.
I’m sure it’s under the guise of something like “academic support” or “team environment,” but the message Tosh is really sending to a kid by saying this is you can’t succeed over there, but you’ll succeed over here because we give you more help. That’s great for a kid’s self-confidence.
Just. Sleazy.
Well, if it’s the difference between our football players and student body and/or student athletes across the board, then it seems to be systematic. And that’s a problem.
But if you’re talking about the differences between us and them, then I agree. And more importantly, like I said, completely irrelevant to a recruit who actually cares. I guarantee the graduation rates of kids who take academics seriously, as opposed to a tool to staying eligible, are astronomical.
I guarantee the graduation rates of kids who take academics seriously, as opposed to a tool to staying eligible, are astronomical.
Agreed, but my point is you don’t even need that explanation. As it is, ignoring any other considerations, the evidence does not support the notion that UW players are more likely to graduate.
I agree with everything you’re saying, but what I’m asking is why should this even be relevant to a recruit who would care?
It might be relevant to the parent of a kid who does not take school seriously. Or who has a learning disability. Or who’s otherwise in danger of slipping through the cracks.
But unless the rates are 10% to 90%, then it just doesn’t matter to any kid who cares enough to ask the question.
I always find graduation rates to be a bit curious. I would consider an 70% graduation rate of engineering, math, and science majors a greater accomplishment than a 95% graduation rate in lib arts like american studies, art history, etc.
My point is that simply using graduation rates is silly. One needs to also find out what they are graduating with.
Wouldn’t pointing out graduation rates seem demeaning to a kid too? As in, "Hey, look at how easy it is to graduate here. You’d actually do well here as opposed to that school that’s hard to graduate from.’ << implied that you might be too dumb to get the better degree??
Also, if he wants to graduate easily he should head to ASU…
I agree that it is a bit demeaning, it is like saying you can’t compete with all these smart kids in the classroom so why try?
However, I believe the way Tosh would paint it is that Cal and Tedford let kids down in the classroom or care enough about them to help them graduate. Come here to UW where we make sure all our kids graduate, just look at this data!
by SDBear on Feb 1, 2012 12:02 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
So more help = better? More expensive tutors = better? It’s almost like they’re hooking them up with passing grades… If you need lots of help to graduate, you honestly shouldn’t be in college. I understand that student-athletes have other large time commitments, but really? That’s what academic standards are for, to weed out the kids that wouldn’t be able to cut it in school.
Tosh doesn't even have to say anything about more help or expensive tutors
If Tosh is using negative recruiting tactics to get kids and their parents to come to UW abd nkt Cal and Tosh wants to use academics to land them he can do it a number of ways.
Tosh comes in to a kid that Cal is recruiting, he says something to the kid “I bet Tedford and his staff tried to sell you on Cals academics, didn’t he?”
kid nods his head yes.
Tosh says something like “well I know how it really works at Cal and Tedford is telling you and your parents a lot of lies!”
Tosh continues “truth is once you get to Cal Tedford and his staff will not care about your academics at all and do not care whether you graduate or not from Cal, they only care about their futures and winning games!”
Tosh continues “if you don’t believe me, look at these graduation rate number.”
The following day the kid is tweeting about UWs graduation rate as a reason he picked UW over Cal.
by SDBear on Feb 1, 2012 12:23 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
Academic standards are set up to make sure each student at Berkeley receives an education representative of the quality offered by the University of California. The will and desire, or lack thereof, of each student, will decide whether a “kid will be able to cut it in school”. Student-athletes at the college level show that will and desire on the field of play. Tutors are here to help them focus their attention when they are off the field, so they have that Berkeley education when the college game is finally done.
UW grads probably have no idea what your post just said

Well, isn't that special.
We now have evidence Tosh is using inside info of the Cal program to negative recruit against us.
to be fair
graduation rates aren’t exactly inside info
According to BI
I guess Tosh is sharing Cal players’ grades with recruits.
Not sure about that; the moment the guy mentioned it on the Growls board, everyone got on his case about sharing sensitive information from the Insiders board…
that’s so sleazy. HEY EVERYBODY! THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING’S AVERAGE GRADE POINT AVERAGE IS LOWER AT CAL THAN UW’s. BETTER GO TO UW!

Regarding Kenny Walker
I don’t mind losing him, and its not because I think he is a lesser talent or anything (I fully admit I can’t tell the difference between a great recruit and an average one by highlight films), but rather growing up in Richmond and going to school in Berkeley is a bit of a disservice to the student. College should be about learning new things, and part of that learning is experiencing a different area. To clarify, different parts of the bay area definitely have a different feel, and I don’t think Kline is doing a disservice as the Diablo Valley and Berkeley are quite different. Same is true for all of the Bay except Richmond – Oakland (in my humble opinion)
I'm not sure where you're going with this...
Any student, even if they’re living a few blocks away from the Cal campus, will be entering a new world. Richmond is as far away from being on the Cal campus as growing up in Castro Valley, Fresno or Dublin. Walker would have benefited from being a Cal students.
Lawrence Ross
by alpha1906 on Feb 1, 2012 12:18 AM PST up reply actions 2 recs
Also...
“Berkeley is still close enough to Richmond for any potential undesirable influences to continue.” This statement damns Walker for living in a lower income community, without any evidence that he has ever had any “undesirable influences” in his life or his own action. Be careful about how you characterize people by where they come from. It’s that attitude during the 70s and 80s which condemned Cal from not getting top recruits in the Oakland area, mainly because African American high schoolers felt that Cal had no interest in bringing in many kids from the Oakland Techs and Castlemonts of the world. It’s the same thing that UCLA deals with in Los Angeles.
