DBD 2.1.12: Memorial Stadium=Happiness
Screw it, I am turning this into today's DBD to create a safe haven in in response to the impending dooooooooom. When something goes horribly wrong, grab a stress ball and look at the beautiful pictures of our historic football stadium. Doom? What doom?
Before you hit the bottle in anticipation of Signing Day, check out our glorious home away from home:
California Memorial Stadium on November 24, 1923: Stanfurd @ California.
View from the Student Section on September 4, 2010: UC Davis @ California.
West Bowl/Press Box. Rich people, old blues, and media will be sitting here. Perhaps they will make noise now?
Our team and Cal Band will be running out of this area on September 1. :D
South End Zone/East Bowl/Student Section. I will be sitting standing here. Also, annoying Stanfurdites and fusky fans will be sitting in the end zone area—can I throw things at them. Please?!?
California Memorial Stadium on September 1, 2012: Nevada @ California

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

if everything comes out on this, could be bad for all schools involved. illegal stuff. way beyond recruiting for another school on cal’s dime. he apparently stole records and tried to use personal information of current players against the program. trouble is that privacy laws make that flat-out illegal.
It will be interesting to see whether Cal initiates something re: (redacted)’s unlawful activity, or whether fans have to press them to do something by discussing it publicly. Should be an uncomfortable situation for (redacted).

The Goodbye E-mail
[Unspoken Job Skill: Wording a Goodbye Email That Won’t Make Co-Workers Cringe ]
The farewell email: It’s a chance for departing employees to have the last word at work—and for their colleagues to chuckle, gasp, roll their eyes or sigh wistfully, depending upon the message.
It can recap mission-critical accomplishments, thank pivotal colleagues, and even drop in a little zinger about the thin gruel served at staff meetings.
On the flip side, co-workers who are left behind comb cheerful text for signs of discontent. Colleagues gather in hallways to guess the circumstances behind the move. In a large corporate environment, sometimes a heartfelt farewell gets a response like, “Who the heck was that?”

When I was a biotech intern, there was a guy who left and his last message was paging one of the bigwig scientists to “Extension 69.” Which didn’t exist. And the scientist then went on the intercom “I can’t find 69. Repeat. Having trouble with 69.” Much snickering ensued.

I think it really depends. For instance, one person who left Big Evil Bank now works at ETF Company. It’s nice to know that there’s a contact there in case the need arises.
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
I suppose so, but isn’t that going to happen more or less naturally anyway if you have any contact with the person or “hear it through the grapevine”?
So many of these emails tend to roam into bridge-burning territory or sappy sentiment territory (“I have loved working with each and every one of you and am so inspired to have been here bla bla bla”) I just think it’s not worth it in most cases. At least from the departee’s perspective; you identified a reason it might be helpful for the remaining employees/firm.

I agree, for the most part. They’re stupid. This was the one time it was useful, since it’s somewhat related.
Also, sometimes it’s great for entertainment value. One tech guy left and sent out a standard “Great working with you guys” e-mail.
The other tech guy got pissed off and sent a super-long e-mail complaining about the departing tech guy, complete with photos and personal insults.
We all had a great laugh.

Its inherently awkward. Either you are breaking up with a team (its not you, its me) or you are getting fired (can we still be friends?).
Cal: Bears with Books.
I think it’s odd not to send some kind of an email. Mind you, this is coming from someone who has presided over a 75% reduction in team size over the last 7 months, comprised of people who had been working together for years.
Even if all you say is “I’ve decided to pursue another opportunity, stay in touch,” that’s enough. Most people won’t believe you anyway, but there’s a ritual to be observed.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.

The Currency of Signing Day
As Colleges Labor to Land Five-Star Recruits, We Ask: Do Those Ratings Mean Anything?
The 54% failure rate of five-star players to be drafted is “quite high” and somewhat surprising, said Cary Caro, an assistant business professor at Xavier University in New Orleans who analyzes and has written about recruiting.
Caro said one possible reason is that college coaches typically seek players who will fit into specific offensive and defensive systems, while professional coaches are often looking for physical prototypes.
Even when players do everything well in college, they can still fall victim to the NFL’s brutal math. There are roughly 250 NFL draft selections annually, and thousands of college players vie for them. Of that group, only 32 will make it in the first round—and a lot of those decisions say more about what a particular team needs at that time than which available player had the most talent.

I gotta give Silver credit for this but he's right

Facebook Picks Morgan Stanley to Lead IPO
[1]
Facebook Inc., the world’s largest social-networking service, chose Morgan Stanley to take the lead on its planned initial public offering, four people with knowledge of the matter said.
Facebook will file plans with regulators today to raise $5 billion, though the amount may increase, two people said. Morgan Stanley stands to earn a larger share of the fees collected by securities firms for arranging the IPO. Goldman Sachs Group Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM), Barclays Plc (BARC) and Bank of America Corp. will help with the sale, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the matter is private.
Getting picked for the IPO is a coup for Morgan Stanley and Michael Grimes, the global co-head of the bank’s technology investment banking unit. The securities firm won the biggest share of business underwriting U.S. initial offers by Internet companies last year, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Taking the lead on Facebook may catapult the New York-based bank to the top of the U.S. IPO league table for a third year running.

Think of Zynga (ZNGA). Trading at about 10.50 per share.
If you want to buy puts out five months to June (more like 4.5 months, but whatev) at a strike price of 10, you have to pay $1.80.
And that’s just Zynga!

Here’s where ZNGA stock is trading right now
A put option is a contract you buy on ZNGA stock. It gives you the right to sell ZNGA stock at a pre-designated price, but it expires at some point in time. Each contract covers 100 shares. In this example, it expires the third Friday of June this year and has a strike price of $10 (currently about 50 cents below where it’s trading).
Here are where the options are trading right now. Scroll to the bottom to see puts.
These are trading at about 50 cents per share. If you buy one contract, you have to pay $50.
To break even, ZNGA needs to drop by $1 in the next five months, a fall of 9.5%. This is inherently risky since if it doesn’t, you lose that $50.

Possible wealth effects
Wealth managers working with Facebook employees say the IPO could easily mint 500 to 1,000 new millionaires — perhaps as much as one-third of the company — with many engineers who joined Facebook in its first few years in line to own $10 million or more in stock. Zuckerberg, who is thought to own almost one-quarter of the company, could end up worth well over $20 billion.
State officials recently declared they will need to adjust revenue projections upward for the 2012-13 fiscal year because of “the Facebook Effect.” “The best that any expert can offer is a somewhat informed guess,” Deputy Legislative Analyst Jason Sisney said in an email. “The range of error around any such guess is very, very large. The positive revenue effect for the state could be $300 million, $500 million, $1 billion, $1.5 billion, or something else. No one knows.”
One model analysts are looking at is Google. A state Department of Finance estimate of the capital gains tax impact of Google’s IPO, which raised $1.7 billion, was at least $142 million, and potentially more, in the two years after going public in 2004.
This is really interesting, and I hadn’t thought of that. Because the wealth being create is asset-valuation based (rather than just cash) the sudden millionaires would be paying into the state through capital gains, but not to local economies through sales tax. (Assuming they wouldn’t immediately cash out their stock, which they shouldn’t because the stock would tank). So it would create a lot of millionaires on paper, but not in spending.

Beat me to it
I know this is a concern for a friend of mine who wants to buy a condo out in SF. The new Facebook millionaires will start to buy condos, driving the prices up.
Also, I knew a handful of people at facebook. I wonder how many of them will now be paper millionaires.

OMG this looks nomz:
Total Time: 40 Minutes
Serves: 4
Ingredients
9 ounces high-quality semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into cubes
4 large eggs [Ed: Sadface]
1/4 cup granulated sugar
Lightly sweetened whipped cream, to taste (optional)
What To Do
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Arrange four 1-cup ovenproof coffee cups, mugs or 8-ounce ramekins in a baking or roasting pan.
2. Melt chocolate and butter together in a double boiler set over barely simmering water. Whisk occasionally until smooth. Remove from heat and set aside.
3. Stir eggs and sugar together in a mixing bowl, then set bowl over simmering water. Stir until warm to the touch.
4. Remove from heat. Beat egg mixture with an electric beater until light and fluffy, 3-5 minutes. Gently fold egg mixture into chocolate mixture.
5. Spoon batter into cups. Add enough very hot water to baking pan to come halfway up sides of cups. Bake until the tops lose their glossy finish, 15-20 minutes. Carefully remove cups from pan.
6. Serve warm or at room temperature with a generous dollop of whipped cream, if desired. Puddings may be refrigerated for up to one day. To reheat, bring them to room temperature and then set in a 350-degree oven until warm, about 5 minutes.

With only four ingredients, it couldn’t be easier to make. Cooking these simple kitchen staples results in three layers of differing texture: The top layer is slightly crispy; the middle, a warm, silken pudding and, at the bottom, you’ll find the most unctuous hot chocolate imaginable.
The key here is very good chocolate. Choose one you would like to eat instead of a decent baking bar. If whipped cream is to your fancy, sweeten it ever so sparingly with confectioners’ sugar. Spiking the cream with a splash of bourbon will surely not arouse complaint either. Serve these in small mugs for a trompe-l’oeil effect—at least one of your guests will unknowingly try to take a sip of dessert. A last course that’s both trick and treat.

AEROPRESS
awesome? pros/cons? worth the $20? I hate cleaning out the French press at home..
by the federer express on Feb 1, 2012 11:11 AM PST up reply actions
TL:DR
I’d call it awesome. Totally worth the $20. There is the added cost of the filters, but even drinking coffee every day, I’m still on the original pack that came with it.
Pros: Tastes great. Depending on how many scoops of coffee you use, you can make an espresso-like rich coffee, or more of a standard coffee. I use my old coffee maker to heat the water that I pour in. Could also use the microwave, I guess, but the temperature after running it through the standard coffee-maker is just about right.
Clean-up is much, much easier than a french press. You basically take out the plunger, put it in the opposite side, and all the grounds + used filter go into the garbage. Too hard to call taste-wise between it and the french press. But, I have them both and never use the FP anymore because the Aero is so much easier to use.
Cons: In terms of amount of coffee used relative to cups of coffee made, it’s pricey. I get one cup of rich coffee per three scoops of grounds. (I like that near espresso-taste.)
If you’re a purist and looking for crema, you don’t get that. It’s more like the best drip coffee you ever got.
Other con is that if you want lots of coffee or a large cup, it’s not so good. You can only put so much water into the tube. More grounds = less room for coffee. I often have to put water in and wait a bit for it to drain through on its own. It’s for one-person service. If my wife or a guest wants a cup, I have to do the process twice.

Mmmmmmmmm
ISM Index of U.S. Manufacturing Increases
Manufacturing in the U.S. grew in January at the fastest pace in seven months, a sign the industry will lead the U.S. expansion early this year.
The Institute for Supply Management’s manufacturing index climbed to 54.1, less than projected, from 53.1 in December, the Tempe, Arizona-based group’s report showed today. Figures greater than 50 signal expansion. The median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News was 54.5. Orders and export demand picked up last month.
Factory production, led by inventory rebuilding at the end of 2011, is poised to keep expanding as the need to update equipment drives orders at companies like Caterpillar Inc. (CAT) and demand for cars lifts sales at automakers. More growth in the industry will help cushion the world’s largest economy from a slowdown in Europe caused by the region’s debt crisis.

Mmmmmmmmm Part II
U.S. Companies Added 170,000 Workers: ADP
Companies added 170,000 workers in January, reflecting job gains in services and at small businesses, according to a private report based on payrolls.
The increase was less than forecast and followed a revised 292,000 rise the prior month that was smaller than previously reported, the report from the Roseland, New Jersey-based ADP Employer Services showed today. The median estimate in a Bloomberg News survey of economists called for an advance of 182,000.
"The job market continues to grow at a moderate pace," Jonathan Basile, a senior economist at Credit Suisse in New York, said before the report. "We’re on a gradually improving path for the labor market."
More hiring is needed to spur consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of the world’s largest economy. A Labor Department report in two days may show payrolls last month rose by 145,000 and the unemployment rate held at 8.5 percent, economists in a Bloomberg survey projected.

Gross: Low Rates Signaling Birth of Austerity
Bill Gross said the zero-bound interest rate policies embraced by central banks including the Federal Reserve may end up killing as opposed to creating credit and developed economies may suffer accordingly.
While recent actions by policy makers provide assurances that short and intermediate U.S. bond yields may not change for years, any potential for price appreciation is limited, Gross, who runs the world’s biggest bond fund, wrote today in a monthly investment outlook released on Newport Beach, California-based Pacific Investment Management Co.’s website.
"Monetary and fiscal excesses carry with them explicit costs," Gross wrote. "My intent really is to alert you, the reader, to the significant costs that may be ahead for a global economy and financial marketplace still functioning under the assumption that cheap and abundant central bank credit is always a positive dynamic."
The Fed purchased $2.3 trillion of debt in two rounds of quantitative easing known as QE1 and QE2 as part of its efforts to support the world’s biggest economy. Policy makers last month said they plan to keep their benchmark interest rate near zero until at least the end of 2014. Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said following the central bank’s Jan. 25 meeting that he’s considering another program of debt purchases if it appears the recovery isn’t progressing.

Jog for Jill
BERKELEY – On Sunday, March 11, spend the afternoon with the California Athletics family as Golden Bear student-athletes, staff, coaches and friends honor the late Jill Costello – a former coxswain on the Cal women’s crew who passed away from lung cancer on June 24, 2010 – in the third annual Jog for Jill.
Jill’s Legacy and the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation will host the third annual 5K on the Berkeley campus, starting and ending at Lower Sproul Plaza.
"This event is so important to Jill because it raises money for research, calls attention to lung cancer and brings us closer and closer to achieving her goal of ultimately ending this terrible disease," former teammate Erica Bellis said. "Jill’s work and her story brought, and continues to bring, the most attention this disease has ever had. Jill did not just give a small push toward finding a cure for lung cancer, she gave a giant shove.
WBB traveling to Arizona
BERKELEY – The California Golden Bears (15-6, 6-3 Pac-12) try to remain in second place in the Pac-12 as they head to Arizona to take on the Arizona Wildcats (13-8, 2-7 Pac-12) on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. MT (6 p.m. PT) in Tucson. The Bears close out the trip on Saturday, Feb. 4 when they face the Arizona State Sun Devils (15-5, 6-3 Pac-12) at 2 p.m. MT (1 p.m. PT) in Tempe. This will be the only regular-season meeting this year between the Bears and the Arizona teams. The Bears had a six-game win streak snapped in their 74-71 overtime loss against No. 4 Stanford. Though the Bears now have four losses this season to teams ranked in the top-25, the Bears have lost those four games by a combined nine points.
The Bears scored 71 points in the Stanford game, the second-most scored against the Cardinal this season with only the Tennessee Volunteer’s managing to score more (80).
Scientists close to entering Vostok, Antarctica’s biggest subglacial lake
Reaching Lake Vostok would represent the first direct contact with what scientists now know is a web of more than 200 subglacial lakes in Antarctica — some of which existed when the continent was connected to Australia and was much warmer. They stay liquid because of heat from the core of the planet.
"This is a huge moment for science and exploration, breaking through to this enormous lake that we didn’t even know existed until the 1990s," said John Priscu, a researcher at Montana State University who has long been involved in antarctic research, including a study of Vostok ice cores.
"If it goes well, a breakthrough opens up a whole new chapter in our understanding of our planet and possibly moons in our solar system and planets far beyond," he said. "If it doesn’t go well, it casts a pall over the whole effort to explore this wet underside of Antarctica."

Men’s golf second by one stroke in Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. – Cal (272-284-280 – 836, -16) battled host and eventual team champion Arizona (277-277-281 – 835, -17) throughout Tuesday’s third and final round of the Arizona Intercollegiate before eventually settling for second place one stroke behind the winners in a two-day, 54-hole event played at the par-71, 6,793-yard Arizona National Golf Club. Two seasons ago, Cal beat the Wildcats by a single stroke in the same event.
"This thing was close all the way, and I was really proud of how our guys were grinding," head coach Steve Desimone said.
After leading for much of the event’s first 36 holes on Monday, Cal fell behind Arizona late in the second round and began Tuesday’s action two shots behind the Wildcats. The four-under par 280 the Golden Bears fired on Tuesday was a shot better than the 281 Arizona posted and the second-best round of the day but fell just short.
"I don’t know if anyone had more than a two or three shot lead at any time on the back nine," Desimone said. "I believe we were pretty much chasing them all day. We didn’t make many putts and gave away too many shots. Eventually that catches up to you. We just didn’t get it done, simple as that."

Women's Water Polo hosts Hawaii and heads to the furd
Link
BERKELEY -
Thur. Feb. 2 Hawaii, Spieker Aquatics Complex, Berkeley 4:30 p.m. Sat.-Sun. Feb. 4-5 at Stanford Invitational, Avery Stadium (Baker Pool), Stanford All Day
Bear Bites
In the toughest competition of the season, the No. 2-ranked Cal women’s water polo team (8-0) hosts No. 10 Hawaii (0-0) Thursday (Feb. 2, 4:30 p.m.) in its opening MPSF match before entering the eight-team Stanford Invitational, Feb. 4-5 at Avery Stadium. The Golden Bears will be competing in four matches in two days for the third weekend in a row and has a chance of facing No. 1-ranked Stanford Sunday. Cal plays No. 13 Michigan (10:50 a.m.) and No. 4 UCLA (6:30 p.m.) Saturday before again battling Hawaii Sunday at 8 a.m. If the Bears win their first three matches of the tournament they would likely face the top-ranked Cardinal in the championship match 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Last weekend at the Cal Speedo Invitational, Cal outscored its opponents, 64-19, with 17 different players scoring. Junior left-hander Breda Vosters leads the Bears in scoring with 10 goals in six matches, while senior Elizabeth McLaren and freshman Chris Baker have nine goals in eight matches. Freshman Tiera Schroeder was named the Jan. 23 KAP 7 MPSF Newcomer of the Week after three goals in her first collegiate matches at the Spartan Invitational.
About Hawaii and the Stanford Invitational
Hawaii opens its season at Cal, features first-year coach Maureen Cole Flanigan and top returning scorer junior Amarens Genee (32 goals), from a 18-9 (4-3 MPSF) squad in 2011. The Bears have a 25-8 all-time record against the Rainbow Wahines, going 1-1 last season with a 6-5 loss at the UCI Invitational and a 7-6 win in an MPSF match in Honolulu. The Stanford Invitational features eight teams, including the top five teams in the Collegiate Top 20 Poll. The invitational consists of No. 1 Stanford, No. 2 Cal, No. 3 USC, No. 4 UCLA, No. 5 San Jose State, No. 10 Hawaii, No. 13 Michigan and No. 15 UC Davis. The tournament schedule and results can be viewed by clicking on the following link (2012 Stanford Invitational). Last season the Bears had a 2-2 record (fifth) at the Stanford Invitational, topping San Jose State (14-10) and Arizona State (12-8), but falling to Stanford (10-5) and UCLA (10-8) in the third place match.
Soul Train founder Don Cornelius died
Dead of gunshot wound
Don Cornelius, the founder of the “Soul Train” television show, was found dead of a gunshot wound Wednesday, authorities said. He was 75.
Cornelius died of a gunshot wound at a house on Mulholland Drive, said Los Angeles police Officer Tenesha Dodine. Police responded to the call about 4 a.m. (7 a.m. ET), Dodine said.
An investigation was ongoing into whether the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, police said.
Now this is my kind of science
Study finds women’s voices are unreliable signs of fertility.
Though some research suggests that women unconsciously advertise their fertility, a new study shows that their voices are misleading to would-be mates.
Just before ovulation, when women are at their most fertile, their voices become higher-pitched — but the same happens after ovulation, when they’re less fertile.
"Other species have very obvious indicators of fertility, like the sexual swellings of Barbary macaques," said Julia Fischer, a vocalization researcher at the German Primate Center in Göttingen, Germany. "We’d like to know if there is some comparable signal in humans."
Evolutionary biologists long assumed that women hide ovulation to encourage faithfulness in their partners. If they can encourage males to mate with them regularly, rather than allowing men to cherry-pick the best times, the pair’s bond will be stronger. Women and their offspring can continually benefit from food and protection the male may provide.
During the past decade, however, hidden female fertility has been increasingly questioned. Several studies have found that men seem to subconsciously detect it. Lap dancers earn higher tips just before ovulation, and women in relationships report their mates are more jealous and attentive to their whereabouts.
The hips, however, don’t lie.

That’s one big baby
An Iowa woman has given birth to a boy weighing 13 pounds and 13 ounces — without the aid of surgery.
Asher Stewardson was born Thursday at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, measuring 23 ½ inches long. Fifteen months ago, his brother, Judah, arrived weighing 12 pounds and an ounce at birth.
Mercy officials say only a tenth of 1 percent of all newborns weigh more than 11 pounds at birth.
The boys’ mother, Kendall Stewardson, endured six hours of labor without an epidural injection. She says she and her husband, Joshua, wanted to avoid cesarean delivery because that wouldn’t have been good for her or Asher.
Jamarcus Russell was 15 lbs, I think. Set some kind of record in Louisiana…

It’s not often we see a beauty queen make the transition from glorified eye candy to pop sensation and screen-legend-in-the-making, but Priyanka Chopra is doing just that. Using a student’s information without authorization by the student in this way is a violation of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. An administrator would be fired immediately for doing what Tosh did. It will be interesting to see what happens to a football coach who used the transcripts of students at a former school to recruit players to his new employer.

For men, if your jacket has two buttons you only want to button one? That seems silly.

You seem silly.
Yes, you only want to button the top one. It looks bad otherwise.
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
If you get functional buttons on your jacket sleeve (some bespoke suits have these; also, Tyrwhitt’s suits have them), then keep the last unbuttoned to show the fact that they’re functional!
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
Okay, the real reason is because suits are draped as such. If a suit is built to not button the bottom button, then that’s how it will look best, correct?

That sounds reasonable.

Any kind of suit at all would be odd to wear to my office. People would wonder where I was interviewing.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
That I’m the one guy at a tech startup that inexplicably wears a suit everyday?
Besides, a suit would get in the way while I’m playing ping-pong.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
I’ve played ping pong and guitar hero and all your zany startup games in my suit.
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
My point was that if you feel comfortable playing ping-pong in a suit, you clearly have a much better-fitting suit than I do. I did not realize they made them that comfortable.
Still think the tie would be distracting.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
That’s when you unbotton the top button and slightly loosen the tie to show how laid back you are.
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
If you are planning on interviewing somewhere in the future, and you’re in a “dress down” company, I suggest you make a habit of occasionally dressing up for no reason at all. Everybody will be all like “oh interview huh” and you’ll be a lot more casual about “nah, just got an event/ran out of casual clothes/felt like dressing up today”
Then when you really do have an interview, everybody will be all like “oh he just likes to dress up every once in a while”

Why would I own more than one suit? How many weddings do I really have to go to, anyway?
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
What about date night with AndBears? What about the opera? What about “I want to look nice” occasions? Dinner parties?
2011 World Cup Champions Team India
AndBears will have to weigh in on this one, but I usually stick to nice shirt + tie for most of those occasions. I honestly don’t wear a suit more than a couple times a year, max.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Wear what you feel most comfortable in. If that’s a nice shirt and tie, then more power to you.

This isn’t bad advice, and sometimes I do like wearing a shirt with buttons and a collar to work (still paired with jeans, of course).
Honestly, though, at most of the companies I might interview at, I think I could wear a t-shirt to the interview, and not only would no one care, they might even think better of me for not trying to mask a lack of qualifications by looking fancy.

ah, the joys of a 5 – 10 block walk when it’s 95 / 95 out!
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.
Yeah, that story gave me sympathy sweats. I worked in a building one summer where they just turned the a/c off on Friday night and back on Monday morning – we would look for any excuse we could to come in late on Mondays because damn.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.
I will just never forget feeling the sweat going through my shirt and i COULD NOT take my suit jacket off otherwise it would be exposed.. and looking around the room and seeing everyone sweating… disgusting.
Now imagine that people had that every day in the pre-A/C era. Doesn’t really bear thinking about. My wife’s grandparents (the Jewish ones, not the tight-fisted Yankee ones) got a/c installed just about as soon as it was available for houses, and never looked back. When I first met them, the house was hovering around 60 on a 90-ish day.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.
I didn’t know what a “summer suit” was until I moved back east. And when summer came I realized I didn’t have any.

America’s Cup Construction Begins amid Growing Doubts
The sailing event — and its financial benefits — may be smaller than expected
But doubts are growing about the number of spectators who will actually come to the city this year and next to watch the races of experimental catamarans. Preliminary races held on 45-foot vessels in San Diego and elsewhere are failing to attract expected crowds or sponsors.[…]
Meanwhile, just three sailing teams have paid the $100,000 registration fee required to vie for the right to challenge Larry Ellison’s Oracle Racing team during the main races of 72-foot boats on the bay next year — far shy of the nine challengers that organizers expected to take part. The entry fee was reduced in late 2010 from $1.3 million per team in a bid to entice competitors.

TheBuckeyeBear...is this true?
You’re Just Going To Have To Hold It
Do animals that hibernate get up to go to the bathroom?
Hibernating bears, on the other hand, can go the whole winter without going to the bathroom. While bears are not the most serious of hibernators—they don’t sleep as deeply or lower their body temperature as many degrees as most other hibernating mammals—few animals can hold it in like bears. Many bears pass more than half of every year in hibernation, neither eating nor drinking any water. Hibernating mothers can even suckle their young without leaving their den for a drink. They obtain their water by metabolizing fat reserves, which does produce waste. However, instead of urinating and defecating, hibernating bears recycle that waste. Urea waste, which can be poisonous at high levels, is broken down to build proteins and used to maintain muscle and organ tissues during the long sleep. (While a bear may lose weight during the winter, it may also become more muscular.) The specific processes by which bears convert urea into muscle are still somewhat mysterious to researchers.
Hibernating bears develop a "fecal plug" or "tappen" in their rectum. Outdoorsmen of the 19th and early 20th century expressed curiosity about the tappen, suspecting that it might be essential to the bear’s success in retaining its sustenance during hibernation (an 1865 nature book noted that, "the tappen is very seldom cast until the animal leaves its den. In the rare instances where such an event has happened, the Bear is said to have become miserably thin and weak"). But contemporary experts differ on whether the tappen is important for plugging the rectum or whether it’s simply an unfortunate side-effect of hibernation. Northern bears, which may hibernate for as long as seven months, form extra-large fecal plugs, but all bears eventually expel the tappen outside their den in the spring. (Scientists seem not to have determined whether this process might be uncomfortable for the bear.) The North American Bear Center notes that tappens have "a light odor that is not unpleasant."

Who will Barack Obama pick to win the game?
New England Patriots – 5/6
New York Giants – 5/6
He was asked a few days ago and said he “couldn’t call it.” I’m assuming he meant “yet” and he’ll make a pick closer to game time. And I predict it will be New England. He’s got New York locked down without pandering; he needs to side with Massachusetts to stay competitive with Romney. It’s why I also see him picking the Red Sox to win the World Series and BYU to win in March Madness.
I bet $11 on Obama picking New England, to win $9.17. Gotta love those horrific payouts on prop bets, right?

Madonna Super Bowl Halftime Show To Feature Nicki Minaj And M.I.A.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jessica-pearce-rotondi/madonna-super-bowl_b_1244984.html
The past year has clearly been a win for women in entertainment. It’s only fitting, then, that the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show belongs to none other than Madonna — along with Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., according to Contact Music.
Madonna admitted to Anderson Cooper in an episode of his talk show that will air on Thursday, February 2, that the pressure’s fierce: “I have eight minutes to set up my stage, 12 minutes to put on the greatest show on Earth, and I have seven minutes to take it down.” While we have no doubts she will bring down the house, one big question looms: Will there be voguing?
gonna be hella annoying.

Well, look
I can’t stand the music of the Black Eyed Peas, and I think they are an absolutely worthless band. But the halftime show was kind of entertaining despite the shitty songs. So it worked for that.

‘At least 73’ die in Egypt football clashes
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story/_/id/1016345/‘at-least-73’-die-in-egypt-football-clashes?cc=5901
Ugly clashes at a football match in Port Said have left at least 73 people dead and more than 1,000 injured, according to Egyptian state television.
AP
Al Ahly players ran for safety as Al-Masry supporters invaded the pitch in Port Said
Al-Masry claimed a rare 3-1 victory at home to Al-Ahly but shocking scenes followed the final whistle, with hundreds of the winning team’s fans pouring onto the field wielding sticks and stones.
A security official claimed the supporters attacked players and opposition fans, cornering the travelling Al-Ahly faithful on the field and around the stadium and throwing stones and bottles at them.
A medic at a morgue in Port Said said some of the dead were security officers, though the causes of the deaths were not immediately known.
The two teams have a long history of bad blood, and clashes have erupted in recent years between their fans.
The players were later taken to the dressing room for protection, Al-Ahly striker Sayed Hamdi told state TV.
Soon after the violence, a match in the Cairo Stadium between the Al-Ismailiya and Zamalek was called off in mourning for the violence, but state TV showed sections of the Cairo stadium on fire.

with video of the pitch invasion.
Unlikely – there’s a rich history, so to speak, of violence in Egyptian soccer. They have to get the army in the stadium to separate the Al-Ahly and Zamalek fans in the Cairo derby.
I got tired of waiting because I found out there's only a fine line between biding one's time and wasting one's time.

Facebook files for IPO
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2012/01/facebook-files-for-ipo.html
Status update: Facebook has filed papers for what’s expected to be the largest initial public offering ever to come out of Silicon Valley and one of the largest in U.S. history.
Ending months of breathless speculation, the 8-year-old social networking company has submitted registration documents with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that set preliminary goal of $5 billion.
Facebook had discussed raising as much as $10 billion. Final pricing will not be set for months, and the size of the IPO probably will increase with investor demand.
The filing sets the stage for an IPO in May.
The important stats right off the bat: 845 million users; 483 million daily users; annual revenue of $3.7 billion; $1.8 billion in operating income and $1 billion net income.
Facebook selected Morgan Stanley as its lead bank to handle the IPO with assistance from four others. Morgan Stanley’s resume of recent Internet IPOs includes Groupon and Zynga. Investment banks will receive as much as $500 million in fees depending on the valuation.

- montezuma, sedona, GC, home
- montezuma, sedona, JT, home
- montezuma, sedona, mojave, home
- ??
thanks!

DRINK BECAUSE I HAVE INCLUDED A PHOTO OF A PLACE I HAVE GONE SO YOU CAN CLICK ON THIS TO COLLAPSE TH E POST
What are you asking exactly.
Yes to all of them. Are you spending four days driving?
I must insist that when you head back up to the Bay Area you take interior routs (99 or 65 / 63) and make sure to hit Sequoia and Kings Canyon (but at least Sequoia) which is simply spectacular… The General Sherman (and the rest) is really a site to behold and it amazes me how few Californians have seen it.

I’m basically asking, with our limited time, which ones should we try to see?
we’re driving Saturday-Monday; I’m gonna take Friday and Monday off from work. i’m hoping to see the first spring training A’s game on Friday in PHX. the driving will start sat morning.
by the federer express on Feb 1, 2012 3:44 PM PST up reply actions
for instance, obviously we can’t see both Mojave and JOshua Tree with our limited time. which one is better?
by the federer express on Feb 1, 2012 3:46 PM PST up reply actions
More photos so you can click on this to hide them!
Coming from Phoenix I would do Joshua Tree… You can actually just drive through… you get off the 10 and enter the park at Cottonwood Spring…
If you are feeling ambitious… leave REALLY early saturday morning so before you go there go South to the Imperial Sand Dunes… totally awesome… and you’ll go through Browley, home of Cal legend Mike Mohamed. The Sand Dunes are amazing and stunning…

ANd there is crazy roads…

I would exit Joshua Tree at 29 Palms…
From there I would take 60 or 62 (I forget) over to 395 and then take that to 58 (west) where you will go through Tehachapi and down into Bakersfield… You’ll be on 99 for just as few minutes then get off 99 and take 65 north and you will go through some great little towns, namely Exeter… but the payoff is you will be able to go right into Sequoia National Park…
hwo about this itinerary?
1. phx
2. montezuma castle
3. sedona
4. mojave
5. sequoia
6. home
by the federer express on Feb 1, 2012 4:04 PM PST up reply actions
I mean this is totally up to you…I think Joshua Tree is better than the Mojave and more manageable and, I think, you get more bang for your buck. If you are going to be in Phoenix, I would also highly recommend NOT taking 10 the whole way and instead taking 60… it’s a much nice driver and breaks the monotony quite well… but remember, I"m an it’s all about the journey guy…
should we skip the AZ attractions entirely and just get our butts back to CA? I hear good things about montezuma and sedona

What? I don’t mind calls to the regular #.
But, have some respect for a private # that isn’t supposed to be on a spam-call phone-list.
Try being on call 24-7. And whenever one of your phones rings after hours, it’s usually an emergency where you have to shift from home-mode back to work-mode. Ain’t fun getting solicitation calls on that phone, dude.

Susan G. Komen pulling funding from Planned Parenthood
My Fbook and other internet community are blowing up about this. What say CGB?
The nation’s leading breast-cancer charity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, is halting its partnerships with Planned Parenthood affiliates — creating a bitter rift, linked to the abortion debate, between two iconic organizations that have assisted millions of women.
The change will mean a cutoff of hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants, mainly for breast exams.
"Sometimes you get it, and sometimes you get got."
Deeply disappointed in Komen organization
An organization founded to raise money to find a cure for breast cancer should have the courage to stand up to bullies, l8ike Michelle Bachman and Cliff Stearns.
I can understand that they don’t want to associate with organizations who probably took improper or illegal actions. But the policy as stated in the article means that anyone with an agenda can influence or “force” Komen’s board to take action that isolates women on another critical health care issue.
Anti-choicers will not stop until they can tell everyone how they ought to live, think and speak. You can either stand up to fascism or you can acquiesce.
"We do not seek men who will bravely lie down to die, but men who will fight valiantly to live."
"Winning is not everything. It is far better to play the game squarely and lose than to win at the sacrifice of an ideal."
-- Andrew Latham Smith
MOAR
From a story on NPR, maybe coming from Komen’s new vice prez
But others say the pressure may have come from within the Komen organization itself. They point to the hiring last year of Karen Handel, a vice president who ran for governor in Georgia last year on a platform that included cutting state funds for Planned Parenthood.
Very disappointing
Cal: Bears with Books.
It’ll probably mean a financial hit for Komen as well. I wouldn’t want to donate to them now.

I heard a radio spot on KNBR promoting the game, and though they mentioned that the U of Ahole game is “Gold Out”, they didn’t say anything about what it was. I understand they only have 30 seconds or whatever but maybe next year the radio spots could explain a bit more. Unless maybe the marketing plan assumes the radio commercial listeners aren’t that into it.
Maybe file it for next year, but I thought I’d share after hearing the spot.
